FLSmidth's cement business reports sales of US$871m in 2023
30 January 2024Denmark: FLSmidth's cement business recorded preliminary, unaudited sales of US$871m in 2023, down by 59% year-on-year from US$2.14bn in 2022. The business contributed 25% of the group’s consolidated sales of US$3.5bn. FLSmidth had a total order intake for the year of US$3.11bn, toward which the cement business contributed US$711m (23%). The supplier said that its results were in line with guidance. It now expects its cement business to generate US$580 – 653m (19 – 23%) of total group sales of US$2.9 – 3.12bn in 2024.
FLSmidth said “We expect the short-term outlook for the cement industry to remain impacted by macroeconomic uncertainty. The guidance for 2024 reflects the ongoing execution of the GREEN’26 strategy, continued business simplification and product portfolio pruning, including the expected closing of sale of the MAAG gears and drives business during the first quarter of 2024.”
FLSmidth Cement sells MAAG gears and drives business to Solix
24 January 2024Denmark/Sweden: FLSmidth Cement has sold its MAAG gears and drives business to the Sweden-based investment company Solix Group for an undisclosed sum. The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of 2024 and includes all related assets, including intellectual property, technology, employees and customer contracts. FLSmidth said that the divestment was is in line with its Green'26 strategy, which in combination with a greater strategic focus on the service business includes focusing the product portfolio on the core technologies required for a potential green transition in the cement industry.
The MAAG product range includes a wide range of industrial gear solutions for all types of mills and kilns, gear solutions for bucket-wheel excavators and belt conveyors, as well as many other heavy-duty applications used in the cement, mining and other industries. The business has an average turnover of around Euro55 – 65m/yr.
Christopher Ashworth, the president of FLSmidth Cement, said “The divestment is fully aligned with our ongoing transformation efforts and supports our Green'26 strategy. US: Germany-based drives supplier Flender has received the Supplier Excellence Recognition Award 2023 from engineering firm Caterpillar. The award recognises suppliers that demonstrate a commitment to excellence and drive a zero-defect culture. Caterpillar said that Flender exceeded 95% delivery reliability, with zero defects, during 2023. Contracts included gearboxes, remanufactured gearboxes, spare parts and couplings for Caterpillar’s 7495 Rope Shovel. The 7495 Rope Shovel is used in quarrying, including in the cement industry.
Caterpillar’s senior vice president strategic procurement and planning Pam Heminger said “Caterpillar’s reputation for world-class products and services stands on the shoulders of our global and diverse team – and that team includes our international and diverse supply network. By working together, we can deliver on our purpose to help our customers build a better, more sustainable world.”
Flender enlarges Voerde production plant
17 May 2023Germany: Flender has officially completed construction work on an expansion at its site in Voerde with the opening of its new logistics and storage hall for the assembly of large gear units. The hall has been built on an open area on the company's premises covering almost 8000m2. The new building is part of the drive manufacturer’s investments to be able to handle the expected growth in the global wind energy business and to drive the energy transition in Europe. In addition to large components for wind power gearboxes, the logistics hall will also serve its industrial business. The company has also leased another 10,000m2 hall, directly next door to its Voerde unit, to further support its logistics.
Flender’s chief executive officer Andreas Evertz said "With the new storage areas, we are making our logistics processes sustainable and thus reducing a considerable part of the previous transport routes and the associated CO2 emissions. Components that were previously stored elsewhere can now be stored centrally and made available for assembly more quickly with optimised transport routes.”
Flender’s Voerde plant is the company’s largest in Germany with an area of 276,000m2. It employs 1500 people.
Triton acquires Renk
05 February 2020Germany: UK-based Triton Investment Management Limited subsidiary Scur-Alpha has entered into a share purchase agreement with Volkswagen for the German gear manufacturer Renk. Renk will continue to serve the cement industry with its special gear units and horizontal slide bearings under the new ownership.
Wikov hosts heavy-duty gearbox conference in Egypt
21 November 2019Egypt: Wikov hosted its Wikov Gear Technology Conference in Cairo in late October 2019 to promote its products to cement producers in the Middle East. The focus was on the historical presence of Wikov in the market under the former brand Škoda, and later the product highlights and innovations like Side Drive gearboxes with Separate Lubrication System and shock-load-resistant planetary gearboxes Orbi-fleX with flexible pin. The conference also included a demonstration of Wikov’s new online gearbox configurator. This platform enables users to configure and select a planetary gearbox, generate technical data, a 3D model and send a request for quotation. Around 70 industry delegates attended the event.
Germany/Czech Republic: Gear unit specialists Flender and Wikov Industry have announced a service cooperation deal for gear units from other manufacturers. Both companies will add gears from other producers to their service portfolio with the aim of becoming a global ‘one-stop-shop’ in the industry. The intention is to reduce the complexity that end-users can encounter when components from multiple manufacturers are deployed in a single application.
The agreement will allow customers to benefit from Flender's service network with more than 50 repair centres around the world. Wikov holds experience regarding spare parts for gear units from other manufacturers.
Both companies will continue to offer their service portfolio for their original products.
Siemens Mechanical Drives Unit to rebrand as Flender
30 June 2017Germany: The Siemens Mechanical Drives unit will rebrand for the market as Flender, a wholly owned subsidiary based in Bocholt, on 1 October 2017. The reorganisation is intended to give the unit a ‘sharper’ business focus. Its branches around the worldwide will also be rebranded. The new setup is expected to be completed by mid-2018.
“Flender is our strong brand with a tradition more than a century old, and we’ve always done business under the name. At this year’s Hannover Messe, we highlighted Flender even more brightly, and made quite a splash with our stand-alone fair booth for gear units and clutches. Eventually all the unit’s activities worldwide will be gathered under Flender,” says Stefan Tenbrock, chief executive officer (CEO) of Siemens Mechanical Drives.
The future Flender builds components for mechanical drive technology, producing at eight locations with more than 6000 employees around the world. Its product range embraces a broad portfolio of gear units and clutches, drive applications and associated services. It serves industries including cement production, wind power, marine shipping, and conveyor and lifting technology.
A Friedrich Flender AG was founded in Düsseldorf in 1899, originally making wood pulleys. Subsequently the company developed into manufacturing gear products. Siemens took over Flender in 2005 and integrated the company into its corporate group as a unit for mechanical drives. In February 2017 the company announced that it would reorganise Mechanical Drives as a stand-alone entity within Siemens.
UK: Mechanical power transmission companies David Brown and Santasalo merged on 1 June 2016 to create David Brown Santasalo. Clyde Blowers Capital, an industrial investment firm based in Scotland, owns the business.
The merged company intends to serve markets in commodities, marine, defence, power, industrial and consumer end sectors. Its core business lies in gear engineering and power transmission products. The new company contains more than 1000 employees, seven major manufacturing plants and 23 service centres across six continents.
“David Brown Santasalo covers varied end markets including naval ships, minerals processing and the manufacture of a wide range of pulp and paper products. Across all these markets, our core differentiator is our fundamental capability to design and engineer gear systems for the world’s most demanding applications,” said Thomas Burley, Chief Executive Officer of David Brown Santasalo. He added that the company intends to focus on expanding its sales and service network, enhance its product offering and invest in its manufacturing base around the world.
