Prestige Cement inaugurates grinding plant in Abidjan

29 March 2019

Ivory Coast: Prestige Cement has inaugurated a 1.2Mt/yr plant at Abidjan. The Chinese-Ivorian joint venture had an investment of around US$35m, according to the Agence de Presse Africaine. The unit has two 0.6Mt/yr production lines using vertical roller mills. Souleymane Diarrassouba, Minister of Commerce, Industry and SME Promotion, attended the event on behalf of the government. Chinese ambassador Tang Weibin was also in attendence.

Nigerien president inaugurates Malbaza Cement plant

Niger: President Issoufou Mahamadou has inaugurated Malbaza Cement Company’s plant at Malbaza. The US$83m plant has a production capacity of 0.65Mt/yr, according to the Le Sahel newspaper. It produced its first cement in late December 2018. It has 347 employees.

President inaugurates Mond-Dashti Cement plant in Iran

Iran: President Hassan Rouhani has inaugurated the Mond-Dashti Cement plant. He made the inauguration remotely by video link, according to the Tehran Times newspaper. The unit had an investment of around US$90m and a cement production capacity of 1.2Mt/yr. It has created over 170 jobs.

Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies inaugurates pilot plant at Bournezeau

France: Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies has inaugurated its pilot plant at Bournezeau, Vendée. The 50,000t/yr unit will manufacture cement products using metakaolin and blast-furnace slag, according to the L'Usine Nouvelle magazine. It says it will produce cement with reduced CO2 emissions up to 250kg/t using a flash-calcined process down from 900kg/t in the normal clinker production process. The project had investment of Euro10m.

Congolese government to inaugurate Diamond cement plant

Republic of Congo: The Congolese Ministry of Industry says that it is ready to inaugurate the Diamond cement plant. The new plant is located in the district of Mindouli, about 200km south of Brazzaville, according to Agence de Presse Africaine. The 0.1Mt/yr unit started production in early 2018 at a cost of around US$100m. The project had previously been delayed by four years due to local security issues. The plant will be the fifth cement plant in the country and will bring local cement production capacity to over 3.0Mt/yr.

President inaugurates Simba Cement’s plant

Uganda: President Yoweri Museveni has commissioned the Simba Cement plant in Mukuju Sub-County in Tororo District in Eastern Uganda.

The factory, which currently employs about 400 workers, was built in two and half years by Mepani Technical Services, at an estimated cost of US$55m. It is the second cement plant in Tororo District.

President Museveni, who on arrival at the factory made an inspection tour of the facility, urged Ugandans to be enterprising and disciplined. He added that, with the abundant natural resources with which Uganda is endowed, there is tremendous potential for development.

Musaveni commended the pledge by the factory to employ local youths and advised the company to employ at least 30% youth workers. He also praised Tororo District for the peaceful approach in handling their district’s matters.

The Managing Director of Simba Cement factory, Guru Narendra Raval, said that the reduction in the price of cement due to the new capacity the plant had brought was in line with President Museveni's dream of having Ugandans living in cemented houses. He said, “The President asked me to build a cement factory and now I have built it. I am not here to make profits but to make Ugandan lives better.”

Mega cement and marble plant inaugurated in Egypt

Egypt: Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi inaugurated a cement and marble production complex worth US$1.1bn to the south of Cairo on 15 August 2018. The 500-hectare industrial complex is located 12km north of the Upper Egyptian governorate of Beni Suef.

It took 21 months to complete the complex, which includes three cement plants with a combined annual production capacity of 12Mt/yr. Egypt, through the Armed Forces Engineering Authority, worked together with 20 local and international companies on the project.
During the unveiling ceremony, Sisi said that such industrial projects would help reduce imports, while saving foreign currency and offering thousands of job opportunities to local people.

INC inaugurates second mill at Villeta cement plant

06 August 2018

Paraguay: Industria Nacional del Cemento’s (INC) has officially inaugurated a second cement mill at its Villeta plant. The state-owned cement producer spent US$12m on the upgrade, according to the Agencia de Información Paraguaya. The new mill was built by China’s Sinoma. It has a cement production capacity of 80t/hr or be able to produce around 800,000 bags/month of cement. INC also plans to start operating a pozzolan drying unit at Villeta in September 2018.

Cement Manufacturers Association of Ghana holds inauguration

Ghana: The Cement Manufacturers Association of Ghana (CMAG) formally inaugurated itself at the start of July 2018. The association is intended to protect and accelerate the development of the industry, according to MyJoyOnline. Members of the association include Ghacem, Diamond Cement and Ciments de l’Afrique (CIMAF). In its constitution the association stated that it, “is not a cartel, but an umbrella body for cement manufacturers in the country.”

Raju Baddharaju, Diamond Cement, has been appointed as the first chairman of the association’s board. George Dawson-Ahmoah, Strategy & Corporate Affairs Director of Ghacem has been appointed as the executive secretary with effect from August 2018. Other members on the governing board include: Morten Gade-Member, Ghacem; Eugene Laryea-Member, Ghacem; N. Venkatesh-Member, Diamond Cement; Mohamed Bennis-Member, CIMAF; and Joseph Aboo-Member, CIMAF.

Previously, the Ghana Cement Manufacturers Association (GCMA) published its memorandum of understanding in 2015 with Ghacem and Diamond Cement as its founding members. Dawson-Ahmoah was the chairman of an interim executive body for the association.

Wamgroup inaugurates technology centre

Italy: Wamgroup has inaugurated its new technology centre in Cavezzo. The centre will be used for research, training and as a showroom, according to local media. The enginering company specialises in screw conveyors as well we manufacturing equipment for bulk solids handling and processing, dust filtration, waste water treatment and renewable energy generation. It celebrates its 50th year of business in 2018 following its founding in late 1968.
