Sharjah Cement’s sales slip in profitable full-year 2023

UAE: Sharjah Cement’s sales were US$172m in 2023, down by 0.2% from US$173m in 2022. Mubasher has reported that the company successfully turned a profit of US$308m, compared to a US$10.8m loss in 2022.

Sumitomo Osaka Cement forecasts sales growth and return to profit in 2024 financial year

09 February 2024

Japan: Sumitomo Osaka Cement expects to record a 9.5% year-on-year rise in its sales in the 2024 financial year (1 April 2023 – 31 March 2024), to US$1.5bn. Nikkei Financial News has reported that this represents a downward revision of 1.3% from the producer’s previous estimate of US$1.52bn. On the other hand, Sumitomo Osaka Cement revised its profit forecast upwards by 12%, to US$79m. Previously in the 2023 financial year, it reported a loss of US$38.3m.

Taiheiyo Cement records sales growth in first nine months of 2024 financial year

Japan: Taiheiyo Cement's nine-month results for the 2024 financial year showed a 9.9% year-on-year rise in sales, to US$4.44bn from US$4.04bn. Dow Jones Institutional News has reported that the producer’s net profit rebounded to US$194m, against a US$119m loss in the first nine months of the 2023 financial year.

China National Building Material’s profit dropped in 2023

China: China National Building Material (CNBM) expects to record a 65% year-on-year drop in its profit in 2023. This would correspond to a figure of US$393m, against a reported profit after tax of US$1.12bn in 2022. Reuters has reported that CNBM partly attributed the anticipated drop to low cement prices and changes in the fair value of its assets.

Cement market to grow in India but not in China in 2024

China/India: Research organisation Fitch Ratings has forecast continued ‘steady’ growth of 6 – 8% year-on-year in cement demand in India in 2024. Meanwhile, it expects demand in China to remain ‘weak,’ amid low activity levels in the residential construction sector. Nonetheless, Fitch Ratings said that rising installed cement capacity will limit growth in producers’ profit margins in India, while producers’ profit margins will stabilise in China.

Hume Cement Industries’ first-quarter sales rise in 2024 financial year

17 November 2023

Malaysia: Hume Cement Industries recorded US$65.5m in sales during the first quarter of the 2024 financial year (beginning 1 July 2023). This represents 48% year-on-year growth from US$44.2m one year previously. The producer’s profit was US$10.3m, against a US$2.57m loss in the first quarter of the 2023 financial year.

Bernama Daily Malaysian News has reported that Hume Cement Industries expects domestic cement demand to rise throughout the 2024 financial year. Nonetheless, the company said “The board remains cautious, as the uncertainties arising from geopolitical pressures continue to challenge the cement industry's input costs. The group is increasing its focus on developing sustainable construction materials in this growing economy, while continuing its efforts to enhance operational excellence.”

National Cement Company grows sales so far in 2023

UAE: The first nine months of 2023 brought sales growth of 39% year-on-year for National Cement Company, to US$36.8m from US$26.7m. Meanwhile, the company reversed nine-month 2022 losses of US$5.45m to record a net profit of US$13.7m during the first nine months of 2023.

Titan Cement’s nine-month sales rise so far in 2023

10 November 2023

Greece: Titan Cement reported increased sales during the first nine months of 2023. They grew by 14% year-on-year to Euro1.89bn. Sales rose by 24% in Greece and Western Europe, by 16% in the US and by 13% in Southeast Europe. However, they fell by 5.9% in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Meanwhile, the company’s earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose by 72% to Euro397m. Group net profit more than doubled to Euro198m. Titan Cement maintained a level of capital expenditure in line with that in the first nine months of 2022, at Euro158m.

Titan Cement maintained its positive growth outlook for the full year in 2023, but expects to experience the effects of an anticipated ‘temporary cooling’ in global economic activity in 2024. The producer said that Euro8bn-worth of investments in on-going infrastructure projects in Greece will likely help to offset these effects locally.

Qatar National Cement reports declining profit in the first nine months of 2023

Qatar: Qatar National Cement recorded a net profit of US$41.6m during the first nine months of 2023. Reuters has reported that this corresponds to a drop of 11% year-on-year from US$46.9m in the same period of 2022.

China National Building Material issues nine-month profit warning

17 October 2023

China: China National Building Material (CNBM) has warned of an anticipated year-on-year decline in its profit during the first nine months of 2023. Reuters has reported that the group forecast a drop of 70% from nine-month 2022 levels. Declining cement prices contributed to the anticipated drop.
