Denmark: FLSmidth has entered into a share purchase agreement with Nrep and AG Gruppen to sell its subsidiary Matr. No 2055 A/S, which owns the land and buildings at Vigerslev Allé 77 in Valby, Copenhagen. The company has been based at the Valby site since 1899, with the current buildings built in 1956. In 2022, FLSmidth announced plans to relocate its headquarters to a news site in Havneholmen, Copenhagen in late 2025.

FLSmidth expects net cash proceeds of approximately US$112m upon the closing of the transaction, scheduled for the end of the first quarter of 2026, subject to approval by the Danish Consumer and Competition Authority.

Saudi Arabia: Sinoma Overseas has marked the construction of the preheater tower as part of a relocation and upgrade of Yamama Cement’s production line. The previously 10,000t/day line now has a capacity of 12,500t/day. The placement of the final structural element on the preheater tower was attended by representatives from both companies.

Sinoma posted on social media that the company had “overcom[e] significant engineering and logistical challenges – from dismantling and moving massive equipment to integrating new technology.”

With the preheater tower now complete, the company looks ahead to the plant’s commissioning and final delivery.

US: Cemex USA has sold its headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida for US$13.4m. The South Florida Business Journal newspaper has reported that the company will vacate the property in early 2022. It will relocate to a nearby smaller office. Cemex USA has occupied its current headquarters since 1983. According to sources quoted by the newspaper, it no longer requires the 20,000m² space due to increased rates of remote working by staff.

France: Ciments Calcia says that it will move into its new headquarters in La Défense, Hauts-de-Seine department, in early 2022. The Les Echos newspaper has reported that the Covid-19 pandemic previously delayed the move, which the company announced in late 2019. It will leave ‘part of its services’ at its existing Guerville, Yvelines department. Some staff will work at the new headquarters ‘two or three days a week’ due to the benefits of remote working.

China: Jiangxi Wannianqing Cement’s net profit in 2019 was US$197m, representing a 20% year-on-year increase from US$164m. Reuters has reported that on 15 November 2019 Jiangxi Wannianqing Cement paid US$82.6m for a lease and limestone exploration rights for land in De’an County, Jiangxi Province, previously held by Fushan Cement. On 25 June 2019 the company received US$23.3m in government compensation for the relocation of its Wannian cement plant.

Colombia: Switzerland-based construction materials producer Sika has invested an undisclosed sum in relocating production from a concrete admixture and mortar plant in Colombia to a larger facility in Barranquilla. Sika Americas regional manager Christopher Ganz said, “Our latest investment in Barranquilla will help us capture the potential of the dynamic construction market in the Caribbean region. Our aim is to grow more quickly than the construction market in this region.” The market grew by 15% in 2019.

Sika also manufactures building products for the Colombian market at facilities in Bogotá, Medellín and Duitama.

China: Three cement plants in Dali, Yunnan province with a combined capacity of 5.0Mt/yr and belonging to Dali Cement (Group), Dali Hongshan Yunnan Cement and Hongta Dianxi Cement have ceased all functions except the packaging of existing cement in order to stop polluting the area of Erhai Lake. The shutdown was mandated by the City of Dali and Dali Economic Development Zone authorities in mid-2017. Xinhua Net newspaper has reported that the removal of kilns is underway and that demolition on all three sites will have been completed by 31 May 2020. The companies will be permitted to construct plants of corresponding capacities at allotted sites elsewhere.
