India: UltraTech Cement has created a joint venture with Amplus Energy to expand its solar power generation capacity. The cement producer has acquired a 26% stake in the Amplus Sunshine, according to VCCircle Network. Amplus Sunshine will set up a 15MW captive solar plant at one of UltraTech’s Cement’s plants for an investment of around US$10m. The cement producer has a capacity of 50MW from its solar power plants but it intends to increase this. Amplus Energy installs rooftop solar power plants for the industrial and commercial sector.
Binani Cement renamed UltraTech Nathdwara Cement
14 December 2018India: UltraTech Cement has renamed its Binani Cement subsidiary UltraTech Nathdwara Cement. The leading Indian cement producer finally acquired Binani Cement in late November 2018 when the Supreme Court supported the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal’s (NCLAT) approval of its bid for Binani Cement following a legal fight with a consortium led by Dalmia Bharat group.
Binani Cement’s production assets include a 4.85Mt/yr integrated plant at Nathdwara and a 1.4Mt/yr grinding plant at Neem ka Thana, both in Rajasthan. The company also operates plants in China and the UAE. UltraTech Cement’s acquisition will increase its production capacity in the north of the country to around 24Mt/yr, increase its access to limestone reserves and offer it synergies in logistics and procurement.
Cement Sustainability Initiative report shows Indian cement industry meeting 2030 carbon emission targets
03 December 2018India: A report by the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) shows that the local cement sector is on track to meet its 2030 targets from the low carbon technology roadmap (LCTR). Direct CO2 emission intensity fell by 5% in 2017 in the Indian cement sector compared to the 2010 baseline. CO2 emission intensity, including onsite or captive power plant (CPP) power generation, was reduced by 6.8% compared to the 2010 baseline. The alternative fuels thermal substitution rate (TSR) increased by 5 times from 2010 to 2017. The sector consumed more than 1.2Mt of alternative fuels in 2017.
“Sustainability is a journey, not a destination. In our globalised and interconnected world, no one can solve alone the challenges ahead of us and the only opportunity to succeed is through collaborative partnerships, where the common interests of all are considered as more important than the sum of individual interests. This is exactly the spirit that has animated the CSI’s low carbon journey since 1999. This flagship project - with its members - has developed, implemented and shared collective solutions for measuring, reporting and improving its greenhouse gas reduction performance, year after year,” said Philippe Fonta, managing director CSI.
The CSI and the International Energy Agency (IEA) worked with nine local CSI member companies - ACC, Ambuja Cements, CRH, Dalmia Cement (Bharat), HeidelbergCement, Orient Cement, Shree Cement, UltraTech and Votorantim Cimentos - to carry out the status review on the sector’s performance trends, continuous implementation measures and notable achievements based on the milestones set in the 2013 LCTR. The Status Review Report was developed in consultation with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), with support from International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Cement Manufacturers Association (CMA).
The findings of the report show that the direct CO2 emission intensity was reduced by 32kgCO2/t cement to 588kgCO2/t cement in 2017 mainly due to an increased use of alternative fuel and blended cement production, coupled with a reduction in clinker replacement factor. However, the study also shows that significant efforts will be needed to meet the 2050 objectives of 40% reduction. The CO2 emission intensity (including onsite or CPP power generation) has reduced by 49kgCO2/t cement to 670kgCO2/t cement in 2017 compared to the baseline year. The report has highlighted the adoption of waste heat recovery (WHR) systems by local cement plants.
The alternative fuels TSR increased to 3% in 2017 from 0.6% in 2010. More than 60 cement plants in India have reported continual usage of alternative fuels, with 24% of the total alternative fuels consumed as biomass. The share of blended cements used in the total quantity of cement manufactured increased to 73% in 2017 from 68% in 2010, largely due to the market’s growing acceptance of blended cement, emerging awareness of sustainability concepts, the availability of fly ash from thermal power plants and the use of advanced technology. The production of Pozzolana Portland Cement grew to 65% in 2017 from 61% in 2010. The share of Portland Slag Cement in cement production remained flat, at less than 10%, over the same period. The clinker factor reduced to 0.71 in 2017 from 0.74 in 2010.
In August 2018 the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) said it was taking over the work previously done by the CSI from 1 January 2019.
UltraTech Cement declares Binani Cement is its subsidiary
22 November 2018India: UltraTech Cement says that Binani Cement has become a wholly-owned subsidiary. The announcement to its shareholders follows a protracted legal battle with Dalmia Bharat group over the outcome of an auction for the insolvent producer. The acquisition includes production capacity in Rajasthan as well as subsidiaries in China and the UAE.
Supreme Court backs National Company Law Appellate Tribunal on UltraTech’s bid for Binani Cement
20 November 2018India: The Supreme Court has upheld a decision by the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) to approve a revised US$1.11bn bid for Binani Cement. The court rejected a challenge by Rajputana Properties, a subsidiary of rival bidder Dalmia Bharat group, according to the Hindu newspaper. UltraTech Cement made a direct bid for the bankrupt Binani Cement following an auction in March 2018 that was originally won by Dalmia Bharat. Dalmia Bharat disputed UltraTech Cement’s offer and the two companies have conducted legal campaigns to reinforce their respective claims.
National Company Law Appellate Tribunal approves UltraTech Cement’s bid for Binani Cement
14 November 2018India: The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has approved a revised bid by UltraTech Cement for Binani Cement. The tribunal approved UltraTech’s resolution plan and said that the plan submitted by Rajputana Properties, a subsidiary of rival bidder Dalmia Bharat group, was ‘discriminatory’ against some financial creditors, according to the Press Trust of India. In July 2018 the Supreme Court transferred all matters related to corporate insolvency resolution process of Binani Cement to the NCLAT Kolkata.
Third quarter update for the major cement producers
07 November 2018HeidelbergCement is set to release its third quarter financial results later this week. In the meantime what can the results from the other major cement producers tell us?

The biggest of the big beasts, China National Building Material (CNBM), released its third quarter update last week. As usual for a major Chinese producer it was the expected story of continuing double-digit growth. Operating income up, profit up and little other information besides.
CNBM’s half-year report back in August 2018 had more information, revealing that cement production volume fell by 5% year-on-year to 143Mt in the first half of 2018 from 150Mt in the same period in 2017. This was pinned on ‘flat’ demand, increased pressure on environmental protection and rising costs of fuel and raw materials. As we mentioned at the time the state-owned company is attempting to cope with the aftermath of China’s great construction boom. National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data shows that local cement sales dropped by 8% year-on-year to 158Mt in the first nine months of 2018. CNBM’s cement sales are likely to have dropped also so far in 2018 but continuing industry consolidation and/or the merger with Sinoma may save them. With this in mind note the lack of sales volumes figures from CNBM and Anhui Conch in Graph 2 below.

Of the other larger Chinese producers, Anhui Conch’s third quarter report was similarly sparse, sticking to the facts (revenue and profit up) and discussing in more detail a recent large-scale sale and purchase agreement with Jiangsu Conch Building Materials with a value of up to around US$230m. China Resources Cement is typically more verbose in its results releases. Its turnover and profits are also up so far in 2018 but it actually explained that cement and clinker prices had risen by 32%.
Outside of China, LafargeHolcim’s results were mixed in a direct year-on-year comparison but more favourable on a like-for-like basis. Net sales and cement sales volumes are growing slowly but recurring earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) fell very slightly. Growth in Europe and North America was countered by issues in Asia Pacific, Latin America and Middle East Africa. Chief executive Jan Jenisch was more optimistic than at the same point in 2017 with no talk of ‘lacking potential’ and more emphasis on ‘positive momentum.’
As for the others, both Cemex and UltraTech Cement are looking good so far. Growth in Mexico and the US has bolstered Cemex’s performance giving, it a 7% year-on-year boost to US$10.9bn in the first nine months of 2018. Cement sales volumes grew more slowly at 3%, although operating EBITDA remained flat. Part of this was down to poorer markets south of Mexico, notably in Colombia. UltraTech Cement is still looking good after its acquisition of Jaiprakash Associates’ plants in 2017 but earnings and profits have started to decline. The Indian market leader has blamed this on mounting energy and logistics costs coupled with local currency depreciation effects.
So, in summary, generally good news from the big producers, although issues are present in certain markets, notably South America. HeidelbergCement has already set the scene for its third quarter results with a warning that its earnings are down due to poor weather in the US and rising energy costs. Sales volumes and revenue are said to be ‘within expectations.’ Its Indian subsidiary, HeidelbergCement India, reported storming figures for its half-year to the end of September 2018 with double-digit growth across sales, sales volumes and earnings. Less reassuringly, its larger Indonesian subsidiary reported falling sales for the first nine months of 2018. All eyes will be on HeidelbergCement later in the week to see how this plays out.
Worker dies at UltraTech Cement’s Reddipalayam plant
06 November 2018India: A welder has died at UltraTech Cement’s Reddipalayam plant in Tamil Nadu. The contract worker died following a fall from a height of 8m, according to the New Indian Express newspaper. Relatives and local residents staged a protest following the incident.
India: The Calcutta High Court has rejected a plea for an injunction by the owners of MP Birla Group into part of the acquisition process of Century Textiles and Industries by UltraTech Cement. The Lodha family holds a significant stake in Pilani Investment and Industries Corporation, which, in turn, owns a stake in Century Textiles and Industries, according to the Daily News and Analysis newspaper. It had argued that the demerger process as part of the sale of Century Textiles and Industries would seriously affect the remaining parts of its business. UltraTech Cement received approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for the acquisition of the cement business of Century Textiles and Industries in late August 2018.
UltraTech Cement profit down so far as costs mount
19 October 2018India: UltraTech Cement’s income rose by 15% year-on-year to US$2.37bn in the six months to the end of September 2018 from US$2.05bn. However, its net profit fell by 24% to US$137m from US$180m. The cement producer blamed its profit drop on mounting energy and logistics costs coupled with local currency depreciation effects. Its cement sales volumes rose by 28% to 31.9Mt from 25Mt.
