Cementos Rezola donates to Gipuzkoa Food Bank
22 September 2022Spain: Heidelberg Materials subsidiary Cementos Rezola has made a donation of 1t-worth of food to the Gipuzkoa Food Bank, which delivers food to households across Gipuzkoa Province. Europa Press News has reported that the cement producer despatched the donation from its Añorga cement plant in San Sebastián.
Cementos Rezola thanked the Gipuzkoa Food Bank for its work in support of 'Gipuzkoan families that are going through difficult times in a context marked by the cost of living and the increase in costs of energy.'
Lucky Cement distributes flood aid
15 September 2022Pakistan: Lucky Cement has distributed ration bags, tents and first aid kits to victims of flooding Dadu, Khairpur, Sanghar and Uthal.
The Balochistan Times newspaper has reported that the company said “The immense destruction of houses and damages to crops caused by the floods, made victims homeless and they are now in the state of starvation.” It continued “In this time of crisis, Lucky Cement, Pakistan's largest cement manufacturer, has reached out to far-flung areas which were worst affected by the flash floods in North and South of Pakistan to provide relief to the victims.”
Siam City Cement donates to Sri Lankans in crisis
04 August 2022Thailand/Sri Lanka: Siam City Cement has despatched US$111,000-worth of medical supplies and monetary donations to Sri Lanka as humanitarian aid amid the on-going financial crisis in the country. Year-on-year inflation was 61% in July 2022.
The Nation newspaper reported that the Thai government has donated a total of US$158,000-worth of supplies to the country. It said “The donations reflect the close and cordial ties as well as the goodwill between Thai and Sri Lankan people.”
JSW Cement builds Maa Kali temple in Salboni
15 July 2022India: JSW Cement has dedicated a new temple at its Ankur commune in Salboni, West Bengal, to the goddess Maa Kali. The Orissa Diary newspaper has reported that architecture firm Dulal Mukherjee and Associates designed the temple in the 17th century Bishnupur style. The place of worship is made of locally sourced terracotta.
JSW Cement spokesperson Anushree Jindal said "JSW Cement believes in collaborating with local communities to empower them for a better future. I feel blessed and privileged to have facilitated the creation of a pious, safe haven of worship for the local community in Salboni."
Morocco: Holcim subsidiary LafargeHolcim Maroc has released information about its 1.6Mt/yr Agadir cement plant in Souss-Massa Region. The producer invested US$299m in the plant’s construction and it has been operational since late 2021. The plant is highly automated in line with Holcim’s Plants of Tomorrow strategy. It will run off wind power from 2023, and also uses alternative fuel (AF). 200 people work at the plant.
In conjunction with its work in setting up the new cement plant, LafargeHolcim Maroc developed drinking water networks in the surrounding area, including the construction of three solar-powered water towers.
BUA Cement helps communities in Sokoto state
13 June 2022Nigeria: BUA Cement has donated a solar motorised borehole and medicines worth US$59,600 to eight host communities in Wamakko, Sokoto State. The company says that the efforts are aimed at alleviating the effects of local water scarcity and medicinal supply issues.
Dalmia Bharat Foundation signs memorandum of understanding to train 600 young people annually
19 May 2022India: Dalmia Bharat Foundation has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bokaro Steel Plant for the training of 600 new young people from Bokaro every year. Under the initiative, the partners will run short, placement-based courses at the DIKSHa (Dalmia Institute of Knowledge and Skill Harnessing) centre.
Dalmia Bharat Foundation CEO and Dalmia Bharat group head - corporate social responsibility Vishal Bhardwaj said “Since our inception in 2009, we’ve witnessed our role gradually transform from being a resource provider to a key enabler for positive change in society. While we’ve created a legacy of development and change for the better, we continue to strive to ensure that we meet newer economic and environmental needs and close wider societal gaps as much as possible.”
Philippines: Holcim Philippines has donated 3000 Covid-19 vaccinations to the Lorma Medical Center in San Fernando, La Union. The Business Mirror newspaper has reported that the company aims to help increase inoculation levels in remote parts of the province, at a time when tourism is beginning again.
Vice president and head of communications and corporate social responsibility Cara Ramirez said “We are thankful to the Lorma Medical Center for being our partner in providing vaccines to our neighbours in La Union. We are hopeful that this donation will further strengthen the province's resilience against the disease as we enter summer and tourism once again booms. While the pandemic appears to be easing, we need to remain vigilant and encourage everyone to avail themselves of the vaccines to be more protected.”
Colombia: Cementos Argos says that 368,000 people directly benefited from its social investment programmes in Colombia in 2021. During the year, the company invested US$4.56m in projects including its Hogares Saludables home improvement programme and its Via Forte road infrastructure programme. The Via Forte programme has laid 600km of road since 2017, while the Hogares Saludables programme aims to assist and improve over 10,000 homes by 2027.
Holcim to depart Russian market
29 March 2022Russia: Switzerland-based Holcim has announced its upcoming exit from the Russian cement market in line with its corporate value ‘to operate in the most responsible manner.’ The Global Cement Directory 2022 records a total of four Holcim cement plants in the country, commanding a capacity of 9.2Mt/yr.
Holcim’s board of directors thanked all employees currently mobilising to provide shelter, essential goods and medical supplies and other support to Ukrainians.
The group had previously suspended new capital investments into the market on 15 March 2022.
