Vietnam reports 3.9% decline in eight-month cement production in 2020
01 September 2020Vietnam: Cement producers increased the total domestic output of cement by 3.9% year-on-year to 64.2Mt in the first eight months of 2020 from 61.8Mt over the corresponding period of 2019. Continuing at this rate, Vietnam will produce 96.3Mt of cement in 2020, down by 0.2% from 96.5Mt in 2019.
Uruguay’s second-quarter cement sales decline by 3.9%
20 August 2020Uruguay: Cement producers sold 166,000t of cement in the second quarter of 2020, down by 3.9% year-on-year from 173,000t in the second quarter of 2019. The country exported 5600t of this (3%), up by 3.9% from 5380t. Domestic sales fell by 4.1% to 160,000t from 153,000t, corresponding to 84% of a domestic consumption of 190,000t, down by 4.2% from 200,000t. Imports rose by 8.8% to 30,000t from 27,400t.
Azerbaijan: Azerbaijan produced 1.56Mt of cement in the first half of 2020, representing a 2.7% year-on-year decline from 1.60Mt in the half of 2019. Concrete sales increased by 6.5% to 0.83Mt from 0.78Mt, while the total value of construction materials sales fell by 4.8% to US$251m from US$264m.
Vietnam: Producers have reported a 5.4% fall in value of cement and clinker exports to US$732m in the first seven months of 2020 from US$774m in the corresponding period of 2019. Volumes increased by 11% to 19.5Mt from 17.6Mt. Dautu Online News has reported that Bangladesh, China and the Philippines were among import markets for Vietnamese cement.
The Ministry of Construction maintains its 2019 projection of 32Mt – 33Mt of cement and clinker exports in 2020.
Dominican Republic: Domestic cement production declined by 24% year-on-year to 2.1Mt in the first half of 2020 from 2.8Mt in the first half of 2019, corresponding to 62% capacity utilisation. Domestic consumption over the period also fell, by 20% year-on-year.
VDZ forecasts level cement demand in 2020
12 August 2020Germany: The Verein Deutscher Zementwerke (VDZ) has forecast domestic cement consumption of 28.7Mt in 2020, consistent with the 2019 level. The impacts of the coronavirus lockdown were offset by “a good start to the year, not least due to the weather conditions” and “the continued operation of construction sites in March thanks to the quick actions of politicians.”
The organisation said that the situation was unprecedentedly unpredictable with orders and building permits currently in decline. It expects demand to partly tail off in the fourth quarter of 2020, falling by between 3 - 5%, as companies postpone or discard planned developments in the face of restricted budgets. It said, “Nonetheless, the government’s economic stimulus pacts will undoubtedly provide a positive impetus through such initiatives as public infrastructure and multi-family housing projects.
Vietnam: Cement producers sold 45.7Mt of cement and clinker in the first half of 2020, down by 3% year-on-year from 47.1Mt in the first half of 2019. Exports grew by 1% to 15.6Mt from 15.4Mt. The Vietnamese National Cement Association (VNCA) says that producers retain a total of 0.8Mt of cement and 4.2Mt of clinker in inventory.
Colombia: Cement production fell by 20.8% year-on-year to 4.88Mt in the first half of 2020 from 6.17Mt in the same period in 2019. Data from DANE, the Colombian statistics organisation, shows that local despatches fell at a similar rate. Production in June 2020 dropped by 4.7% year-on-year to 0.98Mt from 1.03Mt in June 2019. Local cement production hit a low in April 2020 when the government imposed coronavirus-related lockdowns.
Argentina: Cement despatches fell by 30.6% year-on-year to 3.83Mt in the first half of 2020 from 5.51Mt in the same period in 2019. Data from the Asociación de Fabricantes de Cemento Portland (AFCP) shows that monthly despatches from the local market, exports and imports hit a low of 0.41Mt in April 2020, a 55% year-on-year drop, before starting to recover. Despatches were 0.80Mt in June 2020m , a 7% decline from 0.86Mt in June 2019. Local consumption has fallen by a similar proportion.
Indian cement production falls by 85% in first half of 2020
03 August 2020India: Data from the Commerce and Industry Ministry shows that cement production fell by 85% year-on-year to 26.3Mt in the first six months of 2020 from 178Mt in the same period in 2019. Cement production in June 2020 fell by 7% year-on-year in June 2020 to 26.3Mt from 28.0Mt. India implemented a coronavirus-related lockdown that shut down industrial plants from late-March 2020 to early May 2020.
