National Transmission and Despatch Company to build new grid station for Chakwal cement plants
19 December 2022Pakistan: National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) has secured a US$46.6m loan from German state-owned bank KfW for construction of a new 500kV grid station in Chakwal, Punjab. The German government loaned NTDC a further US$2.55m for power capacity expansions. The investments will go towards increasing the availability of electricity in Chakwal, primarily for the benefit of the district's multiple cement plants.
Bestway Cement, DG Khan Cement and Gharibwal cement operate four cement plants with a total capacity of 8.5Mt/yr in Chakwal.
Bestway Cement is a Carbon Neutralisation Pioneer
28 November 2022Pakistan/UAE: China-based renewables supplier LONGi Green Energy Technology has awarded Bestway Cement its Carbon Neutralisation Pioneer award at a ceremony in Dubai, UAE. The award acknowledges progress in industrial sustainability during the past year. Bestway Cement is the first Pakistani recipient of the prize.
Bestway Cement operates 62MW-worth of solar power capacity at installations at its Chakwal, Farooqia, Hattar and Kallar Kahar cement plants. Managing director Irfan Sheikh said that this setup enables it to minimise CO2 emissions and the company's reliance on the national grid. Bestway Cement was also the first Pakistani cement producer to install waste heat recovery (WHR) plants across all of its integrated cement plants.
Kohat Cement to establish 10MW solar power plant
18 July 2022Pakistan: Kohat Cement has informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange of its plan to establish a 10MW solar power plant at the site of its Kohat cement plant in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The producer says that the plant will be connected to the national grid.
Cement producers lobby Telangana government against Grid Support Charge levy on captive power plants
15 March 2022India: The South India Cement Manufacturers’ Association (SICMA) has joined the Confederation of Indian Industry and the associations of other Telangana industries in lobbying the state government against its proposed Grid Support Charge levy on captive power plants operating in parallel to the state grid. The Hindu Business Line News has reported that power plant operators will pay a monthly levy of US$37,100/MW, potentially from 1 April 2022.
One cement company official said “Some of the most industry-friendly states such as Odisha, Karnataka and West Bengal do not levy such charges, while Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat levy a minimal rate of US$261 – 392/MW per month.”
DG Khan’s Hub plant commences electricity supply to Pakistan grid
09 September 2021Pakistan: DG Khan has connected its upgraded Hub cement plant and power infrastructure to the national grid. The Pakistan Observer newspaper has reported that the facilities generate 40MW of power via a 10MW waste heat recovery (WHR) plant and 30MW coal-fired power plant. China National Building Material (CNBM) subsidiary Sinoma Energy Conservation provided engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for both power plants.
GE delivers grid to DG Khan Cement’s Hub plant
30 November 2018Pakistan: GE says it has delivered a turnkey power grid to DG Khan Cement’s Hub plant in Baluchistan. The grid includes a 132/6.3kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), 40MVA power transformers and other related auxiliary equipment. The power solution also includes an extension at K-Electric’s Hub Chowki grid station with a 132kV AIS bay connecting it to the DG Khan Cement grid station. GE also supplied engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of the 132/6.3kV grid station.
“As one of the largest cement producers in Pakistan, our aim is to create a facility for the future, not only to meet local demand but also to serve the international market. To support these efforts, we needed a field-proven stable and reliable grid solution and therefore after thorough evaluation we selected GE’s solutions. Given GE’s experience spanning across a wide range of industries and applications, we are pleased to work with the team on this critical project,” said Arif Bashir, Director (Tech & Ops) at DG Khan Cement.
DG Khan Cement officially opened the Hub plant in July 2018. The unit has a cement production capacity of 2.8Mt/yr.
