Tokuyama Corporation commissions ABB Expert Optimizer system at Nanyo cement plant

25 August 2023

Japan: Tokuyama Corporation has installed ABB’s Expert Optimizer automated optimisation system in the kiln line of its Nanyo cement plant. The system controls the line’s calciner, kiln and cooler processes. The supplier says that the technology will reduce the Nanyo cement plant’s thermal energy consumption by 3%.

Tokuyama Corporation "We selected ABB's Expert Optimizer to equalise operations and improve operational efficiency. As expected, we have significantly reduced the number of the operator manual operations normally spent on manual tasks.” It added “We believe that this solution will also support our young operators in learning the know-how of our operations efficiently."

EU enacts carbon border adjustment mechanism regulation

18 August 2023

Europe: The EU has enacted the implementing regulation for the carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) under its emissions trading scheme (ETS). Under the CBAM, importers of cement to the EU will eventually pay taxes for its embedded CO2 emissions, equivalent to those levied against EU-based producers. Importers must begin to collect emissions data from 1 October 2023, and submit a report for the fourth quarter of 2023 to EU authorities by 31 January 2024. No financial adjustment will yet be payable during the transition period to full CBAM implementation from the start of 2026.

The Asset newspaper has reported that dedicated IT tools and training materials for importers affected by the CBAM are currently in development, according to the European Commission.

Orient Cement commences US$242m Devapur cement plant expansion

09 May 2023

India: Orient Cement has laid the foundation stone of an expansion to its Devapur cement plant in Telangana's Mancherial District. The Hindu Online News has reported that the project will increase the plant's capacity by 60% to 8Mt/yr. Orient Cement will reportedly participate in the establishment of the nearby Belampalli skill development centre to help train local youths.

YTL Cement signs sustainability agreement with the Construction Research Institute of Malaysia

Malaysia: YTL Cement has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Construction Research Institute of Malaysia (CREAM) to support the transition of the local construction industry to sustainable construction practices. Under the deal, YTL Cement will also contribute to the Construction Industry Development Board’s (CIDB) goals by rolling out human resource development programmes, research and development initiatives.

As part of the MOU, YTL and the CIDB will jointly design training programmes for young adults to be certified as concrete technicians and develop the training syllabus for accreditation programmes of qualified personnel in operations. It is hoped that this will assist in attracting, retaining and growing skilled workers in the construction industry. CREAM will work with YTL Cement’s team of experts to conduct research and development on lower embodied carbon alternatives in materials and construction methods. CIDB and YTL Cement will also work together to increase awareness on the embodied carbon of the construction sector by providing channels for discussions and knowledge transfer among industry practitioners and experts.

Holcim Argentina seeking Young Leaders

Argentina: Holcim Argentina has announced the launch of its Young Leaders youth professional development programme in its host provinces of Córdoba, Buenos Aires, Jujuy and Mendoza. The programme seeks to identify 15 'innovative, curious and results-oriented' young talents with qualifications and experience in the area of industrial, mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering, business administration, marketing, architecture or logistics. Those chosen will occupy eight-month placements at the company, beginning on 15 May 2023. There, they will manage projects under the guidance of a tutor.

Holcim Argentina's head of talent and development Claudia Vitale said "Young Leaders is specially designed to accelerate young professionals' growth by placing them in a high-performance team. It is an excellent opportunity for personal and professional development in a global industry-leading company."

100 Continental Cement workers go on strike

28 February 2023

US: 100 Workers at Continental Cement's Hannibal cement plant in Missouri are on strike against alleged unfair labour practices. IndustriALL Global Union has accused the producer of restricting employees' say in schedules, overtime and cross training requirements at the plant, as well as of withholding information necessary for bargaining. The union additionally alleged that the company was discriminatory in its termination of contracts. The workers have continued to work amid on-going contract renegotiations following the expiry of a collective agreement between them and the producer in May 2022.

IndustriALL Global Union said "Continental Cement’s actions have left workers no other options but to make their voices heard by striking against unfair labour practices. We are determined to fight for the fair contract. It's time for Continental Cement to follow the law and negotiate in good faith for a fair contract.”

Fauji Cement wins fire safety award

Pakistan: Fauji Cement is among 50 Pakistani industrial companies to win a prize at the 12th Fire Safety 2022 on 4 December 2022, the Balochistan Times has reported. Fire Protection Industry of Pakistan (FPIP) and the National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH) selected the winners for their fire safety investments, training time, awareness practices and state of equipment, with the aim of controlling incidents of fire and saving lives.

Dalmia Bharat Foundation signs memorandum of understanding to train 600 young people annually

India: Dalmia Bharat Foundation has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bokaro Steel Plant for the training of 600 new young people from Bokaro every year. Under the initiative, the partners will run short, placement-based courses at the DIKSHa (Dalmia Institute of Knowledge and Skill Harnessing) centre.

Dalmia Bharat Foundation CEO and Dalmia Bharat group head - corporate social responsibility Vishal Bhardwaj said “Since our inception in 2009, we’ve witnessed our role gradually transform from being a resource provider to a key enabler for positive change in society. While we’ve created a legacy of development and change for the better, we continue to strive to ensure that we meet newer economic and environmental needs and close wider societal gaps as much as possible.”

India: The Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) has named Ambuja Cements’ Rabriyawas cement plant as winner of its National Safety Award (Mines). Its winning initiatives include its Behaviour Based Safety training programme and Reward & Recognition employee engagement programme. Ambuja Cements said that the award confirms that Ambuja's Zero Harm policy has borne fruit.

Caribbean Cement’s Rockfort cement plant celebrates 1000 days accident free

25 April 2022

Jamaica: Caribbean Cement says that its Rockfort cement plant in Kingston has surpassed 1000 days without a health and safety incident among employees and contractors. Health and safety coordinator Andre Haynes said that the achievement demonstrates that parent company Cemex’s Zero4Life zero-incident policy is possible.

Haynes said “As a company, we have invested heavily in the people aspect, with training geared towards improved safety and culture, and capital expenditure to improve the overall safety of the plant.” He said that the Rockfort cement plant will advance to its next safety milestone by keeping its focus on ‘closing all unsafe conditions’ and developing employees as health and safety champions.
