Algeria to start exporting cement
11 December 2017Algeria: Trade Minister Mohamed Benmeradi says that Algeria will commence cement exports. An export of Ordinary Portland Cement will be made to Gambia via the port of Arzew, according to the El Moudjahid newspaper. In a separate statement LafargeHolcim Algeria said that it was exporting 16,000t of cement to West Africa from its plant at Oggaz.
Two more Algerian plants
27 November 2017Algeria: Already an exporter of cement, Algeria is set to gain two further cement plants by 2020. The CEO of GICA Group, Rabah Guessoum, has indicated that his group has already begun construction of a 1Mt/yr plant in Béchar and a 2Mt/yr plant at Sigus, Oum El Bouaghi.
By 2020 the group will reach a cement production capacity of around 20Mt/yr. Regarding exports, Guessoum noted that with the satisfaction of domestic demand, the surplus will be exported to other African countries, in accordance with the guidelines of the public authorities. He said, "Currently we are in discussion with international operators to form possible partnerships to place our products internationally."
Algeria to stop cement imports in 2018
20 September 2017Algeria: Mohamed Benmeradi, the minister of commerce, says that Algeria will stop importing cement in 2018. He stated on national radio that the country is producing enough cement and is now considering exports, according to the Liberté Algerie newspaper. The government is amending the import licence system to encourage local growth.
Tunisia: Carthage Cement’s cement sales have fallen due to a ban on sales to Algeria. Its clinker production volumes fell by 27% year-on-year to 0.57Mt in the first half of 2017 from 0.78Mt in the same period in 2016 and its cement production fell by 13% to 0.72Mt from 0.83Mt. Cement export sales fell by 79% and overall its sales fell by 18% to Euro31.6m from Euro38.7m. However, the cement producer said it increased its market share in the period.
LafargeHolcim expands retail network for construction materials in Middle East and Africa
15 June 2017Middle East/Africa: LafargeHolcim is expanding its specialised Binastore retail network for construction materials in Middle East and Africa. The construction materials producer already operates 500 stores in the region that serves end-consumers, self-builders, masons and smaller contractors. The newly-branded network will sell a broad range of LafargeHolcim’s own products and solutions as well as a variety of other construction materials from partner suppliers.
The first stores operating under the Binastore brand have begun to serve customers in Algeria, Cameroon, Iraq and Lebanon. The format of the stores will vary with sizes from 50m2 to 2000m2 and it will also include mobile stores in some rural locations. Existing stores in the region will gradually be rebranded as Binastore, while new stores will also open under this brand.
“Our vision is to build the largest retail network for construction materials in the Middle East Africa region so the Binastore brand becomes a household name for small and medium-size builders. Building on our success in Algeria, our goal is to deliver a range of building products, including our own, through multiple channels to meet the needs and lifestyle of our customers who are becoming more and more sophisticated,” said Saâd Sebbar, Region Head Middle East Africa.
The Binastore network is part of LafargeHolcim’s long-term strategy of expanding its retail business in emerging markets. In April 2017, the group announced the rollout of Disensa, a similar concept, in Latin America, where the goal is to have a network of around 1000 stores operating by the end of 2017.
Algeria: The Saoura Cement Company has ordered a MVR 5000 R-4 mill from Gebr. Pfeiffer for a new cement plant at Bechar. The 350t/hr raw cement mill will grind material to a fineness of 12% R90µm and the drive will have a power of 3800kW. Delivery for the mill is scheduled for the first half of 2018. The MVR mill is the fourth that Gebr. Pfeiffer has received an order for in Algeria.
ASEC sells Algerian asset
22 May 2017Algeria: ASEC Cement Company and ASEC Cement Djelfa Offshore have sold their 100% stake in ASEC Ciment Algerie to an Algerian investor for US$60m. ASEC Cement is based in Egypt, while ASEC Cement Djelfa and ASEC Ciment Algerie are based in Algeria.
Algeria: The Saoura Cement Company has chosen a MVR 5000 R-4 mill from Gebr. Pfeiffer for the new production line at its plant in Zahana. The 425t/hr raw cement mill will grind material to a fineness of 12 % R90µm and the drive will have a power of 3500kW. The expected moisture level of the input material will be 13%. The order was placed by CBMI, a subsidiary of China’s Sinoma, that is building a plant upgrade for Groupe des Ciments d’Algérie (GICA).
Algeria: Fives installed the first FCB B cement grinding mill in early April 2017 at Entreprise des Ciments et Dérivés d’El Chellif’s (ECDE) 6000t/day clinker production line at Chlef. Installation of the mill followed the erection of the FCB kiln (Ø 5.1 x L 82m) in February 2017. A heavy lifting jack crane system sliding on rails was required to install the 4.8 x 17.8m shell and 98.5t gearbox inside its specific finished building. Grinding mills no. 2 and no. 3 will be installed next to complete the cement grinding mills at the unit. Once complete it will include three 160t/hr FCB B-mills with 5320kW drives and associated FCB TSV4500 HF classifiers. ECDE is a member of the industrial group Ciments d’Algérie (GICA).
Algeria to produce surplus of cement in 2017
19 April 2017Algeria: Abdesslem Bouchouareb, the Minister of Industry and Mines, has said that Algeria will report a surplus in cement production later in 2017. The minister said that the country is expecting to produce 30Mt of cement due to newly commissioned plants, according to the Algeria Press Service. He added that a ‘disturbance’ in the cement market had been caused by speculation and that the government was determined protect the local economy. The minister previously announced the commissioning of new plants at Adrar and in Biskra in April 2017.
