Nigeria: Finland-based Wärtsilä has signed a 10-year operations and maintenance (O&M) agreement for a captive power plant that provides the energy for Mangal Industries’ cement plant located in Kogi State. The cement plant has limited access to the local electricity grid and its power plant operates with five Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engines delivering an output of 50MW. The O&M agreement is designed to ensure that the facility can reliably maintain its cement production target of 3Mt/yr.

The 10-year agreement starts immediately as the unit commences operations in the second quarter of 2024. It will run on liquid fuel initially but then switch to gas operation when a natural gas pipeline is commissioned. The power plant’s dual-fuel engines can be operated both on liquid fuel and natural gas. They could also be potentially converted to operate with low- or zero-carbon fuels in the future subject to availability.

Patrick Borstner, Director, Operations Africa at Wärtsilä Energy said, “Wärtsilä now has more than 400MW of installed capacity for the cement industry in Nigeria, and we are operating three captive power plants in three different states. This successful track record clearly indicates our capabilities and highlights the added value we can deliver to our customers through our experience and expertise in supporting their operations.”

Mangal Industries signed a contract with China-based Sinoma International Engineering in 2021 for the construction of a 3Mt/yr new integrated cement plant. Construction at the site commenced in mid-2022.

Zambia: Chilanga Cement has started lime production at its Ndola plant. The new lime unit at the plant has a production capacity of 108,000t/yr, according to the Times of Zambia newspaper. The project had an investment of US$5m. The subsidiary of Switzerland-based Holcim has launched a new lime produced called ‘PAWA Lime’ targeted at the mining and industrial sectors.

South Sudan: B Smart, an investment company owned by son of a former Malaysian Prime Minister, plans to invest US$100m in constructing a cement plant near the capital city of Juba. The plant is targeted to be operational within 24 months pending necessary approvals, and will use limestone from Kapoeta, 275km east of Juba.

Deputy Secretary for Commerce and Industry, Kuol Daniel Ayulo, said "The plant will reduce the country's reliance on costly cement imports and accelerate infrastructure development."

Philippines: Phinma Corp is set to expand its cement business with new facilities in Mindanao, according to a spokesperson for the company. The producer will establish a cement plant in Davao, valued at US$34.7m, which will bring the company’s total capacity to 5Mt/yr once completed. The plant is currently awaiting its environmental clearance certificate.

Additionally, the Petra plant in Zamboanga del Norte has started operations, with a cement grinding capacity of 500,000t/yr.

India: JK Cement has inaugurated a US$341m new line at its Panna cement plant in Madhya Pradesh. The new line doubles the plant's capacity from 3.3Mt/yr to 6.6Mt/yr. Press Trust of India News has reported that the line is equipped with optimised kiln systems, energy-saving technologies and a waste heat recovery plant. The expanded Panna plant will help serve ‘growing demand’ in Central India, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Managing director Raghavpat Singhania said "Our new Panna plant production line is a key pillar in our comprehensive business expansion plan, propelling us towards our vision of becoming a leading player in the cement industry. This strategic expansion allows us to meet the rising demand for high-quality cement, ultimately enhancing our ability to serve our customers.”

Uzbekistan: China-based Conch International Holdings and Zhejiang Shangfeng Building Materials have successfully inaugurated their new 2.5Mt/yr Andijan cement plant, near Nayman on the border with Kyrgyzstan. Trend News has reported the cost of the plant as US$250m.

Malaysia: The state government of Sabah broke ground on the construction of the Kampung Kawayoi Pinangah cement plant in Tongod on 27 April 2024. Bernama Daily Malaysian News has reported the value of investment in the plant’s construction as US$252m. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said that it will enrich the local economy with 1000 new job opportunities.

Australia: Cement Australia has received a US$34.4m federal grant for a kiln upgrade to its Railton cement plant in Tasmania. The upgrade will allow the plant to raise its alternative fuels substitution rate. The project is funded by the government’s Powering the Regions initiative, with total investments valued at US$215m.

Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said “This US$215m investment in Australia’s hard-to-abate manufacturing and mining facilities is about securing the future of high-quality, low-emissions products made right here. Northern Tasmania, Central Queensland and Western Australia have been industrial powerhouses for generations, and the government is ensuring that continues. As global markets change rapidly, we’re supporting Australian industry to not only survive but thrive with our world-class products that support regional jobs across the country.”

Australia: The Australian federal government has granted Adbri US$32.5m for a new front-end engineering and design study at its Birkenhead cement plant. The study will assess the possible installation of a new vertical roller mill and post-production blending system at the plant. InDaily News has reported that the proposed upgrade will increase the plant’s production capacity and help to expand its range of reduced-CO₂ cements. The funding falls under the government’s US$260m Critical Inputs to Clean Energy programme, which aims to help decarbonise the Australian economy by 2050.

CEO Mark Irwin said “With the Commonwealth’s support we have the potential to further accelerate the decarbonisation of our operations and products.”

Germany: Holcim Deutschland has broken ground on the construction of a new kiln line and CO₂ processing unit at its Lägerdorf cement plant in Schleswig-Holstein. The line will feature an OxyFuel kiln, supplied by ThyssenKrupp. ThyssenKrupp’s OxyFuel technology will assist in the capture of 1.2Mt/yr (nearly 100%) of CO₂ from the plant. The partners described the upcoming upgraded Lägerdorf plant as one of the world's first carbon-neutral cement plants.

Holcim Deutschland CEO Thorsten Hahn said "We're laying the groundwork for a sustainable world through cement. Cement is essential for our cities, factories, homes, bridges and beyond. As we transition towards renewable energy, we must also construct the foundations and structures for wind turbines and railway tracks. With our climate-neutral cement plant, we ensure that this vital building material remains accessible without further harm to the atmosphere."

ThyssenKrupp Decarbon Technologies’ chief strategy officer Cetin Nazikkol said “It’s vital to switch to climate-friendly processes. By enriching CO₂ by means of the pure OxyFuel technology we’ve developed, we help our customers capture almost all of the CO₂ arising in the production process and so reuse it in a sustainable manner. Given that global cement production is more than 4Bnt/yr, we see enormous growth potential for our innovative technology.”
