Indonesia: The Indonesia government says that it will ask for compensation if the Philippines Tariff Commission extends tariffs on cement. The Manila Bulletin newspaper has reported that the government suggested that the fellow Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member state should take more targeted measures against any country responsible for cement dumping, in line with the bloc’s rules.

In 2019 – 2021, Indonesia exported 532,000t of cement to the Philippines, constituting 2.7% of the country’s cement imports. Vietnam, meanwhile, exported 15.8Mt (80%).

Philippines: The Philippines imported 6.47Mt of cement from Vietnam in 2021, 91% of a total 7.11Mt of cement imported in the year. The Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines (CeMAP) recorded that total imports increased by 14% year-on-year from 6.25Mt of cement in 2020, while imports from Vietnam increased by 20% year-on-year from 5.4Mt.

The Manila Bulletin newspaper has reported that Philippine cement producers increased their production capacity by 23% year-on-year to 35.3Mt/yr at the beginning of 2022. CeMAP projected further capacity growth of 55% to 54.8Mt/yr by the end of 2025, against a domestic demand that year of 66Mt/yr.

Vietnam: Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA) members exported 15.5Mt of cement in the first five months of 2022, down by 14% year-on-year from 16.2Mt in the corresponding period of 2021. The value of the cement and clinker was US$693m, up slightly from US$690m.

In May 2022, Vietnam exported 1.5Mt of cement and clinker, with a value US$92m, down by 52% in volume and up by 29% in value year-on-year.

Vietnam: Three new integrated cement lines are expected to raise Vietnam’s total installed cement capacity by 8% to 115.4Mt/yr in 2022, from 106.6Mt/yr at the beginning of the year. VNDirect Securities has calculated that the upcoming lines – Dai Duong 1, Long Thanh and Xuan Thanh 3 – have a total capacity of 8.8Mt/yr. They are situated in Northern Vietnam’s Ha Nam Province and Central Vietnam’s Thanh Hoa Province, both of which already have cement overcapacity.

Viet Nam News has reported that Vietnam exported 4.31Mt of cement and clinker in April 2022, down by 7.6% month-on-month. The products’ total value was US$171m, down by 2.9% month-on-month.

Vietnam: ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions Vietnam (TISV) and the Vietnam Institute of Building Materials (VIBM) have signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation between both parties on the research and application of new technologies towards reducing the CO₂ emissions of cement production. At the signing ceremony, Lukas Schoeneck, the chief executive officer of TISV confirmed his commitment to collaborate with VIBM, under the guidance of the Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Van Sinh. The parties now plan to identify a lighthouse project that will use alternative fuels in response to an increase in the global price of coal.

Pham Van Bac, Head of the Building Material Division at the Ministry of Construction, said that Vietnam is implementing the a strategy for the development of building materials for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050. The plan for the cement industry is to limit the use of natural resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save energy while promoting the maximum use of waste streams from industries and domestic sources as raw materials in cement production.

Vietnam: Vicem Hoàng Mai Cement has announced a full-year sales target of US$79.2m for 2022, down by 1.5% year-on-year from 2021 levels. Its target net profit for the year is US$656,000, more than five times its 2020 figure. The company forecasts cement production of 1.73Mt, up by 11% from 1.56Mt, and clinker production of 1.4Mt, down by 4.1% from 1.46Mt, for the year. It plans to replace 30 – 40% of the natural gypsum currently used in cement production with synthetic gypsum. It will also increase the proportion of ash and slag in its raw materials mix.

The Chúng Khoán newspaper has reported that Vicem Hoàng Mai Cement said that it is experiencing increased costs due to high raw materials and fossil fuel prices. A coal shortage has also disrupted production.

South Africa: PPC expects its group cement sales volumes to increase by 4 - 8% year-on-year for the financial year to 31 March 2022 due to strong performance in Zimbabwe and Rwanda. In an operational update it said that sales revenue is also expected to rise by 11 – 15%. However, sales volumes and sales revenue growth was reported as slower in South Africa and Botswana due to strong demand due to home improvement projects during the previous period.

The cement producer noted that it had yet to experience any ‘meaningful uplift’ in cement sales following the government’s decision to only use locally produced on infrastructure projects. It said that cement sales in coastal regions of South Africa were behind those in the previous reporting year. It said that cement imports, mainly from Vietnam, increased by 11% and accounted for approximately 10% of the local market.

US: Cement shipments grew by 4.2% year-on-year to 107Mt in 2021 from 103Mt in 2020. Data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) show that domestic shipments and imports rose by 2.3% to 90.8Mt and 16% to 16.3Mt respectively. Regionally, particular gains were reported in New England and Middle Atlantic, West North Central, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Arizona and New Mexico. Puerto Rico reported a 47% decline in shipments. The largest cement exporting nations to the US were Turkey, Canada, Greece, Mexico and Vietnam. Turkey, Greece and Vietnam each increased their imports by over 30% in 2021.

Thailand: Siam City Cement's (SCC) sales, volumes and earnings picked up in the second half of 2021 following the easing of Covid-19-related lockdown measures in Thailand and Vietnam. Price rises, especially outside of Thailand, also reportedly helped to compensate for higher raw material, energy and transportation costs.

The group’s full-year consolidated sales fell slightly to US$1.28bn in 2021 from US$1.29bn in 2020. Sales revenue from its cement division rose by 3% year-on-year to US$842m but dropped by 19% to US$166m from its concrete division. Its overall earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) dropped by 6.8% to US$289m from US$310m. Net profit rose by 15.4% to US$131m from US$113m.

Vietnam: Vicem sold 29.4Mt of cement and clinker in 2021, in line with its sales volumes in 2020. Viet Nam News has reported that the company produced 24.1Mt of cement during the year, down by 2.1% year-on-year. Its sales were US$1.46bn, in line with 2020 sales.

Vietnamese domestic cement consumption fell by 5.2% year-on-year to 59Mt in 2021.
