Coronavirus controls drag on Siam City Cement sales in first half of 2021

Thailand: Siam City Cement says that coronavirus-related public health measures reduced demand for cement towards the end of the second quarter of 2021. The group noted that the domestic market for cement ‘softened’ despite strong sales overseas in Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Its overall net sales fell by 3.6% year-on-year to US$616m in the first half of 2021 from US$639m in the same period in 2020. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) dropped by 4.4% to US$142m from US$149m. It also reported reduced sales from its ready-mixed concrete and aggregate business lines due to the pandemic’s effects on construction markets and the related closures of construction worker camps.

Vietnamese government proposes increasing export tax on clinker

Vietnam: The Ministry of Finance has proposed increasing the export tariff for clinker to 10% from 5%. The ministry said that exports of cement and clinker were not sustainable as they use non-renewable resources, according to the Viet Nam News newspaper. It added that cement producers also benefit from low electricity prices. Customs data shows that the country exported nearly 33Mt of cement and clinker in 2020. 22Mt or 73% of this total consisted of clinker.

Vicem’s first-half cement and clinker sales grow in 2021

Vietnam: State-owned Vicem’s cement and clinker sales grew by 8% year-on-year to 12.7Mt in the first half of 2021. The Viet Nam News newspaper has reported that the company recorded cement and clinker production volumes of 14.8Mt, up by 7%. Its 2021 full-year production targets are 30Mt of cement and clinker sales, up by 5%, and production of 26Mt of cement, up by 8%, and 22Mt of clinker, up by 1%. The producer recorded sales of US$709m in the first half of 2021, up by 5%. Its profit before tax rose by 23% to US$54.4m.

Vietnamese cement exports rise in first half of 2021

Vietnam: The Vietnam National Cement Association (VNCA) has reported a 27% year-on-year rise in cement and clinker exports to 21.0Mt in the first half of 2021. The Viet Nam News newspaper has reported that the value of cement exports rose by 32% to US$812m. The growth was attributed to China’s environmental policies and the promotion of clinker imports.

Philippine Department of Trade and Industry launches new investigation into cement imports

Philippines: The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has launched a new investigation into imports of cement, currently subject to safeguarding tariffs of US$0.20/bag. The investigation follows a request by Cemex Philippines, Holcim Philippines and Republic Cement. The Viet Nam News newspaper has reported that the Vietnam National Cement Association has asked the DTI and the Philippine cement industry to consider whether imports from Vietnam did real damage. In 2020, Vietnam’s export cement prices fell by 15% year-on-year. Its excess production of cement was 36Mt during the year, and its clinker prices were 20% below the regional average.

Building Material Forum forecasts decline in Vietnamese cement exports with the end of China’s infrastructure stimulus package

Vietnam: The Building Material Forum has predicted that Vietnam’s cement export volume will undergo a 25 – 30% short and medium-term decline if the government of China suspends its stimulus package on infrastructure. The Viet Nam News newspaper has reported that China’s subsidisation of infrastructure and industrial construction totalled US$163bn in 2020, up by 34% year-on-year.

Vietnam increases first-half cement output in 2021

Vietnam: Vietnamese first-half cement production is estimated to have risen by 8% year-on-year to 51.1Mt in the first half of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020. The Viet Nam News newspaper has reported that June 2021 cement production was 10% higher than that in June 2020, at 9.1Mt. Vietnam’s full-year cement production in 2020 was 100Mt.

Vicem increases five-month cement sales in 2021

Vietnam: State-owned Vicem produced 10.5Mt of cement in the first five months of 2021, an increase of 9% year-on-year. Total cement and clinker sales rose in the period by 8% to 12.8Mt, according to the Viet Nam News newspaper. The company is targeting 26Mt-worth of cement production in 2021, up by 8% year-on-year.

Vietnam’s four-month cement exports increase by volume and value in 2021

01 June 2021

Vietnam: Vietnam’s cement exports totalled 14.9Mt in the first four months of 2021, up by 42% year-on-year from the levels in the corresponding period of 2020. China imported 7.38Mt (50%) of Vietnamese cement exports, up by 53% year-on-year. The Philippines imported 2.51Mt (17%), up by 17%, and Bangladesh imported 1.87Mt (13%), up by 38%.

The Viet Nam News newspaper has reported the total value of Vietnamese cement exports for the period as US$563m. China’s value of Vietnamese cement imports was US$258 (46%), the Philippines’ was US$112m (20%) and Bangladesh’s was US$63.1m (11%).

Vicem’s four-month cement production increases in 2021

Vietnam: Vicem recorded 9.72Mt of cement production in the first four months of 2021, up by 12% year-on-year from 8.67Mt in the first four months of 2021. The Viet Nam News newspaper has reported that the company is targeting 22.0Mt of cement in 2021, corresponding to a 1% rise year-on-year. Chair Bui Hong Minh said that the growth signals the success of Vicem’s coronavirus pandemic prevention measures at meeting their aim of maintained operational stability.
