Papua New Guinea: Mayur Resources has signed a collaboration agreement with First Graphene Limited for the production of low-carbon cement using the latter’s PureGraph graphene-based grinding aids and performance improvers. Mayur Resources operates a 0.9Mt/yr cement plant, where it also produces a further 0.75Mt/yr of clinker and 0.2Mt/yr of lime, near Port Moresby in National Capital District. The Australia-based partners hope to export their cement across Melanesia and to Polynesia and Australia.
Cementos Pacasmayo increases sales in 2021
21 February 2022Peru: Cementos Pacasmayo recorded full-year sales of US$519m in 2021, up by 49% year-on-year from US$348m in 2020. Sales exceeded pre-Covid levels of US$373m in 2019 by 39%. The company’s profit for the year was US$41m, more than double its profit of US$15.5m in 2020 and up by 16% from US$35.4m in 2019.
The Semana Económica newspaper has reported that Cementos Pacasmayo aims to maintain its 2021 full-year cement sales volumes in 2022. The company is in the process of a US$70m, 600,000t/yr clinker capacity expansion in order to increase its clinker capacity to 100% of its grinding capacity, from 61% currently. This will eliminate the producer’s reliance on clinker imports.
Algerian cement truckers protest loading law change
21 February 2022Algeria: Some cement truck drivers have launched protests against a change in the law which limits their vehicles’ loads below the previous maximum weight. The L’Expression newspaper reports that protests include refusals to depart and the establishment of roadblocks. The actions have prevented the export of some Algerian clinker. Lafarge Algérie said that it raised drivers’ pay per tonne of goods following the law change. The company stated that the new level of pay ensures that transporters will not lose out as a result.
Algeria is targeting cement and clinker exports of 10Mt in 2022.
Ambuja Cement to support Bhatapara cement plant upgrade with 7Mt/yr grinding capacity expansion
18 February 2022India: Ambuja Cement plans to invest US$469m in a 7Mt/yr expansion to its total grinding capacity. BusinessLine Online News has reported that the new capacity will consist of a new grinding plant at Barh, Bihar, and expansions to the company’s Farakka and Sankrail grinding plants in West Bengal. The company says that the new grinding capacity will become crucial after it completes its planned 3.2Mt/yr clinker capacity expansion to its Bhatapara cement plant in Chhattisgarh.
11-month US cement shipments rise in 2021
07 February 2022US: Total shipments of cement in the US in the first 11 months of 2021 were 99.2Mt, up by 4.1% year-on-year from 95.3Mt in the corresponding period of 2020. The country imported 15.2Mt of cement, up by 17% from 13Mt.
Domestic clinker production for the year totalled 72.2Mt, up by 0.4% from 71.9Mt.
Vicem Bút Son sells 3.2Mt of cement in 2021
07 February 2022Vietnam: Vicem Bút Son sold 3.2Mt of cement in 2021, 91% of the volume stipulated in its plan for the year. Its clinker sales were 2.8Mt, 96% of planned volumes. Viet Nam News has reported that the company is targeting a 14% increase in cement sales to 3.4Mt in 2022. Its clinker sales target is 600,000t.
Cemex and Synhelion produce clinker using solar heat
03 February 2022Spain: Cemex’s Mósteles clinker pilot batch production unit at IMDEA Energy Institute in Madrid Autonomous Community has produced its first batch of solar-heated clinker. The unit uses Switzerland-based Synhelion solar radiation technology. The technology uses a solar receiver and gaseous heat transfer fluid to heat raw materials.
Cemex chief executive officer Fernando Gonzalez said “The production of the first solar clinker is an exciting milestone for this transformational technology. It is proof of our commitment to deliver tangible outcomes through innovation to achieve our goal of delivering only net-zero CO2 concrete by 2050.” He concluded “Cemex is building a better future, and that future must be sustainable.”
Vicem But Son Cement contributes strongly in 2021
28 January 2022Vietnam: Vicem But Son Cement has reported that it sold more than 3.8Mt of cement and clinker in 2021, fulfilling 94.1% of its whole year’s target, according to local media. During the year, the firm produced more than 2.8Mt of clinker, fulfilling 96.6% of its plan and over 3.2Mt of cement, fulfilling 91.1% of its target. In financial terms, the company contributed US$6.64m to the state budget last year, surpassing the whole year’s target by 6.7%.
In 2022 Vicem But Son Cement aims to sell 4.0Mt of products, comprising 3.4Mt of cement and 0.6Mt of clinker, as part of its mission to become ‘a leading’ cement producer in Vietnam and in the Southeast Asian region.
Savannah Cement announces upcoming Kitui clinker plant
21 January 2022Kenya: Savannah Cement plans to build an 2.5Mt/yr clinker plant in Kitui, Kitui County. The Standard newspaper has reported that the company has announced a US$352m bond issuance in order to raise funds for the project.
Tangshan Jidong Cement predicts 2021 full-year profit drop
17 January 2022China: Tangshan Jidong Cement says that it expects its consolidated net profit to drop by up to 3.5% year-on-year to US$441m in 2021 from US$457m in 2021. Its full-year cement and clinker sales were 99.7Mt in 2021, down by 7% year-on-year.
