Analyst forecasts 100% profit growth in second quarter of 2021 financial year for UltraTech Cement
20 October 2020India: Motilal Oswal Securities predicts that Aditya Birla subsidiary UltraTech Cement’s second-quarter profit is likely to rise by 100% year-on-year in the 2021 financial year, which began on 1 April 2020, to US$161m from US$80.5m in the second quarter of the 2020 financial year. The Economic Times newspaper has reported that the analysts expect an increase in sales of 3.5% to US$1.36bn from US$1.31bn, an increase in cement volumes of 3.9% to 19.4Mt from 18.7Mt, a price drop and a fall in costs in the quarter, which ended on 30 September 2020. The analysts added that cement makers may show volume growth in the seasonally weak quarter due to pent-up demand as the economy has reopened following coronavirus-related disruption.

India: BK Birla Group subsidiary Mangalam Cement has launched Mangalam ProMaxX, a premium fly ash Portland pozzolana cement (PPC) that it says boasts “high one-day strength and also high 28-day ultimate strength.” The company says that the new cement is “an environmentally-friendly alternative with all the performance abilities of Mangalam Cement’s Birla Uttam cement.”
JK Cement completes Katni wall putty plant expansion
20 October 2020India: JK Cement has increased the capacity of its Katni wall putty plant in Madhya Pradesh to 700,000t/yr from 400,000t/yr. Projects Today News has reported that the putty consists mainly of JK Cement white cement. The company now has a wall putty production capacity of 1.2Mt/yr.
Dalmia Cement’s Calcom plant received fly ash from Uttar Pradesh
15 October 2020India: Dalmia Cement has imported 3830t of fly ash from a National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) power plant in Uttar Pradesh for use at its 0.8Mt/yr-capacity integrated Calcom cement plant in Assam. United News of India has reported that the supplementary cementitious material (SCM) travelled over 1000km.
62.9GW-total capacity NTPC produces 65Mt/yr of fly ash, some of which is used by ACC at its cement plants in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab.
Ramco Cement inaugurates grinding plant in Odisha
14 October 2020India: Naveen Patnaik, the chief minister of Odisha, has attended the inauguration of Ramco Cement’s new cement grinding plant at Haridaspur. The unit had a cost of just under US$100m and has created 105 direct jobs. A LM 46.2+2 CS type vertical roller mill with a capacity of 3750kW has ordered from Germany-based Loesche in 2018 for the project. The cement producer says that the plant is designed to be ‘totally dust free,’ including bag filters designed to ensure emission levels below 30mg/m3.
Odisha to invest US$1.2bn in infrastructure
13 October 2020India: The state of Odisha has announced a US$1.2bn infrastructure investment package aimed at “reviving the industrial economy, which has been impacted by the coronavirus outbreak.” National Business Media News has reported that the plans, encompassing “micro, small, medium and large scale” projects across sectors including cement and steel production, renewable energy and IT and will create “huge job generation avenues” and significantly increase cement demand.
State governor Ganeshi Lal said, “The new industrial units will provide an added impetus to the confidence of investors in the industrial sector.”
JK Cement launches 0.7Mt/yr Balasinor grinding plant
12 October 2020India: JK Cement has started grey cement production at its 0.7Mt/yr-capacity Balasinor grinding plant in Gujarat. Accord Fintech News has reported that the plant, which dispatched its first batch of cement on 10 October 2020, brings JK Cement’s total grey cement production capacity to 4.2Mt/yr.
India: The city corporation of Mysore, Karnataka and non-governmental organisation (NGO) Susthira have announced plans to set up a waste building materials recycling plant. The Projects Today newspaper has reported that the corporation has purchased a 20,000m2 site in the suburb of Kuppalur on which for Susthira to build and operate the plant, which will process waste cement slabs and concrete bricks from construction and demolition sites.
Shree Cement announces Chhattisgarh clinker unit plans
29 September 2020India: Shree Cement has announced that it plans to establish a US$135m clinker production unit in the state of Chhattisgarh. The company has said that the plant will become operational in mid-2022.
Dalmia Cement signs Near-Zero pledge
25 September 2020India: Dalmia Bharat subsidiary Dalmia Cement has joined five leading companies of other sectors in signing the Near-Zero pledge, an industry charter targeting “near-zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2050” at the virtual Climate Week NYC. The Times of India newspaper has reported that the pledge consists of a commitment to “undertake carbon sequestration efforts, if needed, and set reporting indicators and targets to enable tracking of corporate goals on the decarbonisation pathway.”
Dalmia Cement urged national governments to “positively enforce targets for efficiency, emissions reduction and circular economy to make carbon neutrality by 2050 a reality.”
