Titan Cement publishes integrated annual report
15 April 2020Greece: Titan Cement has published its integrated annual report for 2019, a year in which its net profit fell by 5.5% year-on-year to Euro50.9m from Euro53.8m in 2018 and sales rose by 8.0% to Euro1.61bn from Euro1.49bn. The company noted its ‘sustained performance and stronger cash flow generation’ throughout the year, with growing demand in the US and Southeastern Europe and the beginning of growth in Greece, in spite of a 7.0% year-on-year fall in cement volumes to 17.0Mt from 18.2Mt in 2018. Challenging conditions in Egypt and Turkey caused the group’s performance to deteriorate.
Titan Cement said that it is ‘on track to meet the Group’s 2020 sustainability targets and has already met ‘all targets related to emissions and water consumption.’ It acknowledged inevitable ‘short-term impacts’ of coronavirus, including reduced sales volumes ‘particularly and more severely in the second quarter of 2020,’ and has strengthened its liquidity position to Euro400m.
Arabian Cement’s profit and sales fall in 2019
15 April 2020Egypt: Arabian Cement has reported an 88% decline in profit year-on-year to Euro 1.60m in 2019 from Euro13.3m in 2018. Sales were Euro181m, down by 5.5% from Euro 192m in 2018 due to depleted demand. Expansión newspaper called 2019 ‘the worst year in history for Egypt’s cement industry.’
Chinese cement production rebounds
14 April 2020China: The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has published data showing 94% domestic cement production capacity utilisation in the two-week period ending 10 April 2020, marking an end to coronavirus shutdowns in all provinces. Excavator sales in March 2020 numbered 49,400, up by 12% year-on-year from 44,300 in March 2019. Construction materials analyst Xu Xianchun said, "Demand in the construction industry has basically recovered to 2019's level, driven by new and resumed projects." Xinhua News Agency has reported that cement prices have also climbed on a month-by-month basis.
Kazakhstan: Steppe Cement sold 236,000t of cement in the first three months of 2020, down by 11% year-on-year from 266,000t in first quarter of 2019. Its sales were US$9.36m, down by 10% from US$10.4m. Regulatory News Service has reported that Steppe Cement’s Kazakh cement market share decreased to 13% from 17% in the corresponding quarter of 2019.
Steppe Cement estimated that Kazakhstan's cement demand will decrease in 2020 due to the uncertainty of the oil market and the negative effects of coronavirus. It says that its 3.6Mt/yr integrated Karaganda plant continues to operate at 100% capacity.
Pakistan domestic cement sales fall by 17% in March 2020
06 April 2020Pakistan: Data from the All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) shows that local cement sales fell by 17% year-on-year to 3.2Mt in March 2020 from 3.9Mt in the same period of 2019 due to a contraction in construction activity, according to the News International newspaper. Exports rose by 5% to 0.51Mt but this is expected to fall as markets decline around the world due to the coronavirus outbreak. Both local sales and exports grew in the first two months of 2020.
The government has introduced an incentive package for the construction industry which is expected to help increase local cement consumption. The cement industry is also anticipating a reduction in federal excise duty, which it described as ‘very high’ regionally.
China Tianrui boosts profit by 50% year-on-year in 2019
02 April 2020China: China Tianrui Group’s net 2019 profit was US$256m, up by 50% year-on-year from US$171m. Sales rose by 20% to US$1.70bn from US$1.42bn. This was due to increased volumes and prices.
Brazil: Votorantim Cimentos earned revenues of US$2.47bn in 2019, up by 3.0% year-on-year from US$2.39bn in 2018. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation rose by 1.1% to US$513m from US$507m in 2018. Throughout the year, the company says that it paid off approximately US$570m of debt and contracted with a syndicate of banks for a new committed credit facility (CCF) for its alternative fuel substitution and CCF reduction initiatives of US$55.1m, due in August 2024.

Cemex shuts up shop in Panama and Colombia
26 March 2020Colombia/Panama: Mexico-based Cemex has announced the suspension of production at all of its plants in Panama and those of its Colombian subsidiary Cemex Latam Holdings from 25 March 2020. It said it ‘may resume certain activities on or before 13 April 2020,’ according to Noticias Financieras News. The NAFTA 2.0 newspaper has included Cemex on a list of Mexico’s companies most exposed due to a large European presence to the impacts of the coronavirus there. Europe is the second-largest market for Cemex’s products, generating 24% of its revenue in 2019.
Anhui Conch net profit rises by 13% year-on-year in 2019
24 March 2020China: Anhui Conch Cement recorded a net profit of US$4.77bn in 2019, 13% higher than its 2018 net profit of US$4.23bn in 2019. Revenues rose by 22% year-on-year to US$22.2bn from US$18.2bn in 2018.
Titan Group strengthens sales as profit drops
20 March 2020Greece: Titan Group’s profit dropped by 5.5% year-on-year to Euro50.9m in 2019, from Euro53.8m in 2018. The group said that it ‘demonstrated strength’ in ‘sustaining a growth performance’ despite challenges in Southeastern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Sales were Euro1.61bn, up by 8.0% from Euro1.49bn in 2018, led by Titan Group’s US subsidiary Titan America’s sales growth of 10.7%, to Euro952m from Euro860m. Titan Group’s Greece and Western Europe sales grew to Euro245m, up by 3.3% from Euro237m in 2018, with sales gains from the private sector offsetting the decreased revenue from delays in public infrastructure projects. Cement exports, especially to the US, were also a major regional sales contributor, while clinker exports fell.
Group volumes of cement, including clinker and cementitious materials, were 17.0Mt, down by 7% from 18.2Mt.
