Reconstruction work causing cement sales to rise in Puerto Rico
28 February 2019Puerto Rico: Road reconstruction work, housing and other infrastructure projects are raising cement sales. Over US$0.9bn of local and federal funding is being spent on rebuilding roads and around US$1.5bn has been approved for other projects, according to the El Vocero newspaper. Cement sales rose by 13.5% year-on-year to 1.2 million bags in December 2018.
Thai demand for cement forecast to grow in 2019
13 February 2019Thailand: Fitch Ratings forecasts that demand for cement will rise due to recovery in the private construction sector. It is expected to grow by over 5% in 2019, according to the Bangkok Post. Cement sales rose by 3.7% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2018, the first quarterly growth in 10 quarters. Data from the Office of Industrial Economics showed that this was followed by a rise of 2.8% in the fourth quarter of 2018.
The forecast said that local cement producers were expanding regionally due to domestic oversupply and a profitability gap between domestic sales and exports. Government infrastructure projects are expected to continue to drive sales, with nearly US$100bn planned on projects from 2018 to 2026.
Sumitomo Osaka’s sales up as export market suffers
08 February 2019Japan: Sumitomo Osaka’s sales have risen but national exports have fallen. The cement producer has starting promoting exports to counteract this trend. Its sales revenue rose by 4% year-on-year to US$1.71bn in the nine months to 31 December 2018 from US$1.65bn in the same period in 2017. Its operating profit fell by 27% to US$91.9m from US$125m. The company said that local cement demand grew by 1.3% to 32.5Mt in the reporting period. However, exports fell by 12.8%. Overall, national cement sales volumes decreased by 1.6% to 40.3Mt.
US/Canada: Terex says that its Terex Washing Systems (TWS) brand is investing in its North American sales and operational teams. Following the spend it will have 20 regional partners via 50 service depots, 60 mobile trucks and 100 technicians in the region.
“Our new enhanced levels of sales and service and support will build upon momentum gained in recent years as we continue to focus on serving customers, with world-class washing equipment solutions that add commercial value to their operations,” said TWS’ director Oliver Donnelly.
TWS manufactures products for the mineral washing sector for aggregate, recycling, mining and industrial sand industries.
Moroccan cement sales fall by 3.6% to 13.3Mt in 2018
21 January 2019Morocco: Data from the Ministry of Housing shows that cement sales fell by 3.6% year-on-year to 13.3Mt in 2018. This is the lowest level of consumption since 2007, according to Médias 24. Cement sales fell by 0.7% in 2016 and by 2.54% in 2017.
Argentine cement sales fall by 2.3% to 11.8Mt in 2018
15 January 2019Argentina: Local cement despatches fell by 2.3% year-on-year to 11.8Mt in 2018 from 12.1Mt in 2017. Despatches in December 2018 fell by 17.9% to 0.82Mt from 1Mt in December 2017. Data from the Asociación de Fabricantes de Cemento Portland (AFCP) also showed that exports rose by 10% to 81,191t from 79,173t.
Peruvian cement sales rise by 3.2% to 11.1Mt in 2018
15 January 2019Peru: Local cement despatches rose by 3.2% year-on-year to 11.1Mt in 2018 from 10.8Mt in 2017. Consumption rose by 3.7% to 11.2Mt from 10.8Mt. Data from the Asociación de Productores de Cemento (Asocem) showed that cement exports fell by 26% to 0.27Mt from 0.36Mt. Imports increased by 60% to 0.98Mt from 0.61Mt. Clinker exports rose by 63% to 0.9Mt and imports rose by 49% to 0.78Mt. 85% of cement imports came from Vietnam. 33% of clinker imports came from South Korea and 31% came from Vietnam.
SNIC forecasts 3% growth in 2019
10 January 2019Brazil: Paulo Camillo, the president of SNIC, forecasts that cement sales will rise by 3% in 2019. If he is correct then it will be the first rise in four years for the local industry. Total cement sales fell by 1.1% year-on-year to 52.8Mt in 2018 from 53.4Mt in 2017. Particular falls in sales were noted in the north and northeast of the country, although exports rose by 14.3% to 88,000t. A truck drivers strike and general economic uncertainty reduced the effects of a positive first half to the year. The cement association also said that freight, fuels and electricity costs grew ‘significantly’ in 2018. However, it is optimistic that new legislation support co-processing of alternative fuels will partly help to alleviate this situation.
Semen Baturaja sales volumes rise by 24% to 2.17Mt in 2018
07 January 2019Indonesia: Semen Baturaja’s cement sales volumes rose by 24% year-on-year to 2.17Mt in 2018 from 1.76Mt in 2017. President Director Jobi Triananda Hasjim said that the growth was 5% greater than the industry’s average in 2018, according to the Antara news agency. Data from the Indonesian Cement Association shows that in November 2018 Semen Baturaja had a market share of 54% in South Sumatra, 26% in Lampung,14% in Jambi, 8% in Bengkulu and 5% in Bangka Belitung.
Pakistan cement sales fall by 1.41% to 19.6Mt in first half
07 January 2019Pakistan: Local cement sales fell by 1.41% year-on-year to 19.6Mt in the first half of the reporting year to December 2018. The decline, the first in nine years, has been blamed in a cut in development spending, according to the News International newspaper. The All Pakistan Cement Manufacturers Association (APCMA) said that the decline in domestic cement consumption was more pronounced in the northern region where most of the country’s production capacity is based. Cement sales fell by 5.95% to 15.5Mt in the north but they increased by 20.7% to 4.1Mt in the south. Despite this, exports rose by 48% to 3.6Mt, supported by plants in the south.
