Lafarge to invest US$1.37bn in Nigeria expansion
03 March 2014Nigeria: Lafarge WAPCO intends to double its cement production capacity in Nigeria to 16Mt/yr with an investment of US$1.37bn by 2018. The proposed investment will enable Lafarge to complete the expansion of its cement plant in Calabar and the Ashaka Cement plant.
"Between 2009 and 2012 we invested over US$1.37bn in our operations," said Country Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nigeria and Benin Republic, Guillaume Roux. He added that the expansion plan is in support of Nigeria's backward integration policy in cement production.
On a separate issue, Roux stated that a recent spate of building collapses was not caused by poor quality cement. He blamed the collapses on structural designs and poor usage of building materials by project handlers. He denied the existence of substandard cement in Nigeria, stating that "in Lafarge we put the control of the quality of cement at the forefront of our operation because we want to deliver very good quality products and services."

A Gebr. Pfeiffer MVR 6000 R-6 will be installed in a complete new line at the plant, replacing two existing raw material mills. The scope of supply will also includes a 5600kW motor, engineering, supply and related services. Commissioning for this project is planned for the middle of 2016.
KHD to upgrade Holcim’s Hagerstown cement plant
20 November 2013US: KHD Humboldt Wedag International AG's Americas Customer Service Centre has signed a contract with Holcim (US) for engineering, delivery of equipment, and site services to modify the existing production line at its Hagerstown, Maryland cement plant. The contract, which includes a KHD designed PyroProcessing System, will increase the line's production rate to 2400t/day and be compliant with the new NESHAP environmental regulations.
The project incorporates constructing a five-stage single-string KHD LowNOx Preheater over the existing kiln, while the kiln is in operation. Additionally, KHD will modify the existing six-pier rotary kiln to a two-pier kiln and add a new KHD PYROFLOOR clinker cooler. The existing kiln will be cut to achieve a final length of 51m, transforming the existing long dry kiln system into a new, modern, energy efficient, fuel efficient, and environmentally friendly PyroProcessing system. The new system will be supplied with a new whole tire handling system and will be capable of co-processing up to approximately 7% of whole tires as an alternative fuel.
To reduce SOx emissions KHD will supply a dry lime injection system. To reduce NOx emissions KHD will supply PYROJET LowNOx burners, a PYROCLON® Low NOX calciner with PYROLOOP® and a modification of the existing SNCR system. New dust collectors will be supplied to meet stringent particulate emissions requirements.
KHD's scope of supply for the project starts with a modification to the raw material feed system and ends with the clinker handling system into the existing clinker storage hall. The scope consists of all electrical and auxiliary equipment, a new raw material grinding VRM system, coal dosing systems, as well as civil and structural engineering and the supply of structural steel.
Commissioning of this new system is planned for mid-2016.

Novorostsement orders 12th gas engine from GE
31 October 2013Russia: Novorostsement has ordered its 12th Jenbacher J624 gas engine from US multinational GE (General Electric). The south-western 2.3Mt/yr Russian cement plant in Novorossiysk is expanding its 33.3MW captive gas power plant.
"In order to increase production capacity, we chose GE's technology since we have already had a successful operating experience with the J624 gas engines. The use of GE's gas engines has allowed us to improve the economic performance of our facility," said Anatoly Ziskel, managing director of the JSC Verhnebakanskiy Cement Plant.
Novorostsement originally installed 11 of GE's 4-MW Jenbacher J624 units in 2011. At the time, the project marked the largest single order of Jenbacher gas engines in Russia and also represents GE's largest J624 power plant project worldwide. Max Motors LLC of Sochi will supply the latest J624 unit for the power plant, which Max Motors designed, built and maintains. The on-site power station uses natural gas provided by a local pipeline.
