Lithuania: The Lithuanian Competition Council has permitted Germany-based Schwenk Zement to increase its stake in Akmenes Cement to 97% from 47%. The markets authority also granted permission for Schwenk Zement’s 75% acquisition of limestone and clay producer Kalcitas and 100% acquisitions of building materials suppliers Cemeka and Lanku Bokstai.
Karnataka government approves Shree Cement’s Doddaballapur grinding and bagging plant plans
13 May 2021India: Shree Cement has received approval from the state government of Karnataka for its planned US$81.5m Doddaballapur cement grinding and bagging plant. The Hindu newspaper has reported that, when operational, the plant will employ 300 local people.
Punjab government approves five cement plant plans
09 December 2020Pakistan: The government of Punjab Province has approved five cement plant plans worth a total of US$1.25bn. The Frontier Post newspaper has reported that Chief Minister Usman Buzdar chaired a cabinet meeting in which No Objection Certificates (NOCs) were issued to five planned cement plant projects.
Dyckerhoff receives approval for use of CEM II / CM (S-LL)
20 November 2020Germany: Buzzi Unicem subsidiary Dyckerhoff has received general building inspection approval from the German Institute for Building Technology for the Portland composite cement CEM II / CM (S-LL) produced in the Amöneburg and Deuna factories. It is the first to receive approval to sell this class of cement, which contains both slag and limestone, in Germany.
The use of CEM II / C cements reduces CO2 emissions from building with cement and concrete due to their lower clinker factor. CEM II / CM (S-LL) emits 39% less CO2 per tonne of cement compared to CEM I cement. Compared to the current status quo of the binder mix, CEM II / C cements have the potential to reduce CO2 intensity by 25%.
The CEM II / CM (S-LL) ‘Amöneburg’ and ‘Deuna’ is authorised for use in strength classes 32.5 N, 32.5 R, 42.5 N, 42.5 R, 52.5 N and 52.5 R. It may be used for the production of concrete, reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete in the following exposure classes: X0, XC1 to XC4, XD1 to XD3, XS1 to XS3, XF1, XA1 to XA3, XM1 to XM3.
Nepal: The Investment Board Nepal has granted approval to Samrat Cement and Dang Cement for cement production at their upcoming integrated cement plants. New Business Age has reported that Samrat Cement will begin production at its 1.3Mt/yr cement plant in Dang Region in December 2020, and plans to increase the plant’s capacity to 1.6Mt/yr after a total investment of US$132m. Dang Cement’s 2.0Mt/yr cement plant, also in Dang region, is due for commissioning in late 2023 at a total investment cost of US$277m.
Samrat Cement Chair Mukunda Timilsina said, “We have brought modern machineries with German technology and skilled manpower is coming from India for this purpose.” He added that the plant will directly employ 500 local people and supply cement throughout western Nepal.
Egyptian Financial Regulatory Authority approves Suez Cement’s Tourah Portland Cement acquisition
19 October 2020Egypt: The Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA) has approved HeidelbergCement and Simon France subsidiary Suez Cement’s mandatory tender offer (MTO) for acquisition of a 100% stake in Egyptian Tourah Portland Cement for US$32.7m. Daily News Egypt has reported that the FRA also approved a change to Suez Cement’s ownership, with HeidelbergCement France acquiring a 33% stake in the company.
Cemtech Materials secures bauxite residue supply from Noranda Alumina
15 September 2020US: Cemtech Materials will produce cement using bauxite residue supplied under a new contract signed with New Day Aluminium Holdings subsidiary Noranda Alumina. Noranda Alumina has executed a letter of intent with Cemtech to sell it 60,000t of bauxite residue starting in the fourth quarter of 2020. The bauxite will be used in the cement production process as the raw material for iron, replacing other current iron bearing raw materials.
Noranda Alumina chair and chief executive officer (CEO) David D’Addario said, “We are focused on continuously improving the sustainability of our business and reducing our environmental footprint on our path to a zero residue refinery, and look forward to helping our partners in the cement industry to achieve their aligned goals.”
The deal follows a beneficial use approval from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. Noranda Alumina is located in Gramercy, Louisiana. It produces smelter grade alumina for the production of aluminium and chemical grade alumina for non-metallurgical applications.
Uttar Pradesh government approves three grinding plant plans
08 September 2020India: The state government of Uttar Pradesh has granted approval to three planned grinding plant projects with a total value of US$115m. The Hindustan Times newspaper has reported that Kanodia Cement ’s Amethi grinding plant will cost US$39.6m, Eco Plus Cement Industries’ Prayagraj grinding plant will cost US$38.6m and Eco Plus Cement Industries’ Mirzapur grinding plant will cost US$37.1m.
India: The Odisha State Level Single Window Clearance Authority (SLSWCA) has approved two cement and slag grinding plant projects in Odisha. It has granted JSW Cement permission for an upgrade to its upcoming 1.2Mt/yr Kalinga Nagar, Odisha slag cement grinding plant that will increase the finished plant’s capacity to 2.4Mt/yr at an additional investment cost of US$359,000. JSW Cement restarted work on the facility, which will grind Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), in September 2018 after suspending the project due to leasing issues in 2016.
Sagar Cements subsidiary Jajpur Cements has also received clearance from the SLSWCA for the construction of a 1.5Mt/yr grinding plant on the site of the existing 0.5Mt/yr Jajpur Cements grinding plant in the Kalinga Nagar Industrial Complex in Jajpur District, Odisha. The project, valued by the company at US$44m, is scheduled for completion in March 2021. Sagar Cements acquired Jajpur Cements on 7 May 2019 for US$16m.
US: The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (CEQ) has granted permission to Lhoist North America for the installation of a new vertical kiln at its New Braunfels, Texas plant. The company says that the kiln will form the basis for a plant expansion to meet the growing lime demand of the construction and steel sectors.
Lhoist North America chief executive officer (CEO) and president Ron Thompson said, "We are proud that this investment at New Braunfels aligns with our company's commitment to environmentally sustainable growth."
