Europe: Cementir Group launched D-Carb, a 15% reduced-CO₂ white cement, in Europe on 24 April 2024. The producer says that D-Carb cement maintains the early-age performance of its Aalborg White high early strength white cement, while helping builders to conform to the highest sustainability certifications. D-Carb cement achieves its emissions reduction without diminishing the product’s brightness. Following this, Cementir Group plans to roll out D-Carb cement across its global markets.
Group product development manager Stefano Zampaletta said "Performance and the white colour are key features of D-Carb, and exploring suitable raw materials and their combinations have been crucial in the product assessment. This has resulted in the accurate selection of pure, very light limestone from a stable source, which improves and stabilises the whiteness. Additionally, leveraging limestone fineness and particle size distribution, D-Carb ensures enhanced and consistent rheology, ideal for wet-cast applications, such as self-compacting concrete. These distinctive rheological properties allow for concrete finishes that resemble marble surfaces. Moreover, the enhanced synergy and compatibility between cement and admixture cater to a wide range of white cement applications."
Chief sales, marketing and commercial development officer Michele Di Marino said "We are thrilled to introduce D-Carb, our new umbrella brand for lower carbon cements, as part of Cementir Group’s ongoing commitment to address environmental challenges and climate change. Australia: Cement Australia has received a US$34.4m federal grant for a kiln upgrade to its Railton cement plant in Tasmania. The upgrade will allow the plant to raise its alternative fuels substitution rate. The project is funded by the government’s Powering the Regions initiative, with total investments valued at US$215m.
Australian Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen said “This US$215m investment in Australia’s hard-to-abate manufacturing and mining facilities is about securing the future of high-quality, low-emissions products made right here. Northern Tasmania, Central Queensland and Western Australia have been industrial powerhouses for generations, and the government is ensuring that continues. As global markets change rapidly, we’re supporting Australian industry to not only survive but thrive with our world-class products that support regional jobs across the country.”
Türkiye: Exports of cement products from Türkiye to the US have decreased by 12% year-on-year to US$165m from January - March 2024, according to the Türkiye Trade Ministry. The ministry also reported that in March 2024, cement exports to the US fell to US$57.5m, representing a 28% year-on-year decrease. Overall, Türkiye's global cement product exports dropped 7.4% to US$1.1bn in the first quarter of 2024. In March 2024, exports were down 11% at US$390m. Despite these declines, Türkiye achieved cement product exports totalling US$4.5bn from March 2023 - March 2024.
World: Investment firm Insight Partners has forecast a composite annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.3% in the global green cement and concrete market between 2023 and 2030. This will result in a total value of US$990m in 2030, compared to US$806m in 2023. Regionally, the firm expects the sharpest growth in South and Central America, with a CAGR of 10% to US$7.9m in 2030. North America is expected to grow at a rate of 5.4% annually, to US$190m, followed by Europe, at 4.5% to US$226m, Middle East and Africa, at 2.9% to US$13m, and Asia-Pacific, at 1.4% to US$553m. In 2023, Asia-Pacific commanded a 61% share of the global market. Europe’s share was 20% and that of North America was 16%.
Transcargo International to build cement terminal at Arish port 01 December 2023
Egypt: Abu Dhabi Ports Group subsidiary Transcargo International (TCI) is building a bulk cement terminal at Arish port in North Sinai Governorate. The company says that the facility will be equipped with six 10,000t cement silos. Four silos will store up to 40,000t of grey cement, while two will store up to 20,000t/yr of white cement. Cementir Holding subsidiary Sinai White Portland Cement has signed a cooperation agreement with TCI to use the Arish cement terminal. TCI says that the terminal will serve multiple markets worldwide and help Sinai White Portland Cement to raise its total export volumes, thereby also raising its competitiveness.
TCI’s CEO Mohamed El Ahwal said "This project aligns with our commitment to support Egyptian exports by providing specialised logistics solutions across several industries. Building and operating Egypt’s first bulk cement terminal, we anticipate cost savings for cement producers in Egypt, making prices more competitive globally and increasing global market penetration."
Germany: Lubrication supplier Fuchs has embarked on a global marketing campaign to grow its brand awareness. The ‘Moving Your World’ initiative is using out-of-home advertising at 12 international airports in five continents to increase visibility for the company. Earlier in the year the company changed its name from Fuchs Petrolub to Fuchs as part of the same process. The company is also targeting new products and services at electric vehicles, digitalisation and sustainability as parts of its Fuchs2025 future business strategy.
Tina Vogel, Vice President Corporate Marketing and Communications at Fuchs, commented "We're on the road to establishing a strong global brand. On this journey, we're placing great emphasis on establishing long-term partnerships and a brand that also reflects the trust people are placing in us. Thang Thang Cement despatches cement to Central America 23 March 2023
Vietnam: Thang Thang Cement has despatched a shipment of 55,000t of cement produced at its Ha Nam cement plant to a customer in Central America. Vietnam Investment Review News has reported that Lotus Cement and Commodities Trading Corporation shipped the order from Ho Chi Minh City.
Vietnamese cement producers are reportedly seeking new trade partners due to 'lingering headwinds' in the domestic and global markets.
Huaxin Cement to acquire Oman Cement 14 March 2023
Oman: China-based Huaxin Cement has concluded a share purchase agreement with Omani sovereign wealth fund Oman Investment Authority (OIA) for the acquisition of a 60% stake in Oman Cement. ASDQ Financial News has reported the value of the deal as US$193m.
OIA director general of private ownership Ibrahim bin Said al Eisari said "This exit comes in accordance with a plan pursued by OIA aimed at achieving a number of goals, including attracting foreign investment to the sultanate. This will contribute to the development of operations at Oman Cement, increase the efficiency of its production lines and enhance its competitiveness locally and regionally, in addition to enhancing the positive image of the Omani industrial sector in general."
Vietnamese cement capacity to rise by 8% in 2022 20 May 2022
Vietnam: Three new integrated cement lines are expected to raise Vietnam’s total installed cement capacity by 8% to 115.4Mt/yr in 2022, from 106.6Mt/yr at the beginning of the year. VNDirect Securities has calculated that the upcoming lines – Dai Duong 1, Long Thanh and Xuan Thanh 3 – have a total capacity of 8.8Mt/yr. They are situated in Northern Vietnam’s Ha Nam Province and Central Vietnam’s Thanh Hoa Province, both of which already have cement overcapacity.
Viet Nam News has reported that Vietnam exported 4.31Mt of cement and clinker in April 2022, down by 7.6% month-on-month. The products’ total value was US$171m, down by 2.9% month-on-month.
Denmark: GE Renewable Energy has invested in a minority stake in COBOD International. The companies said that the investment will build on their existing relationship since 2019. GE Renewable Energy chose COBOD International as the global market leader in 3D printing technology, which experienced double-digit growth in 2020.
GE Renewable Energy advanced manufacturing technology leader Matteo Bellucci said “This agreement, which will further strengthen our ability to use COBOD’s 3D printing technology and competences in the renewable energy space, is another sign of our commitment to help drive the energy transition by investing in technology that promotes a more sustainable, circular design strategy and helps to create local jobs.” He continued “Since we started cooperating with COBOD, the company has continued to improve their technical competence and innovative solutions, reinforcing the benefits of solidifying the relationship between our companies.”
