Cementos Andino Dominicanos responds to ‘malicious media campaign’

Dominican Republic: Cementos Andino Dominicanos (CAD) has denied that it is planning to suspend work at its Pedernales factory after what the firm called 'a malicious media campaign.' Local reports claimed that CAD would stop production, hindering the construction of government-led tourism projects in one of Dominican Republic's most impoverished regions.

In response CAD underlined its commitment to help develop the area, where it invested US$150m to build the plant in 2002. The firm added that the facility had generated US$46.8m in cement exports and US$44m in exported added-value products since its opening.

Cemex plans to invest US$6m to boost production

Dominican Republic: According to Esmerk Latin American News, Cemex Dominicana plans to invest US$5.96m to expand the packaging and palletising capacity at its plant in San Pedro de Macoris. The investment includes a new cement packaging line that will increase its capacity by an additional 1.5m bags per month, reaching a capacity of 2.4Mt/yr. Cemex also intends to expand its cement milling capacity over the next few months and build a new facility for cement loading.

Cementos Andino Dominicanos suspends 170 staff

Dominican Republic: Cementos Andino Dominicanos has temporarily suspended around 170 workers. Company executives have said that the decision was made to save financial resources and use them instead to speed up completion of its new clinker plant.

Cemex opens 1.5MW solar plant in San Pedro de Macoris

Dominican Republic: Cemex has launched operations at a 1.5MW solar energy complex in the Dominican Republic in line with its commitment to sustainability. The facility will supply 2.2MkWhr/yr of energy to Cemex's cement plant in San Pedro de Macoris. It features 5040 panels with high-tech inverters. It is the first solar power plant owned by Cemex in the Caribbean. The company aims to continue to invest in sustainable energy solutions, such as marine and wind power.

Cemex to invest US$22.8m in the Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic: Cemex is carrying out investments of US$22.8m in the Dominican Republic. They include US$18.4m of improvements to its San Pedro de Macoris cement plant and US$4.35m for various activities to strengthen the business. Among the investments will be a waste heat recovery (WHR) system to generate 7MW of electricity, improvements in the calcination system to cut Cemex's carbon footprint, purchases of equipment to increase bagging efficiency by 30% and more trucks to make its concrete mixer fleet the largest of its Caribbean operations at 110 units. Cemex is also involved in housing projects to ease the country's shortage.

Cemento Panamericano opens US$80m cement plant at San Pedro

Dominican Republic: President Danilo Medina has inaugurated the Cemento Panamericano (PANAM) plant at Villa Gautier, San Pedro in the Dominican Republic. PANAM executive Manuel Estrella said that the US$80m plant will create 800 direct and 2400 indirect jobs. The PANAM cement plant will increase Dominican domestic cement production capacity to nearly 7Mt/yr.

Carlos Gonzalez sworn in as president of Dominican Association of Cement Producers

26 June 2013

Dominican Republic: The Dominican Association of Cement Producers (Adocem) swore in Carlos Gonzalez as its president for 2013 – 2014. Gonzalez, who is also president of Cemex in the country, joins Gabriel Ballestas of Cementos Argos as treasurer and Jose Caceres of Cementos Cibao as secretary.
