India: Konark Cement, a subsidiary of OCL India, is building a 1.35Mt/yr grinding plant at Salboni in West Bengal. The cement producer is also intending to use laminated polypropylene (LPP) bags at the unit to minimise wastage.

At present Konark Cement produces seven varieties of cement; OPC 53 grade, OPC 53-S grade, OPC 43 Grade, PSC, PPC (Flyash based), SRPC and masonry Cement, according to OCL India deputy executive director Indrajit Chatterji. OCL India has two cement plants at Kapilash and Rajgangpur in Orissa with a combined production capacity of 5.35Mt/yr.

Portugal: Cimpor intends to increase its cement production capacity in Mozambique to 2.4Mt/yr after a new grinding unit is put on stream, the company has said in a statement.

The new unit at the plant in Dondo, in southern Mozambique, has a production capacity of 60t/hr. The unit will double the Dondo plant capacity and will add almost 0.5Mt/yr to Cimpor's overall cement output in the country. Tests at the new grinding unit began on 27 August 2013. Works for optimisation of the capacity and reduction of electricity consumption will be carried out in October 2013.

In July 2013 Cimpor signed a contract to rent a cement grinding plant close to its Matola cement plant.

India: Mangalam Cement has started a trial run of a new 1.25Mt/yr grinding plant. In addition the Indian cement producer announced to the Bombay Stock Exchange that the kiln at its plant in Morak in Rajasthan had commenced operation after a break for renovation since May 2013. The cement plant's clinker production capacity has now risen to 2.21Mt/yr from 1.71Mt/yr.

India: ACC will set up a 1.5Mt/yr cement grinding plant in Kharagpur in West Midnapore district, its Chief Executive (East) Vivek Chawla has announced. Building of the US$88.4m project is planned to start by January 2014.

"The company will invest US$88.4m for setting up the 1.5Mt/yr factory at Kharagpur," said Chawla.

India: Kesoram Industries, a BK Birla Group company, has committed US$38.7m towards setting up a grinding unit at Sholapur, Maharashtra.

The first phase of the new 1.5Mt/yr grinding unit would be completed in the next 20 months, according to Kesoram's CEO Arvind Kumar Singh. When completed, the plant will be its first standalone grinding unit outside its main production bases in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.

Mozambique: Portuguese cement producer Cimpor intends to increase its grinding capacity in Mozambique by 220,000t/yr. Cimpor's local subsidiary Cimentos Mozambique has signed an agreement to lease a grinding plant near to its Matola cement plant. The agreement will also allow Cimpor to increase its product range.

India: HeidelbergCement India will sell its 0.6Mt/yr cement grinding unit in Raigad, Maharashtra, to JSW Ispat Steel, part of the JSW Group.

"The disposal is in line with HeidelbergCement's philosophy of divesting less strategic assets with lower margins to focus on more strategic and key operations in central India where the company had recently expanded its cement capacity from 2Mt/yr to 5Mt/yr," said Ashish Guha, chief executive and managing director of HeidelbergCement India, in a statement.

The parties are negotiating and finalising the terms of the business transfer agreement, HeidelbergCement India said in a regulatory filing. The transaction will be finalised only after obtaining all relevant approvals, including that of shareholders.

Sri Lanka: Pakistan's Thatta Cement is proceeding towards the construction of a US$15m grinding plant in Sri Lanka after signing a 25-year lease agreement with the island's port agency in the week ending 5 April 2013.

The plant, with a capacity of 0.3Mt/yr, will be located at the Hambantota port in the southern Sri Lankan region of Hambantota District. It is expected to grind 0.1Mt of cement in the first year, catering to the domestic market. It will gradually increase its output to 0.3Mt/yr. A second stage expansion is expected to take capacity up to 1Mt/yr.

"The team at Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) were all supportive," said Thatta's chief financial officer, Muhamad Taha Hamdani. "At the last meeting with SLPA chairman, he was very supportive. There was a certain issue (but this) was solved within 15 to 20 minutes."

Thatta Cement chief executive Fazlullah Shariff said the firm had been exporting more than 0.1Mt/yr of cement to Sri Lanka since 2011 and that the firm had acceptance among constructors in the country. He said the grinding plant would not be limited to clinker from Pakistan but would also accept clinker from other countries depending on the international movement of prices.

India: Grace Construction Products, an operating segment of W R Grace & Company has started manufacturing from a new facility near Delhi, India. Development at the site, which manufactures cement additives as well as concrete admixtures that are sold to cement producers in northern India, is part of Grace's ongoing growth strategy to invest in emerging regions.

Grace's cement additives help cement producers to improve grinding efficiency and overall cement quality, helping to build stronger structures in more energy-efficient ways, which helps to reduce manufacturing costs. In the past India has had issues with sub-standard cement and concrete products, including the much-publicised collapse of a bridge in New Delhi at the Commonwealth Games site in 2010.

The new facility is the most recent addition in a series of emerging market investments in the construction industry for Grace. The company has opened similar facilities in China, Colombia, Panama, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam since 2010.

"We continue to invest in emerging economies in order to meet our customers' needs," said Andrew Bonham, President of Grace Construction Products. "The new facility will allow us to enhance service and delivery times to our customers in Northern India."

The manager at the new plant, Ajay Kapoor said, "Our number one priority is to provide a safe environment and safe practices at the site. We must ensure our company culture extends throughout all our facilities from safety to product quality to community outreach."
