Schwenk Zement to partner with Orcan Energy for ORC technology
23 October 2024Germany: Schwenk Zement will utilise Germany-based Orcan Energy's organic Rankine cycle (ORC) technology at its Allmendingen cement plant in Baden-Württemberg. The installation of five ORC modules aims to harness residual heat from the clinker cooling process to generate electricity, saving 8.5GWh/yr. Orcan Energy expects operations to begin in the first quarter of 2025. The company has previously worked with Dyckerhoff and Cemex.
Cemex and Orcan Energy extend waste heat recovery partnership
15 February 2024Mexico/Germany: Cemex and waste heat recovery (WHR) systems developer Orcan Energy plan to scale up WHR technologies supplied by Orcan Energy at multiple Cemex sites globally. This new multi-site portfolio approach extends an existing partnership, through which the companies trialled Orcan’s systems for electricity generation at Cemex Deutschland’s Rüdersdorf cement plant in Germany.
Cemex’s Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia regional president Sergio Menéndez said “We already have an initial collaboration with Orcan. Based on the modularity of their solution, Orcan offers the flexibility of both installation and contracts. Thanks to this crucial flexibility, we can adapt to any upcoming changes in our plants. The approach enables us to reduce carbon emissions right now without limiting ourselves in implementing any future technologies such as carbon capture, utilisation and storage. This partnership will help us achieve our sustainability targets and contribute to our aim to use all available heat.”
Orcan Energy’s chief executive officer Andreas Sichert said “We are looking forward to entering this large-scale decarbonisation partnership with Cemex after our initial cooperation in Germany. This step is a testament to Cemex’s forward-looking strategy and the company’s commitment to achieving net zero. For Orcan Energy, this is another milestone in scaling the business internationally with global enterprises. We are proud to be the partner of choice for the cement industry. Our large footprint across the industry shows the economic capability and the technical excellence of our modular and flexible solution, especially in view of uncertain future economic and regulative developments.”
Germany: Orcan Energy has expanded its Kiel plant in order to produce its waste heat recovery (WHR) systems entirely on-site. The expansion aims to meet increased global demand, in line with Orcan Energy's strategy to help reduce CO2 emissions from cement and other industries.
Orcan Energy CEO Andreas Sichert said "The decision to expand our in-house production capacity in Kiel reflects our commitment to growth and innovation in Germany. With roots in Munich and a range of global projects, we can promote sustainable change around the world from Germany. I look forward to working together with my colleagues in Kiel to contribute to a profitable and sustainable energy future."
Titan partners with Orcan Energy for waste heat recovery collaboration
27 September 2023Greece/Germany: Greece-based cement producer Titan Group and Germany-based Orcan Energy have entered a partnership to explore the development and deployment of Orcan’s innovative modular waste heat recovery (WHR) solutions across Titan’s international cement production base. Orcan’s solution converts cement process waste heat into electricity that it says can accelerate decarbonisation while reducing operational costs. As a first step, the partners will undertake an assessment of where Orcan Energy's WHR systems can be applied across Titan's facilities. The study will encompass a thorough pilot site evaluation, starting at several plants within the group. The initial focus will be on recovering waste heat from pre-heaters and clinker coolers.
Samir Cairae, Chief Technology Officer at Titan said “The collaboration with our waste heat recovery partner Orcan Energy has the potential to transform waste heat into zero-carbon clean energy, with a novel but well-proven modular approach."
Andreas Sichert, chief executive officer at Orcan Energy, said “We are thrilled to partner with Titan to use its vast and valuable waste heat resources. Our technology will help not only to reach the group’s extraordinary decarbonisation ambitions but also to significantly save electricity expenses. Our modular approach will allow Titan to flexibly respond to outside changes in uncertain times.”

Cemex Zement appoints Orcan Energy for waste heat recovery system installation at Rüdersdorf cement plant
23 November 2021Germany: Cemex Zement has partnered with sustainable technology supplier Orcan Energy for the establishment of a waste heat recovery (WHR) plant at its Rüdersdorf, Brandenburg, cement plant. Orcan Energy will supply six generator modules for the installation. When commissioned in mid-2022, the WHR plant will cover part of the plant’s energy consumption. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy contributed 50% of funds for the project.
Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia regional president Sergio Menendez said “Efforts to achieve carbon neutrality at our Rüdersdorf cement plant by 2030 continue apace, and this project to install a WHR system is the latest significant milestone in our journey. It further demonstrates the value of forming expert alliances to investigate and then implement innovative technologies that will ensure the decarbonisation of our operation.”
