Holcim Azerbaijan launches Unkial cement product
08 April 2019Azerbaijan: Holcim Azerbaijan has launched Unkial, a cement product offering water resistant properties in the concrete it makes. The product is being targeted for general usage, according to the Turan Information Agency. Production of the new product will meet local demand.
Cimencam inaugurates Nomayos cement grinding plant
04 April 2019Cameroon: Cimencam has inaugurated its 0.5Mt/yr Nomayos cement grinding plant. The company also launched a new logo, according to the Ecofin Agency. The new unit will manufacture the company’s MultiX CEM II 32.5 R Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and its Sublime white cement products.
The subsidiary of LafargeHolcim is planning to regain lost market share in the country since Dangote Cement started operating locally. It is planning to build a new kiln at its Figuil integrated plant in Garoua, which is due for commissioning in 2020.
Germany: Siemens is presenting new products from its Digital Enterprise portfolio for process industries at the Hannover Messe trade fair. These include new versions of its Comos computer-aided engineering (CAE), XHQ Operations Intelligence and its PCS 7 Plant Automation Accelerator software products. The latest version of Comos includes a portal to help users choose components from a range of manufacturers. The new version of XHQ Operations Intelligence includes better access to remote data and simplified integration of engineering data. The update to PCS 7 Plant Automation Accelerator includes increased system openness based on GSDML and NE150 standards.
Siemens launches Simogear Reluctance Geared Motor
28 March 2019Germany: Siemens is extending its Simogear portfolio with a new synchronous-reluctance drive system consisting of Simogear standard gear unit, Simotics reluctance motor and a Sinamics frequency converter for controlling speed. The product has an output range of 0.55 – 4kW and is available for Sinamics G110M, G120D, G120 and S120 converters.
The engineering company says that its efficiency class is comparable to IE4 and it is offers advantages in comparison to asynchronous motors when operating under partial load due to its greater efficiency and lower losses. In addition, the drive system is characterised by high dynamics due to the low moment of inertia and optimised control. An external fan is not required due to the constant torque/speed curve up to the nominal speed and the drive system is certificated to CE, UL/CSA and CCC is in preparation. It also says that commissioning is easy as the motor code can be entered into the convertor.
Siemens sells a portfolio of frequency converters, motors, couplings and gearboxes for many industries and applications, including the cement and mineral sectors.
Mexico/US: Cemex has entered into a global agreement with Petuum to implement its Industrial AI Autopilot software products for autonomous cement plant operations at its plants around the world. The products for cement plant operations are being deployed at select Cemex USA and Mexico plants and will continue to be rolled out in 2019.
"We expect our yield improvements and energy savings to be up to 7%, from the connected AI-based autopilots, which is game-changing for our industry,” said Rodrigo Quintero, Operations Digital Technologies Manager at Cemex.
Petuum says that its Industrial AI Autopilot suite of products can deliver real-time forecasts for key process variables, prescriptions for critical control variables and supervised autosteer aligned with business objectives for all cement plant operations including clinker cooler, preheater, rotary kiln, pyro-process, ball mill and vertical mill processes to achieve lowered energy consumption, optimised fuel mix and increased throughput while maintaining stable operation and product quality. The products are integrated with plant control systems and OSIsoft PI data infrastructure for scalable and standardised deployments across multiple lines and plants globally.
The joint Cemex and Petuum teams achieved a cruise-control-like supervised ‘autosteer mode,’ where the AI Autopilot could run operations with full engage-disengage control available to the operator.

Malvern Panalytical launches next version of Epsilon 1 X-ray fluorescence spectrometer
19 March 2019Netherlands: Malvern Panalytical has launched a next version of Epsilon 1 X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer. The upgrade has reduced the product’s size to 0.15m2. Its precision has been improved by integrating a high-power X-ray tube and a new detector.
“With the new generation of our compact Epsilon 1 benchtop XRF spectrometers, you can take a small yet powerful lab directly to your sample for fast product screening and process control”, said Lieven Kempenaers, Malvern Panalytical Product Manager for benchtop XRF systems.
The Epsilon 1 product is available in a number of versions tailored for difference applications. The Epsilon 1 Lube Oil delivers ASTM 6481-compliant elemental analysis of unused lubricating oils; the Epsilon 1 Sulfur in Fuels quantifies sulphur content in fuels according to ASTM D4294-10 and ISO 20847; the Epsilon 1 Academia enables characterisation of unidentified samples, using Omnian software for standardless analysis; and the integrated camera in the Epsilon 1 for Small Spot Analysis simplifies the investigation of very small objects, inclusions or inhomogeneities.
Holcim Philippines launches new blended cement product
18 March 2019Philippines: Holcim Philippines has launched a new blended cement product called Solido. It is intended to produce concrete that is better than that made from Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) in terms of durability and compressive strength. The product is also more environmentally friendly than OPC as it uses less clinker. The cement producer is also offering technical training, test and field support to potential users. It says it has launched the product to support the country’s construction boom.
Kuwait: Kuwait Cement has made its first delivery of oil well cement to National Petroleum Services. It is producing the product at its Shuaiba plant, according to the Arab Times newspaper. It holds API Monogram licencing from American Petroleum Institute (API) to produce this type of cement.
Portugal: Researchers at the Department of Materials Engineering and Ceramics at the University of Aveiro have developed a so-called ‘eco-cement’ that uses waste cellulose and clay. The cement type uses waste from the pulp industry such as ash and lime grains. This makes up 70% of its composition with the remaining 30% being metakaolin clay. The cement can be manufactured at room temperature reducing its energy consumption massively compared to Ordinary Portland Cement. The research team includes Manfredi Saeli, Rui Novais, Paula Seabra and João Labrincha.
JSW Cement launches slag cement in Goa
12 March 2019India: JSW Cement has launched its ‘Comp Cem’ product in Goa. It is a blend of clinker, ground granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash, according to the United News Of India. The new product is intended to help the cement producer expand its distribution network in the southern and western parts of the country.
