Finland: Wärtsilä’s sales fell by 6% year-on-year to Euro3.18bn in the first nine months of 2021 from Euro3.39bn in the corresponding period of 2020. It increased its order intake by 11% to Euro3.58bn from Euro3.24bn. The company’s cash flow from operating activities fell by 12% to Euro360m from Euro407m. It expects that demand for its offering will increase ‘considerably’ year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2021.
The supplier announced that it will aim to achieve carbon neutral operations and to provide a product portfolio which will be ready for zero carbon fuels by 2030. It published a report entitled Front Loading Net Zero on how production economies can make savings while managing the renewable energy transition. The report concludes that full decarbonisation before 2050 will be financially viable if properly supported by governments and energy companies.
President and CEO Håkan Agnevall said “These new targets demonstrate our commitment to a sustainable future. Our aim is to support our customers on their decarbonisation. Our products, solutions, and services will meet the stringent environmental requirements, and the fuel flexibility and fuel efficiency of the engines powering these sectors are key to enabling the transformation.” Agnevall added “Naturally, we also need to do our part as an organisation and minimise our own environmental footprint.”
Forty cement and concrete companies commit to the Global Cement and Concrete Association’s Roadmap to Net Zero
12 October 2021World: Forty cement and concrete producers, representing 80% of concrete production outside of China in 2020, have together affirmed their commitment to the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA)’s Roadmap to Net Zero concrete decarbonisation strategy. The roadmap’s seven-point plan consists of increased cement plant efficiency, which should eliminate 22% of emissions, increased concrete production efficiency (11%), adjustments to cement and binders (9%), decarbonisation of raw materials (11%), carbon capture and storage (CCS) (36%), a transition to renewable energy (5%) and the natural recarbonation of concrete (6%).
Besides full decarbonisation by 2050, the strategy provides for a 25% reduction in the global concrete sector’s CO2 emissions by 2030 and the elimination of 4.9Bnt of CO2 emissions by 2030 alone. The GCCA called the new commitment a ‘significant acceleration’ of cement and concrete producers’ on-going decarbonisation efforts, and said that it represented ‘the biggest global commitment by any industry’ to carbon neutrality. Acknowledging the burden on cement producers, the GCCA called on downstream companies and governments to support the industry’s transition.
GCCA member China National Building Material (CNBM) CEO Cao Jianglin said “This is a landmark for industry co-operation in decarbonisation. As part of a global industry, it will need collaboration across our sector to achieve it. As one of the leading cement and concrete producers in China, we will play our part in decarbonising the industry.”
Mexico: Cemex has received validation from the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for its 2030 global CO2 emissions reduction targets. The validation attests that the targets conform with the Paris Agreement’s well-below 2°C global warming limit. Under its Future in Action programme, Cemex aims to reduce its cement’s carbon footprint to 40% compared to 1990 levels and achieve 55% renewable energy use by 2030. The company says that it has the global cement industry’s most ambitious 2030 targets.
CEO Fernando Gonzalez said “Climate action is the biggest challenge of our times. Cemex is taking decisive action to address it by defining ambitious emissions reduction targets in line with the SBTi, and executing against those targets.” He added “We commit to continue leading the industry in climate action not only because it creates value, but more importantly because it is the right thing to do. Cemex is building a better future, and that future must be sustainable.”
UltraTech Cement commits to 100% renewable energy by 2050
24 September 2021India: UltraTech has made a commitment to transition to 100% renewable energy use by 2050. The Aditya Birla subsidiary has joined the global RE100 group of companies committed to energy decarbonisation. Asian News International has reported that the producer is already targeting 34% renewable energy use by 2024 from 13% in 2020. It more than doubled its consumption of renewable energy between 2018 and 2020. UltraTech Cement is additionally targeting a CO2 emissions reduction to 462kg/t of cement. It is the first Indian producer to instigate sustainability target-linked financial commitments.
California Nevada Cement Association releases plan for Californian cement industry carbon neutrality by 2045
31 March 2021US: The California Nevada Cement Association (CNCA) has published a plan for the Californian cement industry to meet its target of carbon neutrality by 2045. The plan consists of three pathways, namely: a reduction in process emissions including by alterations to clinker factor and type of additives; an increase in alternative fuel (AF) substitution; and a switch to renewable energy. The association said that the aims are achievable by close stakeholder coordination, constructive public policy engagement and a situational approach based on a flexible portfolio of pathways.
Mexico: Cemex says that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic will not delay its ‘Climate Action Strategy’ that was previously announced in February 2020. The building materials producer has developed a CO2 reduction roadmap to help guide it towards a towards a targeted 35% reduction in net specific CO2 emissions between 1990 and 2030.
The roadmap consists of: reduction of CO2 emissions of clinker through “the production of novel clinkers with lower heat consumption”; use of “alternative decarbonated raw materials”; increased alternative fuel substitution; and increased substitution of clinker with “alternative cementitious materials, using admixtures to enhance strength, and adopting new grinding technologies to improve performance”; in addition to the increased use of renewable energy.
Cemex chief executive officer (CEO) Fernando Gonzalez said, “Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time, and we believe that we can continue to address it as a fundamental component of our efforts to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Dalmia cement commits itself to carbon negativity by 2040
20 September 2019India: Dalmia Cement has revealed its commitment to dropping its net CO2 emissions to below 0t/yr by 2040 as part of its new ‘Future Today’ branding. The company’s plan consists of a transition to renewable power by 2030 and the adoption of plant matter and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for 100% of its fuel needs. Dalmia’s 4.0Mt/yr integrated Ariyalur cement plant in Tamil Nadu will receive a 0.5Mt/yr carbon capture and storage facility in 2022 at the latest. The UK-based Carbon Clean Solutions will provide technology and operational services for the installation, the largest in the cement industry. Mahendra Singh, managing director and CEO of Dalmia Cement, has expressed the hope that its product should become ‘the World’s greenest cement.’
Grupo Cementos plans 100% renewable power at Odessa cement plant
13 September 2019US: Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua’s 0.9Mt/yr integrated cement plant in Odessa, Texas, will run entirely on wind and solar power. Adpren has reported that the company engaged an unnamed energy provider on a 10-year power purchase agreement for the entirety of its electricity consumption, beginning in July 2022. This will cut 45,000t/yr of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and represents a saving of US$4.6m in energy costs over its period of effect, a saving of 22% annually compared to Grupo Cemento’s current bill.
UltraTech Cement to exceed 25% green energy contribution to total energy consumption by 2021
20 June 2019India: UltraTech Cement aims to increase contribution of so-called ‘green energy’ to 25% of its total power consumption by 2021 from 10% at present. It also intends to raise its contribution of renewable energy to its total power consumption by five times in the next two years to 2021 to over 10%. By building capacity for renewable power the cement producer intends to become one of the largest users of renewable energy in the Indian cement sector.
In addition to renewable energy, the green energy contribution includes energy generated through waste heat recovery systems (WHR). During its 2019 financial year UltraTech commissioned 28MW of WHR systems to take its total generation from WHR to 8% of total power consumption. Further upgrades are expected to be completed in a phased manner by 2021, taking its WHR share to 15% of its total power requirement.
“To bring the cement sector in line with the Paris Agreement on climate change, UltraTech Cement’s annual emissions will need to fall by at least 16% by 2030. There are a number of solutions for reducing emissions associated with cement production as identified by the latest Low Carbon Technology Roadmap published by International Energy Agency (IEA) in partnership with Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI). These solutions need to be deployed at scale to meet the decarbonisation challenge,” said K K Maheshwari, the managing director of UltraTech Cement.
UltraTech Cement has set a target to reduce its CO2 emissions by 25% from its 2005 – 2006 level by 2021. The company is also working on CO2 reduction strategies including energy efficiency, alternative fuels, WHR, renewable energy and reducing its clinker ratio.
Cemex UK to use 100% renewable electricity in 2019
07 January 2019UK: Cemex says that it will use 100% renewable electricity at supplied sites in a partnership with energy, services and regeneration group Engie. Engie has been providing electricity to over 150 Cemex UK sites for over 10 years, also supplying gas to 33 of these sites. The current contract is to be extended for a further 12 months. All of the electricity supplied to the sites will be from 100% renewable energy sources including wind energy.
“Cement manufacture is inherently energy-intensive and we work hard to minimise energy consumption within the process constraints. The switch to electricity from renewable sources is playing a key role in our carbon reduction strategy,” said Martin Hills, Head of Energy and Carbon at Cemex in the UK.
Cemex is also using Engie’s demand side services, such as load management to avoid peak tariffs and rapid frequency response, which generates extra revenue for Cemex UK. Engie manages all contractual requirements with National Grid on Cemex UK’s behalf.
