Iraq: A 1200m dry gas pipeline feeding the Najaf cement plant has been commissioned. The project was the first external assignment carried out by the Oil Pipelines Company, according to the National Iraqi News Agency. The plant is operated by the Southern Cement Company.

Saudi Arabia: Data from Yamama Cement shows that national cement production fell by 10.5% year-on-year to 42.1Mt in 2018 from 47.1Mt in 2017. Cement production fell at the majority of local producers with the notable exceptions of Saudi Cement, Southern Cement and others. Clinker production dropped by 3% to 48.3Mt from 49.9Mt. Local deliveries of cement decreased by 13% to 41Mt from 47.1Mt. However, exports of cement rose to 1.1Mt from 0.16Mt and exports of clinker increased to 3.2Mt from no exports in 2017.

Saudi Arabia: Southern Cement’s sales revenue and profits have fallen so far in 2018 due to falling sales volumes and prices. Its revenue fell by 15% year-on-year to US$172m in the first nine months of 2018 from US$203m in the same period in 2017. Its net profit after Zakat and taxes decreased by 44% to US$38m from US$68.5m.

Saudi Arabia: Southern Cement’s net profit fell by 31% year-on-year to US$36.8m in the first half of 2018 from US$53.3m in the same period in 2017. The cement producer blamed the fall in profit on poor demand as well as effects from the Ramadan and Eid public holidays.

Iraq: ASEC Cement and Iraq's Qemmet El-Iraq have won a 14-year contract to renovate and manage the Muthanna Cement Plant in Muthanna Province, Iraq.

Abulla Hussein of Qemmet El-Iraq and ASEC Cement Chairman and CEO Giorgio Bodo attended a signing ceremony in Baghdad with Southern Cement, the state holding company that controls Muthanna Cement, on 28 August 2013. The value of the contract was not released.

"Iraq has embarked on a robust plan to rebuild and modernise its infrastructure and has launched major housing, industrial, and community projects. The rehabilitation of Muthanna is an important part of Iraq's investment in bridging the supply gap, particularly in the south," said Bodo.

Muthanna Cement is located in southern Iraq, between Najaf and Basra. Built in the 1980s, the plant has a total clinker production capacity of 1.92Mt/yr and 2Mt/yr of cement. Due to economic sanctions placed on Iraq in the 1990s, the company's current production capacity is around 20%. Work on the plant will start in the second quarter of 2014 with a plan to reach the plant's original cement production capacity of 2Mt/yr in August 2016.
