UK: Breedon Group’s revenue grew by 32% year-on-year to Euro1bn in 2018 from Euro759m. Its profit rose by 13% to Euro75.2 from Euro66.3m. It sold 2Mt of cement and its ready-mixed concrete sales fell slightly to 3.2Mm³.

“We can be justifiably proud of our results. We outperformed the Great Britain market in sales volumes of all our key products, grew our revenues and underlying earning before interest and tax (EBIT), and once again generated strong cashflow, enabling us to pay down a material proportion of our post-Lagan debt by the year-end,” said executive chairman Peter Tom.

The building materials manufacturer said that the integration of Lagan Cement into the group enabled it to export cement from Kinnegad in Ireland to the UK. In early 2019 it intends to import cement from Kinnegad to a new terminal in Runcorn. Investments in the reporting year included an expansion of its transport fleet in the UK, a new mobile plant at its Hope quarry and the next stage of a four-year project to replace plant control systems at the Hope cement plant. Its single largest investment in 2019 will be the replacement of the raw mill drive at the Hope plant.

Breedon Group operates two cement plants, around 80 quarries, 40 asphalt plants, around 170 ready-mixed concrete and mortar plants, nine concrete and clay products plants, four contract surfacing businesses, six terminals and two slate production facilities. It employs nearly 3000 people and has nearly 900Mt of mineral reserves and resources.

Nigeria: Aliko Dangote, the president of Dangote Cement, says that his company is targeting exports of US$600m/yr to sub-Saharan Africa. He made the comments at the Dangote Cement Distributors’ Award Night in Lagos, according to the Nigerian Guardian newspaper. He added that Dangote Cement will become the largest exporter of cement in the region in 2019. It plans to focus on African countries with limited limestone reserves. The company is building new terminals at Onne and in Lagos. He also expressed hope that congestion at the Port of Apapa would be cleared soon to help the company meet its export targets.

Sweden: Cementa says that it plans to stop production of cement and clinker at its Degerhamn cement plant at the end of April 2019. The subsidiary of Germany’s HeidelbergCement said that it made the decision due to low profitability at the site and tightening environmental regulations.

The unit will continue to be used as a terminal and port operations will carry on at the site. Microcement will also continue to be made at the plant. The site’s quarry permit will be withdrawn but Cementa will continue to own the land and it will be gradually be restored. Six staff members will work at the site and a new site manager, Tommy Pettersson, has been appointed.

Brazil: Votorantim Cimentos has started shipping cement from its Aracaju terminal in Sergipe state to its Manaus terminal in Amazonas state to expand its business in the north of the country. It purchased the Manaus unit from Cemex in 2018, according to the Valor Economico newspaper. A 20,000t cement carrier will be used exclusively for the project.

Ghana: Ghacem has linked its Kumasi terminal to the Data One server, a logistics product, to centralise sales and ordering processing. It follows requests by distributors following a survey, according to the Ghanaian Times newspaper. Sales and orders at the terminal will now use a similar system to that at the company’s plants at Tema and Takoradi. Plans are now being prepared to link the company’s other terminals – at Tamale, Buipe, Techiman and Dwenase – to the system.

Europe: Cemex has signed a deal to sell its assets in the Baltic and Nordic countries to Germany’s Schwenk for Euro340m. The transaction is expected to complete within the first quarter of 2019, subject to regulatory approval.

The Baltic assets being divested consist of one 1.7Mt/yr integrated cement plant in Broceni, Latvia, as well as four aggregates quarries, two cement quarries, six ready-mix concrete plants, one marine terminal and one land distribution terminal in that country. The assets divested also include Cemex’s approximate 38% indirect interest in a 1.8Mt/yr cement plant in Akmene in Lithuania. In addition, the exports business to Estonia is also included as part of the divestment.

The Nordic assets being divested consist of three import terminals in Finland, four import terminals in Norway and four import terminals in Sweden.

Spain: FYM-HeidelbergCement plans to invest Euro2.5m in a new 4900m² plot at the Port of Malaga. The company will use the unit to export cement and clinker, according to the La Opinión de Málaga newspaper. At present the cement producer exports 0.5Mt/yr of clinker to markets in Africa, South America and Europe. FYM-HeidelbergCement operates an integrated cement plant in Malaga.

Spain: The local council in Alcudia, Mallorca is considering a licence application for the construction of a 65,000t cement terminal at its port. The application follows the end of a public consultation period, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin newspaper. The unit plans to have a capacity of at least 65,000t for the four years of its operation and then it will rise to 90,000t. It will use a pneumatic conveying system to minimise dust pollution emissions.

The Balearic Ports Authority previously gave its authorisation to the project in 2018 but it has faced opposition from environmental protestors. Cemex announced in late 2018 that it intended to stop production at its Lloseta cement plant on the island.

UK: Hanson has completed a Euro1.25m upgrade to its Bellshill cement terminal in Glasgow, converting it into a dual product storage and distribution site. Improvements included new pipework and a new silo monitoring system. The site has three silos: two for cement powder, transported by rail from the company’s Ribblesdale cement plant in Lancashire, and one for the storage and distribution of ground granulated blastfurnace slag (GGBS), produced at the company’s Teesport site in Middlesbrough. The upgrade took 17 months to complete. Cement has been transported by rail to the Bellshill terminal since 2007.

Indonesia: Indocement has opened its Lampung terminal and packing plant following its successful commissioning. The unit can process 1000t/day of cement and pack 1500t/day. The new terminal is intended to strengthen the company’s market position in Sumatra.
