Sibirskiy Cement spent US$17.8m on upgrades in 2016
11 January 2017Russia: Sibirskiy Cement spent a total of US$17.8m towards upgrading its cement plants in 2016. It spent US$5.2m towards modernising and automating production and about US$12.6m on the repair and maintenance of equipment, according to local media. Installing automated control systems was a priority of the upgrade work. Notably, the cement producer’s Topkinskiy plant received upgrades to its grinding and finished products units. Upgrade work will continue in 2017 with purchases of both domestic and foreign equipment.
Petron Engineering to build silos for Shree grinding plant
05 January 2017India: Petron Engineering Construction has received a letter of intent to build silos and other miscellaneous work at Shree Cement’s cement grinding plant near Cuttack in Orissa. The contract is valued at just under US$5m, according to Accord Fintech. In September 2016 Petron received letter of intent from Shree Cement for civil work at cement plants in Aurangabad, Bihar and Gulbarga, Karnataka with a contract value of just under US$7.5m.
Bua Group to hit 10Mt/yr cement production via upgrades
19 December 2016Nigeria: Bua Group plans to reach a cement production capacity of 10Mt/yr via upgrade projects at its Edo and Sokoto plants by the end of 2018, according to its chairman and chief executive officer Abdul Salman Rabiu. He made the comments to local press at the company's 2016 annual customer forum and awards ceremony in Abuja.
Cruz Azul to spend US$300m on plant upgrades
15 December 2016Mexico: The Cruz Azul Cooperative plans to spend US$300m towards upgrades at its four cement plants. The investment will form part of a modernisation project over the next four years, according to CNN Expansión. The initiative will involve updating older production lines with environmental upgrades, expanding its production capacity for export and generating energy from wind power.
South Valley Cement to consider cost of second production line
06 December 2016Egypt: South Valley Cement is considering the cost of building a second production line following an increase in the cost of equipment from foreign suppliers due to the devualtion of the Egyptian Pound. The company’s management will meet in December 2016 to discuss the new 1.5Mt/yr line and how to pay for it, according to Daily News Egypt. The line will be built at the producer’s plant in Beni Suef’s industrial zone, increasing its overall production capacity to 3Mt/yr. It will take three years to build. South Valley Cement won a cement licence from the Industrial Development Authority in December 2016.
Ohorongo Cement inaugurates plant upgrade
02 December 2016Namibia: Ohorongo Cement has inaugurated upgrades to its cement plant in Otavi including a composite cement unit and a third packaging line. The US$10.6m expansion is expected to increase the plant’s production capacity to 1Mt/yr. Deputy Minister of Mines and Energy Kornelia Shilunga presided at the event.
The composite cement unit will enable the plant to produce various types of cement. The new packaging line will increase the plant’s packaging rate to 6800bags/hr from 4400bags/hr. Ohorongo Cement has also installed a 2t big bag filling station for special projects, aimed at optimising logistics.
The Namibian Standards Institute also certified Ohorongo Cement’s products at the inauguration for fulfilling the requirements of the Namibian Standard NAMS/EN 197-1:2014. The scope of certification covers five types of cement manufactured by Ohorongo Cement: CEM II A-LL 42.5N, CEM II B-LL 32.5N, CEM II B-V 42.5N, CEM I 42.5R, and CEM I 52.5N. The new certification should allow Ohorongo Cement to enter markets in Zambia and Botswana without additional certification and inspections.
Tarmac opens rail facility at Aberthaw Cement Plant
30 November 2016UK: Tarmac’s Aberthaw Cement Plant has opened a rail facility to despatch bulk cement. The rail depot will mean that trains will be used to transport cement in Wales for the first time in over 20 years. The yard is expected to replace 2500 annual truck movements on the local roads. Jane Hutt, the Welsh Assembly Member for Vale of Glamorgan, officially opened the facility.
“Reducing our road movements by 25% is a significant achievement and it puts us in an even better position to supply materials to our customers across Wales and the south west of England in a more sustainable way. The plant has been in operation for over 100 years and we employ 109 people, the majority of whom live within 10 miles of the site, so this development demonstrates our commitment to the Vale of Glamorgan,” said Aberthaw Cement Plant manager, Chris Bradbury.
Second line at Nova Cimangola to start in 2018
24 November 2016Angola: The second production line at Nova Cimangola’s plant in Luanda is expected to start production in mid-2018. Cimangola’s administrator Manuel Pacavira Júnior revealed details of the upgrade’s progress to the Jornal de Angola newspaper during a visit to the site by Secretary of State Kiala Gabriel. All the equipment for the clinker production stage of the project has been assembled and tests are scheduled to start in December 2016. The project has cost US$350m. Funding for the second phase of the upgrade project is still being gathered.
Savannah Cement release details on cement plant upgrade
18 November 2016Kenya: Savannah Cement has released further details on its plans to upgrade its Athi River grinding plant. It intends to increase the capacity at the site by 1.2Mt/yr to 2.4Mt/yr with the installation of a vertical roller mill. Additionally, new belt conveyors, a packing plant and dust filters will be added. It plans to have the upgrade commissioned by mid-2018, according to the Business Daily newspaper. It will be built from December 2016 to March 2018.
"We are hoping to issue the tender for the project in early 2017, possibly January or February. Being a second production line, construction work should take anything between 14 and 18 months, therefore we would have the plant up and running by mid-2018. Once we get the approvals we will immediately look to finalise the financing aspect of the project," said Savannah Cement managing director Ronald Ndegwa. The cement producer is adding production capacity to expand its range of cement, with a focus on its hydraulic road binder blend that is used in road construction.
Sanghi Industries to raise US$180m for expansion
10 November 2016India: Sanghi Industries plans to raise US$180m towards increasing its production capacity. It has recently increased the production capacity at its Kutch cement plant by 1.2Mt/yr to 4.1Mt/yr, according to the Times of India. Following this the cement producer intends to increase its capacity to 8.1Mt/yr in the next three to four years. It plans to raise funds through a mix of internal accruals, debt and equity. The company is also building a 15MW waste heat recovery system that is likely to be commissioned by the end of 2018.
