Vietnam increases cement and clinker exports by 16% to 23.9Mt in first eight months of 2020

17 September 2020

Vietnam: The Vietnam National Cement Corporation (VICEM) says that total cement and clinker exports in the first eight months of 2020 were 23.9Mt, up by 16% year-on-year from 20.7Mt in the corresponding period of 2019. The total value of exports rose by 1.2% to US$882m from US$872m, corresponding to a price drop of 12% to US$36.9/t from US$42.1/t.

Saigon Online News has reported that the main source of demand growth is China’s burgeoning post-coronavirus lockdown construction market, where a 35% year-on-year increase in cement consumption in July 2020 has enabled Vietnamese producers and traders to undercut the cement prices of the newly streamlined domestic industry. China received 12.6Mt (53%) of Vietnam’s cement and clinker exports, followed by the Philippines with 4.5Mt (19%) and Bangladesh with 1.7Mt (7.1%).

Electricity tariff hike set to hit cement prices in Vietnam

The Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation (VICEM) said that cement producers had also been hit by an increase in coal prices, according to the Vietnam News Agency. The rise in the price of coal follows a lack of supply from the Vietnam National Coal and Minerals Industry Holding Group (VINACOMIN) leading to producers to import coal. Cong Thanh Cement has not raise its retail prices but has charged distributors more. Prime Minister calls for overcapacity report

26 November 2018

Vietnam: The Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked the Ministry of Construction and VICEM to report on the country’s excess cement capacity, which is set to reach 25-36Mt/yr by 2020.

The latest statistics from the Ministry of Construction’s Building Material Department show that cement consumption was approximately 45Mt in the first half of 2018, a rise of 30% year-on-year compared to the same period of 2017, and more than 50% of the year’s plan.

The sector’s capacity is 110Mt/yr, including the volume from plants expected to be built in 2018. Aside from that, existing plants have kept improving technology so their production capacity might reach 120-130Mt/yr by 2020.

Three large projects with the total capacity of 10Mt/yr were put into operation in the past 12 months. In 2019 many more projects are expected to come into operation, with a total new capacity of 12Mt/yr coming online.
