India: Four UltraTech Cement cement products have received Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification. UltraTech Cement's ordinary Portland cement (OPC), Portland pozzolana cement (PPC), Portland slag cement (PSC) and Portland composite cement (PCC) all successfully underwent lifecycle assessment studies in line with EPD requirements.
The Aditya Birla subsidiary said that 70% of its cement sales consist of blended cement. It offers over 70 different GreenPro certified products across its range.
India: The Confederation of Indian Industry has certified Sagar Cements’ Bayyavaram grinding plant as an Excellent Energy Efficient Unit with an award at the Energy Management Excellence Awards 2022. The facility was also among recipients of the confederation’s GreenCo Star Performer Awards 2022.
Cementos Portland Valderrivas renews Alcalá de Guadaíra cement plant’s EMAS registration
23 September 2022Spain: Cementos Portland Valderrivas has renewed its European Environmental Management System (EMAS) registration for its Alcalá de Guadaíra cement plant. The Spanish Association for Standardisation (AENOR) and government of Andalusia verified the registration. The company says that it confirms its commitment to the environment and transparency.
Algeria: Groupe des Ciments d'Algérie (GICA) has obtained a certificate of conformity with European standards (CE) for three types of cement. The certification should allow the company to export more products to Europe, according to the Expression newspaper. It applies to its Gica Moudhad and Gica Béton products. The move follows similar certification of products with the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR) from the company’s Aïn El Kebira plant in July 2021. At the same time the Minister of Industry said it was helping the group with its export strategy.
In 2021 GICA exported 2.25Mt of cement to countries including the Ivory Coast, Gambia, Ghana, Mauritania, Senegal , Cameroon, Benin, Guinea, Brazil, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and a number of European countries.
Holcim Ecuador launches ECOPlanet cements
19 July 2022Ecuador: Holcim Ecuador has launched its new portfolio of ECOPlanet reduced CO2 cements. The products bear the new green and blue branding of the Holcim group.
CEO Dolores Prado said that the company began its green transition with the September 2019 carbon neutral certification of its Agrovial, Base Vial and Maestro cements.
India: The Indian Ministry of Mines and Indian Bureau of Mines have awarded UltraTech Cement Five Star ratings for 10 limestone mines across India. Assessment took place within the Indian mining Sustainable Development Framework, which quantifies sustainability, efficiency, land use and resettlement, besides other social impacts.
Indonesia: The Indonesia Ministry of Environment & Forestry and the provincial government of Aceh have awarded Solusi Bangun Indonesia’s Andalas cement plant a Green PROPER rating. Green is the highest rating in the PROPER awards scheme, which assesses businesses’ environmental and social impacts.
In June 2022, Solusi Bangun Indonesia won the Sustainable Business Awards 2022 award in the category Global Initiatives for Significant Achievement in Sustainability Strategy. The group says that its focus remains on providing sustainable solutions, managing its climate impact, developing the circular economy, preserving water, protecting nature and supporting people and communities.
DG Khan Cement to start exporting cement to the US
15 June 2022Pakistan: DG Khan Cement Company is ready to export 50,000t of cement to the US following a certification process. The Tomini Felicity bulk carrier was reportedly being loaded at the Port of Karachi in mid-June 2022 for shipping to Houston in Texas, according to the News International newspaper. The transport is part of a 100,000t deal with a US-based company that was arranged in mid-2021. The intervening period has been spent arranging the necessary certificates. The export is believed to be the first time a Pakistan-based producer has sent cement to the US.
Ghana: The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has reported discoveries of Empire Cement brand cement on sale on the open market despite neither it nor the Ghana Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) having issued permits for Empire Cement to produce cement. Graphic Online News has reported that the suspect products are wrongly labelled with certification marks. GSA director general Alex Dodoo warned that this constitutes an offence.
Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies’ clinkerless cement secures Scientific and Technical Center for Building certification
24 March 2022France: The Scientific and Technical Center for Building (CSTB) has certified Hoffmann Green Cement Technologies’ clinkerless H-UKR alkali-activated slag cement for structural use in buildings of all types. BusinessWire News has reported that the certification confirms the product’s safety, sustainability, lifespan and performance in conformity with Eurocode 2 and Eurocode 8 design standards.
