Grupo Argos named in Dow Jones Sustainability Index

Colombia: Dow Jones has named Grupo Argos in its Sustainability Index 2021, the company’s ninth time appearing in the ranking. It achieved its highest ratings in materiality, risk management, environmental reporting, climate change strategy, social reporting and human rights. The group said that the listing constitutes its recognition as the most sustainable cement company in the world. Its sustainable initiatives include offering collection of its used cement bags, supplying all the electricity for its Colombian operations from renewable sources and currently having three credit facilities linked to environmental, social and governance indicators.

Legal and sustainability vice-president Maria Isabel Echeverri said “At Argos, we are greatly satisfied with this result which places us as a world benchmark in sustainability and reassures our commitment to closing gaps and implementing best practices in social, environmental, financial and corporate governance matters. This drives us to continue moving forward in creating social value to build the dreams of housing and infrastructure for millions of people.”

Holcim launches 2030 People Strategy

Switzerland: Holcim has announced new global social impact targets for 2030 under its new People Strategy. The targets fall under three pillars. These are ‘bridging the housing and infrastructure gap,’ ‘improving livelihoods’ and ‘upholding human rights.’ The company says that this will entail efforts to ensure adequate housing and infrastructure for all, support for health, education and skill building and the implementation of due diligence across its value chain. The strategy includes a target to create Euro468m of social value by 2030. The figure will include the total value of schools, hospitals, rural roads and affordable housing renovated or built in the period. Between 2016 and 2020, Holcim benefited over 31m people with Euro187.21m in social investment.

CEO Jan Jenisch said “Our business plays an essential role in society's progress. We build the roads, bridges, hospitals and schools that enable people to thrive around the world. With 3bn people expected to lack access to adequate housing by 2030, I am committed to putting our business to work to uplift our communities.”

Lafarge Canada to supply ECOPact for sustainable affordable housing in Eastern Canada

11 October 2021

Canada: Habitats for Humanity has again partnered with Lafarge Canada for its annual affordable housing fundraiser in Kingston, Ontario. This year, the partners will attempt to raise US$21,700 over 27 days to support the construction of sustainable housing in Eastern Canada. Lafarge Canada has pledged 80m3 of its ECOPact reduced-CO2 concrete to the project.

Eastern Canada regional head of environment and sustainability Rob Cumming said "Our sustainability goals overlap safe housing with reduced climate impact.” He added "We are excited about this first milestone and are looking forward to the future supply of our ECOPlanet solutions.”

Semen Indonesia is triple winner at Nusantara Corporate Social Responsibility Awards 2020

Indonesia: The La Tofi School of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has named Semen Indonesia as the winner in three categories at the Nusantara CSR Awards 2020. Indonesia Government News has reported that the three categories are: Health and Economic Assistance for Emergency Management of Covid-19, Leaders Inspiring CSR Practices and Community Involvement in Handling Waste.

General manager of CSR Edy Saraya said that the Covid-19 outbreak requires “integrated countermeasures, including the involvement of all components of society.” He added, “Through the programme implemented, we hope to help prevent and control the spread of Covid-19 and to be able to accelerate the implementation of (health protocol) adaptation of new habits. Especially for those affected by the pandemic, it can improve the economy of the community and the environment around the operational area."

Vassiliko Cement wins environmental awards

Cyprus: Vassiliko Cement has won the Gold Environmental Protection Award in 2018 at the Pancyprian Environmental Awards for Organisations and Businesses. The prize was given for the cement producer’s implementation of its Corporate Social Responsibility Policy. Company staff worked with local communities, non-government organisations (NGO) and others. The competition was organised by the Cyprus Center for Environmental Research and Education, in cooperation with the government and other groups.

Nigeria wins first LafargeHolcim CSR awards for Middle East and Africa

10 January 2019

Nigeria: Lafarge Africa’s Nigerian operations have won the inaugural Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Awards of LafargeHolcim for the Middle East and Africa. The country won the overall award after beating 35 other countries in two of the four award categories, according to the Vanguard newspaper. It won gold for its CSR initiatives in the Education and Employment category ahead of Egypt (silver) and Kenya (bronze). Nigeria also won gold in the Shelter and Infrastructure category ahead of Morocco (silver) and Cote d’Ivoire (bronze).

Lafarge Africa runs its ‘Easy Home’ initiative in Nigeria, to help individuals build decent houses on a low budget. In 2016 over 30,000 people benefited from the initiative. In 2017, Lafarge Africa created the Cement Professionals Training Program, to help young people in the fields of technology, engineering, cement manufacturing, instrumentation and automation. The company made investments in social investment programs and initiatives in 2017 in its host communities across the country, directly impacting more than 450,000 beneficiaries. Lafarge Africa also complements the local government’s efforts to improve primary school education through the Lafarge Africa National Literacy Competition.

Fairport Engineering awarded corporate social responsibility rating

UK: Fairport Engineering has been awarded a corporate social responsibility rating. The accreditation provides a measure of the engineering company’s corporate citizenship and its business practices. In the cement sector Fairport offers a number of systems including materials handling, bulk raw material intake and processing to clinker grinding, and blending, cement storage, packing and palletising.
