UltraTech Cement deploys liquefied natural gas trucks at Pune cement terminal

11 April 2023

India: UltraTech Cement says that it has made a second deployment of GreenLine liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered cement trucks in its cement operations. Indo-Asian News Service has reported that the new trucks will operate from UltraTech Cement’s Pune cement terminal in Maharashtra. GreenLine says that its LNG trucks have 28% lower CO2 emissions than ordinary cement trucks, equating to reductions of 24t/yr per truck for UltraTech Cement.

The cement producer’s associate vice president Tanmay Pradhan said “We are dedicated to creating a sustainable future, and we are fully committed to collaborating with our partners and stakeholders to achieve our goal of a cleaner environment. Our association with GreenLine is a step forward in our ongoing efforts to decrease emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and promote sustainability."

Dalmia Cement (Bharat) deploys gas-fuelled truck fleet

20 February 2023

India: Dalmia Cement (Bharat) has successfully launched its new fleet of 35 liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled trucks from its Murli cement plant in Maharashtra. The trucks are of two types, covering ranges of 50 - 600km, and will transport bagged cement and bulk raw materials. They have 28% lower CO2 emissions than conventional diesel-powered trucks, and are thus able to eliminate 840t/yr of CO2 emissions, while also reducing emissions of nitrous oxides (NOx) by 59% and particulates by 91%, and eliminating emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx).

Dalmia Cement (Bharat) says that its next move will be to launch a second fleet of 25 trucks from its Ariyalapur cement plant in Tamil Nadu. By April 2024, it plans to convert 10% of its 3000 truck-strong fleet to LNG fuel.

A spokesperson for the company said “Dalmia Cement has been following the business philosophy of Clean & Green is Profitable and Sustainable. Our overall CO2 emissions have come down from 670kg/t to 467kg/t – one of the lowest globally – and we are focusing on realising our carbon negative goal by 2040. We are delighted to partner with GreenLine Logistics for further reduction of our Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions.”

JK Lakshmi Cement awards solar power plant contract to Amplus Solar

08 February 2023

India: Amplus Solar has secured a contract with JK Lakshmi Cement for construction of a 56MW solar power plant at the producer’s 1.7Mt/yr Durg cement plant in Chhattisgarh. The producer expects to eliminate 73,000t/yr of CO2 emissions as a result.

JK Lakshmi Cement’s president Arun Shukla said "We support the country's vision to achieve net zero emissions by 2070. We have taken multiple steps to reduce both direct and indirect carbon emissions. Last month, for the first time in India, we deployed liquefied natural gas (LNG) trucks to transport raw material. Now, with the switch to solar energy at our Durg plant, nearly 80% of the plant’s energy requirements will be met renewably.”

Amplus Energy previously partnered with UltraTech Cement for a 50MW solar installation at one of its cement plants in 2019.

Ferus Smit launches MV Shetland cement carrier

17 April 2019

Netherlands: Ferus Smit has launched MV Shetland at its Westerbroek Yard. The 8000DWT vessel is the third dedicated cement carrier built for JT Cement, a joint venture between Sweden’s Erik Thun and Norway’s Jebsen Cement.

The ship is equipped with a liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuelled propulsion system to reduce its emissions. It incorporates a 200m3 pressurised LNG tank positioned in the foreship. The cement cargo system will consist of a fully automated cement loading and unloading system, based on fluidisation of cement by means of compressed air.

Ferus Smit delivers world's 1st LNG-powered cement tanker

23 December 2015

Netherlands: Shipbuilding company Ferus Smit delivered its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered cement tanker MV Greenland to JT Cement on 23 December. Built for the joint venture JT Cement, formed by Swedish shipping company Erik Thun AB and Norway-based KG Jebsen Cement, MV Greenland departed the Delfzijl harbour on its first commercial voyage to Rostock where it will receive its first cement load.

The vessel is the first ever dry cargo vessel with an LNG fuelled propulsion system and LNG tanks integrated inside the hull. The unique design incorporates a pressurised LNG tank positioned in the foreship. While sailing on LNG, the vessel will meet high emission criteria.

The cement cargo system consists of a fully automated cement loading and unloading system, based on fluidisation of cement by means of compressed air. The cement can be loaded and unloaded fully enclosed through pipes, thus dust-free.
