Monarch Cement and Evergy Energy Solutions to build 20MW solar power plant at Humboldt cement plant

02 February 2024

US: Monarch Cement and Evergy Energy Solutions plan to build a 20MW solar project in Humboldt, Kansas. The project is scheduled to commence in early 2024, and will serve as a ‘benchmark for integrating renewable energy in business operations,’ according to the partners.

Monarch Cement president Kent Webber said “The board of directors and management of Monarch Cement are extremely excited about this win-win venture, where we are making a giant movement toward achieving our 2050 carbon neutrality goals, being socially responsible and providing a more than significant return on investment to our shareholders." He added "Evergy Energy Solutions has done an incredible job of leading and providing solutions at every obstacle. We couldn't be happier with Evergy Energy Solutions’ performance, professionalism and command of the subject."

Sagar Cements raises sales in third quarter of 2024 financial year

25 January 2024

India: Sagar Cements recorded sales of US$80.5m in the third quarter of the 2024 financial year, up by 16% year-on-year from US$69.3m during the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year. Cement sales volumes rose by 14% year-on-year. The Hindu BusinessLine News has reported that the growth allowed Sagar Cements to reduce its net losses by 57%, to US$1.22m.

Managing director Sreekanth Reddy said “Favourable prices prevailed in our key markets. As far as EBITDA and margins are concerned, we observed a significant enhancement on a per-tonne basis, consistent with our earlier projections.” Reddy added “We anticipate this positive trend to persist in the future, supported in part by higher utilisation levels of recently-acquired units and strategic initiatives aimed at promoting the use of green power, alternative fuels and the deployment of electric trucks and wheel loaders.”

10 sustainable cement and concrete technology developers launch the Decarbonized Cement and Concrete Alliance

North America: A new coalition for the scaling and deployment of low-carbon building materials, the creation of new clean cement and concrete jobs and the promotion of environmental justice launched earlier in January 2024. Called the Decarbonized Cement and Concrete Alliance (DC2), it comprises alternative cement developers Biomason, Brimstone, Chement, Fortera and Terra CO2, sequestration company Blue Planet Systems, circular concrete producer CarbonBuilt, biogenic limestone producer Minus Materials, hydrothermal processing technology developer Queens Carbon and electrified cement production technology developer Sublime Systems. DC2’s areas of engagement in policy will include tax credits, standards, ecolabeling and subsidisation, in line with the US Department of Energy’s Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Low-Carbon Cement strategy.

CarbonBuilt’s government and community affairs manager Sal Brzozowski said “DC2’s platform of robust policy, standards and incentives to scale innovative solutions will not only accelerate deep decarbonisation, but also transform the concrete industry from one of the world’s largest CO2 emitters to one of the world’s largest carbon sinks.”

Ambuja Cements to build US$168m cement facility in Telangana

17 January 2024

India: Ambuja Cements has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government of Telangana for the construction of a new cement facility in the state. The News Minute has reported that the producer plans to invest US$168m in the project. The MoU is part of an agreement between parent company Adani Group and the state of Telangana covering investments worth US$1.49bn. Other projects include an MoU with Adani Group’s renewables subsidiary Adani Green Energy for the construction of a total of 1350MW of energy storage capacity.

Votorantim Cimentos and Atlas Renewable Energy partner to build 470MW solar power plant

16 January 2024

Brazil: Votorantim Cimentos and Atlas Renewable Energy have launched a joint venture to build a 470MW solar power plant in Paracatu, Minas Gerais. Additionally, the parties signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the supply of 100GWh/yr of solar energy for Votorantim Cimentos' cement plants between 2026 and 2041. The moves align with the producer’s aim to achieve 75% renewable energy reliance in its operations.

UltraTech Cement to acquire 26% stake in Amplus Ages

12 January 2024

India: UltraTech Cement has concluded a deal to acquire a 26% stake in renewable energy provider Amplus Ages. ET Infra News has reported the value of the deal as US$5.91m. The parties expect the deal to complete within 180 days of its execution.

The cement producer, a subsidiary of Aditya Birla, said "The acquisition is for the purposes of meeting the company's green energy needs, optimising energy costs and complying with regulatory requirements for captive power consumption."

Holcim Argentina achieves 75% renewable energy use

25 December 2023

Argentina: Throughout the second half of 2023, Holcim Argentina estimates that it will use 75% renewable energy. The milestone is the outcome of an agreement signed with 360 Energy in April 2023, under which the renewable power provider contributes to the energy mix at all of Holcim Argentina’s cement production facilities. Holcim Argentina says that the deal will help to eliminate 68,600t/yr of CO2 from its operations. The producer said that it also invested in upgrades to help reduce its water consumption by 6% throughout 2023.

Holcim Argentina has invested US$1m in on-going and planned upgrades to its facilities, and plans to invest a further US$4.9m.

Ambuja Cements to invest US$722m in renewable energy projects

18 December 2023

India: Adani Group subsidiary Ambuja Cements plans to invest US$722m in renewable energy projects to help decarbonise its cement production. The producer has a renewable power capacity target of 1000MW, through solar and wind projects, by the end of the 2026 financial year. The proposals include a 600MW solar power project and 150MW wind power project in Gujarat, and a 250MW solar power project in Rajasthan. The company also plans to increase its waste heat recovery (WHR) capacity to 397MW by late 2028 from 103MW at present.

Ajay Kapur, the chief executive officer of Adani Group’s cement business, said "This strategic investment reaffirms our steadfast commitment to sustainable practices. We are not just aiming for a substantial increase in green power capacity but setting the stage for a transformative shift in the cement industry. They align not only with our growth trajectory but also with the national objective of decarbonisation and greener future and this helps us become competitive and sustainable."

Adani Group announced in mid-December 2023 that it was committed to investing US$100bn in the decade to the end of 2033 towards transitioning its operations to net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

UltraTech Cement to use 60% renewable energy by 2026 financial year

13 December 2023

India: UltraTech Cement plans to more than double the share of renewable electricity in its energy mix to 60% by the 2026 financial year, which will end on 31 March 2026, from 22% at present. Asian News International has reported that the group plans to reach 85% renewable energy use by 2030. It presently has 691MW-worth of installed renewable power capacity, comprised of 429MW of contracted renewable power plants and 262MW of waste heat recovery (WHR) plants. Other decarbonisation technologies in UltraTech Cement’s operations besides renewable power include its use of compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas as vehicle fuel.

India: Adani Group says that it will power 60% of its cement production using renewable energy by 2028. In a post on X, the group noted that its Adani Cement business uses fly ash or slag in cement production at 90% of its plants.
