Rybnitsa cement plant halts operations due to energy crisis
13 January 2025Moldova: The Rybnitsa cement plant has closed amid a cutoff of gas supply to the Transnistrian region, leaving half of its 650 employees at home with 66% of their pay, while the rest carry out equipment repairs and cleaning, according to IPN news.
Interim director Oksana Baka said “The plant had a plan to produce about 30,000t of cement during this period. This stock would have ensured our protection on the market, but now the situation is critical because our supplies are insufficient.” Contributions to the local budget will decrease if gas supplies are not restored by February 2025.
The plant is modernising its dust filtration system and preparing for resumption once gas supplies are restored. On 1 January 2025, Gazprom stopped supplying gas to the Transnistrian region, after gas transit through Ukraine ended. The region remains under a state of emergency until 8 February 2025.
Hetauda Cement Industry faces disruption
07 January 2025Nepal: Hetauda Cement Industry has paused production for nearly three months, with no clear timeline for the return to regular cement production, according to Khabar Hub news. The company has cited a need for repairs to various equipment and the installation of new machinery as the cause.
Basanta Raj Pandey, general manager, said that operations depend on confirmation of a regular 8MW power supply from the Nepal Electricity Authority. Ongoing negotiations with the NEA have reportedly yet to resolve daily power cuts, which have delayed the repairs and installations, which are expected to take several more weeks. The company once produced 18,000 bags/day of cement, but now produces just 10,000 bags/day due to deteriorating equipment. A bidding process for the procurement of 4000t/day of coal has now begun.
Boral completes maintenance at Berrima plant
26 February 2024Australia: Boral's Berrima cement plant team has successfully concluded its annual kiln shutdown and maintenance period. The producer invested US$13.1m and 100,000 working hours over a period of three weeks. The project required coordination with 50 different contracting companies to undertake mechanical repairs and replace the kiln refractory, which is crucial for protecting the kiln shell from heat damage and ensuring operational safety. Employing Cement 4.0 technology and advanced diagnostic tools, the team efficiently identified the necessary repairs. About 300 employees and contractors were engaged in the specialist tasks, facilitating a rapid resumption of kiln operations.
