Gazakh Cement makes first clinker and plans expansion for 2017

Azerbaijan: Corporation Accord has reported that LLC Gazakh Cement Plant has started clinker production. It reports that the company will increase its rate of production to 70% by mid-September 2014 before ramping up to 100% of its 2500t/day (~0.8Mt/yr) clinker capacity in October 2014.

There are plans for the Sinoma-built plant to undergo capacity expansion in the coming years, with an increase to a capacity of 3Mt/yr of cement in 2017.

Vissai Ninh Binh Group to export 1.5Mt of clinker to Réunion

Vietnam: Vissai Ninh Binh Group has signed a contract with a French partner to export 1.5Mt of clinker to Ciment de Bourbon to serve to expressway road project on the French island of Réunion. This is the biggest contract that Vietnamese cement producers have secured to date, said Vissai Ninh Binh Group's deputy director Nguyen Tien Dat.

The clinker will be shipped at a price of US$42/t under the contract that will be effective for five years, the deputy director said. He noted that the firm has carefully considered the prices to avoid the negative impact driven by the fluctuations in prices of transportation.

Cement production falls in Xinjiang in first half of 2014

China: Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China saw cement production fall by 14.4% year-on-year to 12.8Mt in the first half of 2014, the local administration of building materials has revealed. Cement sales dropped by 13% to 12.6Mt during the same period.

Meanwhile, the region produced 13.5Mt of clinker in the first half of 2014, a rise of 10.5%. At the end of June 2014 clinker inventories totalled 9.04Mt, an increase of 75.5%.

Caribbean Cement Company and Venezuela close to clinker deal

Jamaica: The Caribbean Cement Company and the Venezuelan government are close to a supply agreement for approximately 340,000t of clinker. The deal is valued at about US$29m, according to the Jamaican government. The clinker will be used by Venezuela as part of an initiative to build two million homes over a seven-year span to address a housing shortage.

Iran exports 18.8Mt in 2013 – 2014 calendar year

Iran: Iran exported 18.8Mt of cement clinker in the Iranian calendar year that ended on 20 March 2014 according to the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Trade. The figure was a 38% increase from the 13.7Mt exported in the 2012 – 2013 year. The ministry added that 69.7Mt of cement was produced in the country in the 2013 – 2014 period. Of this total 79% was consumed domestically.

Savannah Cement to invest US$200m in clinker production

Kenya: Savannah Cement plans to invest US$200m to develop a clinker plant. Currently, most of the major cement companies in Kenya rely on imported clinker.

Savannah Cement board chairman Benson Ndeta announced that the company, which currently has a production capacity of more than 1.5Mt/yr of cement, will develop the clinker plant to boost its market share. Ndeta said that the firm hopes to be a major competitor in the regional market in the supply of cement to Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan after satisfying its local market with cement.

Moroccan King launches Ivory Coast cement packing plant

Ivory Coast: King Mohammed VI of Morocco, with Ivorian Prime Minister Daniel Kablan Duncan, has launched a Euro12m cement packing plant in Abidjan. The plant has a bag production capacity of 80Mt/yr that can be extended to 160Mt/yr. The Africa-Cote d'Ivoire Cement company plant (CIMAF-Cote d'Ivoire), a subsidiary of Addoha Moroccan group, will supply bags for the group's cement projects in Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea Conakry, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Congo-Brazzaville, Niger and Mali.

As part of the delegation the Moroccan King and Duncan also visited a 0.5Mt/yr Addoha clinker plant in Abidjan. This unit has been operational since July 2013 and it imports clinker from the Addoha-subsidiary Ciment Atlas (CIMAT), which has two cement plants in Morocco.

Caribbean Cement sends clinker to Venezuela under Petrocaribe

Venezuela: Caribbean Cement Company, a subsidiary of the TCL Group, has entered into an agreement to supply 100,000t of clinker to Venezuela from December 2013 to April 2014. This arrangement was facilitated under the compensation mechanism of the Petrocaribe Agreement where the government of Jamaica could repay the loan to Venezuela with goods and services in lieu of cash.

This contract is the outcome of more than three years of negotiations between Caribbean Cement, the government of Jamaica and the government of Venezuela. What started as an initiative to export cement ended instead in an agreement to supply clinker.

Caribbean Cement will export 20,000t/month of clinker to Pertigalete, Venezuela. The company will continue negotiations to continue to supply clinker after April 2014. The company said in a statement "Caribbean Cement is pleased to be a trailblazer in setting a precedent for other goods and services to be negotiated under the compensation mechanism of the Petrocaribe."

Kenya: Increased clinker imports have been recorded at the Port of Mombasa, Kenya.

The surge in clinker imports is attributed to an unprecedented boom in the construction industry at the end of 2013 as a result of improved economic growth, rising disposable incomes and an expanding real estate industry.

Lafarge earns US$60m/yr from clinker sales in Bangladesh

11 December 2013

Bangladesh: Lafarge Surma Cement (LSC) earns up to US$60m/yr from sales of clinker to other cement companies in the country. The Bangladesh-based subsidiary of Lafarge imports limestone from a quarry in Meghalaya, India via a 17km belt conveyor to its cement plant at Chhatak, Bangladesh. According to the Financial Express, the setup is the only cross-border industrial venture between India and Bangladesh.
