Sino-Zimbabwe Cement Company and LiveTouch Invest plan US$30m grinding plant in Hwange
30 March 2020Zimbabwe: China-based Sino-Zimbabwe Cement Company and LiveTouch Invest, owner of Diamond Cement Zimbabwe, have acquired a six hectare site in the coal mining area of Hwange, Matabeleland North Province, and announced a planned investment of US$30m in the construction of a grinding plant which will grind clinker with waste materials from coal extraction to produce cement.
LiveTouch Invest had previously mooted the idea of a Zimbabwean clinker plant joint venture with South Africa-based PPC in July 2019.
Charah Solutions wins Entergy ash contract
27 February 2020US: Charah Solutions has secured a contract with energy supplier Entergy for provision of environmental services to three coal-fired power plants in Louisiana and Arkansas. The gives Charah Solutions the right to dispose of or market 0.9Mt/yr of coal combustion residuals (CCR), including to cement producers in the region for use as a cement additive.
Sagar Cements increases January production by 4.7% year-on-year
06 February 2020India: Sagar Cement’s consolidated production volumes at its integrated 2.4Mt/yr Mattampally, Telangana, and 1.0Mt/yr Tadipatri, Andhra Pradesh, plants in January 2020 were 317,000t, up by 4.7% year-on-year from 303,000t in January 2019. Accord Fintech News has reported that consolidated sales in the period fell by 1.6% year-on-year to 315,000t from 320,000t in January 2019.
On 29 January 2020 the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change granted environmental clearance to Sagar Cements for and upgrade to all three dry lines of its 2.4Mt/yr Mattampally plant to raise its capacity to 5.0Mt/yr. Its clinker capacity will rise from 2.0Mt/yr to 4.8Mt/yr. The expansion also includes a 36MW coal-fired power plant and a 22MW waste heat recovery (WHR) power plant.
Udaipur Cement Works plans 5.0Mt/yr integrated cement plant
03 February 2020India: Udaipur Cement Works has applied for environmental clearance to the government of Rajasthan for the construction of a 5.0Mt/yr integrated cement plant in the state. It plans for the plant to have an additional 2.0Mt/yr grinding capacity, a 30MW waste heat recovery (WHR) power plant and a 25MW coal-fired power plant. Project Today has reported a conjectured value for the project of US$224m.
Pioneer Cement commissions 3.7Mt/yr integrated cement plant
17 January 2020Pakistan: Pioneer has announced the completion of a new 3.7Mt/yr integrated cement plant with a 12MW waste heat recovery (WHR) power plant and 24MW coal-fired power plant. It said that production and dispatch would start ‘in due course.’ It commenced construction of the facility in 2017.
UltraTech Cement power plans cleared
13 January 2020India: The state government of Maharashtra has granted Aditya Birla Group subsidiary UltraTech Cement environmental clearance for a planned 16MW waste heat recovery (WHR) generator at its 3.6Mt/yr integrated Awarpur plant in Chandrapur district. Projects Today has reported that the state’s Environmental Impact Assessment Authority has also cleared the company’s plan to expand its Korpana coal-fired power plant in Chandrapur to 15MW from 10MW. The producer will place orders for construction contracts in February 2020.
Oman Cement Company issues tender for Duqm plant
03 January 2020Oman: Alsahawa Cement Company (ACC), the newly-founded Oman Cement Company (OCC) subsidiary, will operate the group’s upcoming Duqm cement plant, for which an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract tender has been issued. Bidding is due to close on 27 February 2020.
The new facility will include a coal-fired power plant and waste heat recovery (WHR) power plant. OCC Chief Executive Officer Salim Abdullah Al Hajiri described the commissioning of the 1.7Mt/yr integrated plant as a ‘reverse integration’ process, whereby the plant will initially grind clinker produced at other OCC cement plants beginning in September 2021 before upgrading to fully integrated cement production in March 2022.
Edenville Energy signs coal contract for cement end user in Rwanda
13 December 2019Rwanda/Tanzania: Edenville Energy says it has signed a new contract to supply 6000t/month of washed coal from its Rukwa Coal Project to an end user that is expected to be a cement producer based in Rwanda. The deal has been agreed with Tara Group, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tanzanian company, Kitanyoe Group Company, which currently supplies coal, gypsum, limestone and calcite to industrial users.
The contract is of note to the development of Edenville Energy because it has the potential to open up a new transport route for the company’s coal on Lake Tanganyika to both Rwanda and Burundi. However, the proposed supply arrangement is dependent on the company securing sufficient operating capital to fund production. Edenville Energy operates a coal mine in western Tanzania.
Nigeria: The Senate of Nigeria has urged the Federal Ministry of Transportation to complete the construction of the Ajaokuta - Otukpo railway line. The legislative chamber also advised the ministry to include a siding at Okaba to Ankpa as part of the project to make coal transportation easier, according to the Vanguard newspaper. Cement companies, including Dangote Cement’s Obajana plant and the Kogi State Super Cement Company at Allo-Itobe, would benefit from reduced coal prices. At present their coal is delivered by road. The railway project would also aid the Ajaokuta Steel Company.
Bedeschi opens new subsidiary in Russia
07 August 2019Russia: Italy’s Bedeschi has set up a new subsidiary in Moscow. The company is working on a project for OTEKO at its dry bulk terminal at the port of Taman on the Black Sea. It consists of the supply of a fully automated coal export terminal with a total aggregated capacity of more than 50,000t/hr on six loading lines. The supply includes bucket wheel stacker-reclaimers, several kilometres of conveyors and shiploaders. The system allows the blending of different types of coal. The new company in Russia joins existing subsidiaries in the US, Morocco, India and the UAE.
