Bangladesh: LafargeHolcim Bangladesh has replaced the belt of a 17km conveyor that transports limestone from a quarry in Meghalaya in India to its Surma cement plant in Bangladesh. The upgrade project was carried out in two phases with the latest finished in mid-April 2018, according to the Daily Star newspaper. The belt was replaced to reduce noise from the system. It was first built in 2004.
Standard Industrie celebrates 40th anniversary
02 March 2018France: Standard Industrie is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The company that facilitates the storage, flow, conveying and cleaning of bulk powdery products was originally setup in 1978. Founder Hervé Simoëns came up with the idea that compacted powder can only empty from the silo with a large influx of air. He filed a patent and offered his solution to cement manufacturers. Since 1985 the company has established subsidiaries in Europe but also in South Africa, China, Canada, the US and Mexico. Key products the company provides include the Airchoc and Macsys air cannons and the Liftube conveyor belt system.
Aumund to supply equipment for upgrade at LafargeHolcim’s Martres-Tolosane cement plant
23 January 2018France: Aumund has won an order to supply equipment for an upgrade at LafargeHolcim’s Martres-Tolosane cement plant. Aumund Fördertechnik is supplying a package including belt bucket elevators to feed the 96m tall heat exchanger and the raw meal silo at the plant. Two Aumund BWZ chain bucket elevators will be used to convey raw meal and filter dust, and for silo feed. An Aumund KZB pan conveyor with a vertical lift of 9m will be installed under the clinker cooler.
Seven Aumund Louise-type drag chain conveyors with short centre distances of 13 m and conveying capacities between 7 and 50t/hr will extract filter dust. Two Centrex machines (25 – 250t/hr) will be extracting a mixture of limestone and clay as well as iron ore from silos up to 7m high.
The Euro100m modernisation project at the Martres-Tolosane works is part of LafargeHolcim’s Euro300m investment project in France. Once upgraded, the plant will be equipped to burn alternative fuels, and energy consumption and CO2 emissions will be reduced. Work on the project will start in the final quarter of 2018 and be completed by mid-2020.
Uzbekistan: Aumund Fördertechnik has provided an update on an order for Almalyk Mining and Processing (AGMK) for a 1.5Mt/yr cement plant it is building in Sherabad. In May 2017 Aumund won the order for three drag chain conveyors with capacities from 7.5t/hr to 200t/hr for discharge of limestone, gypsum and pozzolan for the plant. In October 2017 an additional order was added for a Louise type drag chain conveyor for discharge of clinker dust.
Overall, Aumund is providing over 250t of machinery to AGMK. In 2018 the engineering company will supply to Uzbekistan at least 10 belt chain bucket elevators with capacities from 21t/hr to 500t/hr, and centre distances between 16.6m and 120m. The largest item in the delivery is a pan conveyor, with a centre distance of 148m and a clinker conveying capacity of 300t/hr. The clinker conveying system comprises two further Aumund pan conveyors with the same capacity but centre distances of 54m and 65m. There are also 19 silo discharge gates included in the package.
Sempertrans and Shaw Almex to end cooperation agreement in North American conveyor belt market
16 November 2017US/Austria: Sempertrans USA, part of Semperit Group, and Shaw Almex Industries have agreed to end a cooperation agreement for the North American conveyor belt market. The agreement was originally set up in 2016. Sempertrans USA has set up a sales and distribution organisation for conveyor belts in North America and it will use this to serve its customers. Tim Shaw, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Shaw Almex, said that both companies had agreed that it would be better if they acted independently so that they could be more ‘flexible’ in handling their respective customers.
Ireland: The Environmental Protection Authority is investigating Irish Cement’s plant in Limerick following an alleged ‘blowout’ of dust from the plant in early April 2017 that effected parts of Limerick city. The cement producer said that it had repaired a clinker conveyor following an inspection, according to the Irish Examiner newspaper. Previously Irish Cement admitted to dust emissions in 2015 that led to it compensating local residents with free car washes. The company is also appealing to the government to allow it to burn alternative fuels at the site despite local opposition.
Guatemala: Austria’s Doppelmayr has started up a RopeCon conveyor system for Cementos Progreso’s San Gabriel plant near Guatemala City. The 1.6km conveyor will transport 2100t/hr of limestone from a quarry to the plant across wooded terrain and it rises up to a height of 200m off the ground using four tower structures. The long rope structure of the system has enabled it to use a minimum amount of space on the ground. The new cement pant is expected to start operation in the first half of 2017.
Germany: Currax is promoting its Integrated Drive System for use by conveyor belt systems in the raw material sector. The complete drive train uses components made by Siemens that are then tailored for a conveyor’s particular requirements. Parts of the system include: the Simotics FD Motor, a conveyor belt drive with a power range of 200 – 1800kW; the Flender B3SH Gear units that are avaialble in various sizes; and the Rupex Bolt coupling, an additonal element for conveyor belt drives that are use as elastic compensating couplings and that provides a torque range of 200 – 130,000Nm. Currax is an enginering company based in Hamburg that provides and distributes products for the drive chain.
South Korea: Voith has reported on a contract to engineer and install a belt conveyor drive and controller system for SsangYong Cement’s Donghae plant. Changes made by the engineering firm to two belt conveyors from the main limestone quarry to the plant managed to double the production of the quarry.
The engineering company installed new drive trains on the longer 12.8km SB500 belt conveyor, one of the longest single conveyors in the world. The installed power is now 2 x 1.2MW at the head and 1 x 1.2MW at the tail of the conveyor. The existing drives from the longer conveyor were used to double the number of drive trains on the shorter 2km SB200 conveyor. The new configuration of the SB200 drive system consists of 4 x 600kW installed power at the head equipped with new gearboxes. A Voith TurboBelt DriveControl system was also installed to reduce the start-up time of the longer conveyor by half, from originally over 10 minutes. The system includes active-load sharing, belt conveyor control, slip detection and remote service capability. It is also expected to extend the belt lifetime by reducing the mechanical stress as well as the dynamic impacts.
“Due to this retrofit project, we were able to reduce the working hours of plant workers, achieved cost savings, and a flexible operation is now possible. Thanks to Voith’s technical support and efforts, the plant will enjoy sustainable operations providing value to its community, its owner, and the employees,” said Dukgi Lee, General Manager of the plant.
Yamama Cement orders two clinker conveyors from Aumund
17 January 2017Saudi Arabia: Yamama Saudi Cement has ordered two sets of clinker conveying equipment from Aumund. The Saudi Arabian cement producer plans to start-up two clinker production lines in 2018 at a new site to the southwest of Riyadh. The two lines, with a combined capacity of 20,000t/day, are being built by ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions.
The scope of supply includes 29 chain bucket elevators and 18 belt bucket elevators, in heavy-duty and lighter designs, for these two lines. For raw meal, Aumund belt bucket elevators will be used. Filter dust will be conveyed by Aumund chain bucket elevators optimally designed for low capacity. Two Aumund double chain bucket elevators with a capacity of 2300t/hr have been ordered per line as recirculating bucket elevators in the cement mill. The supply package for the two lines also includes six Aumund pan conveyors as well as various flat gates, silo discharge gates, telescopic chutes and cleaning conveyors.
