Vietnam: Vietcombank Securities Company (VCBS) has forecast a 16% year-on-year rise in Vietnam’s cement and clinker exports to 44.5Mt from 38.4Mt. 22.3Mt (50%) of the 2021 exports will be to China. Viet Nam News has reported that VCBS forecast a drop in Vietnam’s cement and clinker exports to China in 2022 due to a Chinese property market slowdown. From 2023, the Vietnam government plans to raise its clinker export tariff to 10% from 5%.
China produces 1.96Bnt of cement in first 10 months of 2021
30 November 2021China: China has increased its production of cement by 2.1% year-on-year to 1.97Bnt in the first 10 months of 2021. Xinhua’s China Economic Information Service has reported that the country exported US$19.6bn-worth of building materials over the period, up by 13%, while its domestic construction market grew by 11%.
Venezuela to export cement to Caribbean countries from 2022
15 November 2021Venezuela: Corporacion Socialista del Cemento plans to begin to export cement to countries in the Caribbean from the beginning of 2022. The El Universal newspaper has reported that the company’s plant is in the process of increasing its production of cement and clinker for the start of exports. In the first 10 months of 2021, it more than doubled its production and more than tripled its sales volumes.
President Pietro Acosta said "We are contributing to the growth of a new free, non-oil, diversified economy.” He added “We will still continue to serve the national market."
Lafarge Algeria exceeds 2Mt of cement exports
10 November 2021Algeria: Lafarge Algeria announced that it had exported a total of 2Mt of cement on 9 October 2021 from the start of its operations in 2016. Horizons News has reported that the company exported 0.8Mt of cement in the first nine months of 2021, more than double that in the corresponding period of 2020. It aims to exceed 2.5Mt of cement exports by the start of 2022. Its target for 2022 is full-year cement exports of 2.6Mt, double its 2021 target of 1.3Mt.
GICA Group exports expected to reach 2Mt in 2021
10 November 2021Algeria: Groupe des Ciments d'Algérie (GICA) expects that its cement exports should reach 2Mt by the end of 2021. The cement producer started exporting in 2018 with a total of 0.27Mt and has increased this since then. It renewed its desire for a new port to support its Chlef plant in the west of the country to further boost exports.
Fire at Siam Cement Group’s Kaeng Khoi plant to slow exports
03 November 2021Thailand: Siam Cement Group (SCG) says that a fire at its integrated Kaeng Khoi plant in Saraburi may affect exports on a temporary basis. The cement producer reported a fire at the site on 29 October 2021. The incident took place in part of a cable tunnel near to the control room at the plant. No injuries to staff were noted and the situation was stabilised quickly. The company said that the fire will not affect domestic cement sales as it has sufficient inventory.
Lanwa Sanstha Cement to commission 3Mt/yr Hambantota grinding plant in January 2022
01 November 2021Sri Lanka: Lanwa Sanstha Cement says that it will commission its Hambantota grinding plant in the Mirijjawila export processing zone of Hambantota International Port in January 2022. The company says that the plant will have a capacity of 3Mt/yr and cost US$80m. The Daily News newspaper has reported that the owner aims to help to counteract the domestic cement shortage.
Chair Nandana Lokuwithana said "One of the highlights of this first-of-its-kind facility in Sri Lanka will be the emphasis on new technology, with all mixing carried out using the latest European technology, while much of the other equipment used throughout the production process has been customised by world-renowned pioneers in innovation with environmental friendliness in mind." He added "Packaging is done using state-of-the-art technology for improved efficiency and minimal wastage."
Once commissioned, the Hambantona plant will produce ordinary Portland cement (OPC), Portland slag cement (PSC), Portland limestone cement (PLC) and blended hydraulic cement (BHC), according to Lanwa Sanstha Cement.
JK Cement completes Nimbahera cement plant upgrade
30 September 2021India: JK Cement has successfully completed an upgrade of Line 3 of its Nimbahera, Rajasthan, cement plant. The upgraded line has a 30% expanded capacity of 6500t/day, compared to 5000t/day previously.
The plant produces some cement for export to countries including Bahrain, the UAE, Nigeria, South Africa and Tanzania.
Fábrica Nacional de Cemento to increase clinker exports to Chile
23 September 2021Bolivia: Fábrica Nacional de Cemento (FANCESA) has received an order for 8000t of clinker from Chile. The Correo del Sur newspaper has reported that the company previously delivered 1000t of clinker to Chile-based Cbb’s grinding operations in the country. The producer says that it is in the process of securing a supply contract for 80,000t/yr of clinker with its Chilean customer.
Turkey: 120,000 members of the Construction Contractors Confederation (IMKON) downed tools on 9 September 2021 in protest against high cement prices. Emerging Market Watch News has reported that the strike will last until 21 September 2021 or until ‘satisfactory developments.’
The Ministry of Trade has tightened procedural restrictions on exporting clinker. Trade Minister Mehmet Mus is in talks with construction and cement industry representatives.
