Iran records booming eight-month exports
06 January 2020Iran: Cement producers in Iran reported growth of 22% year-on-year in exports of cement and clinker over the eight months between 21 March 2019 and 21 November 2019 to 11.4Mt from 9.34Mt. The Financial Tribune newspaper has reported that 37 countries received Iranian cement or clinker over the period. The leading importers of cement were Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Russia. Clinker markets included Iraq, the UAE and China.
Iranian province invests in Iraqi cement plant
27 November 2019Iraq: Iran’s Khuzestan province plans to invest in a US$35m cement plant project in Al-Emareh. Deputy Governor General for Coordinating Economic Affairs Nourollah Hassanzadeh said it was a joint initiative with Iraq, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). The project was launched in the mid-2010s and is reported to be in its ‘final’ stages. The Iranian province borders Iraq and it hopes to increase its international investment profile.
KAR contracts Arab Swiss Engineering Company at Erbil cement plant
16 September 2019Iraq: Arab Swiss Engineering Company (ASEC) will cover operation and maintenance of KAR Group’s 1.9Mt/yr integrated Qarachogh cement plant in Erbil. In a press release, ASEC stated that it has already overseen recruitment and planning and implementation of personnel development programs. ASEC's chairman and managing director Khaled El-Sebaie said he was ‘thrilled’ at the completion of the plant's hand-over.
Attock Cement commences operation of Iraqi grinding plant
03 September 2019Iraq: Pakistan’s Attock Cement has begun commercial operation of its Basra grinding plant. The 0.9Mt/yr unit was commissioned in April 2019.
US$60m reconstruction approved for Kufa cement plant
23 August 2019Iraq: The Ministry of Finance has approved construction work to restore the capacity of a cement plant in Kufa, Nafaj governorate, damaged in recent conflict. Thompson Reuters reported that work is set to commence pending the imminent release of the funds. Member of Parliament Fadhil Al-Fatlawi of the Labour and Social Care Committee has expressed the expectation that, at its full capacity of 0.18Mt/yr, the plant will accelerate the country’s restoration.
Lucky Cement fights growing costs with export sales
30 July 2019Pakistan: Lucky Cement has counteracted mounting costs with increased export sales. Its gross sales rose slightly to US$420m in its financial year to 30 June 2019. Its profit after tax fell by 14% year-on-year to US$65.2m from US$75.8m from the same period in 2018. Its cost of sales grew by 11% to US$190m from US$211m. Its cement sales volumes fell by 1.8% to 7.67Mt. However, its export sales increased by 60.9% to 1.82Mt.
The cement producer said that the first shipment of machinery from China’s Sinoma to its new 1.2Mt/yr integrated plant project at Samawah in Iraq. A power plant has also been ordered from Finland’s Wärtsilä. Commercial production at the site is planned for mid-2020.
Iraq: The government has approved a series of recommendations from the Ministerial Economic Council to support the growth of Iraq’s cement industry and to ensure that production capacity continues to meet domestic demand.
The cabinet approved a loan agreement between the Republic of Iraq and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development for an electricity services reconstruction and enhancement project. It also approved a recommendation from the housing consultative group that investors in housing projects need to complete a percentage of the planned building work before they are allowed to own the land.
Dal Machinery & Design wins kiln shell order from LafargeHolcim Algeria’s Oggaz cement plant
12 June 2019Algeria/Iraq: Dal Machinery & Design (DMD), part of Turkey’s Dal Engineering Group, has been awarded a contract to supply a kiln shell to LafargeHolcim Algeria’s Oggaz cement plant. The shell has an internal diameter of 5mm. The shell will be manufactured from a single part, with one single welding in the axial direction. It is expected to be delivered by September 2019. No value for the order has been disclosed.
Other recent orders for DMD include the supply of two kiln shells for LafargeHolcim’s Bazian cement plant at Sulaimani in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. The kiln shells were manufactured with a diameter of 5.2m. Delivery was made at the beginning of March 2019. DMD’s other kiln shell clients in Iraq included the Gasin cement plant in 2018. It also supplied a mill tunnion to LafargeHolcim’s Kerbala cement plant.
Iraq: Etihad Al Saqar has entered into a US$260m contract with China Machinery Engineering for a new cement plant. The unit will have a clinker production capacity of 6000t/day and will use a 52.2MW heavy fuel oil power plant, according to ET Net News. China Machinery Engineering, as the general contractor, will be responsible for the design, supply, civil engineering and construction, installation, training, commissioning, warranty and other works of the project. Construction is expected to last 30 months.
Iranian cement exports to Iraq suspended
07 May 2019Iran/Iraq: Hamid Hosseini, the secretary general of Iran-Iraq Joint Chamber of Commerce, says that exports of cement from Iran to Iraq and the Kurdistan region of Iraq have been suspended for the last year. Tariffs were added first before a ban, according to Tejarat News. At present exports of clinker are allowed.
