Kazakhstan cement production rises in first half of 2018
09 August 2018Kazakhstan: Local cement production rose by 11.5% year-on-year to 4.63Mt in the first half of 2018 from 4.16Mt in the same period in 2017, according to Kazakhstan Newsline. Previously, production rose by 1.5% in the first half of 2017 from 4.09Mt in the same period in 2016.
Panamanian cement production hit by strike
09 August 2018Panama: Production of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) has fallen due to a strike in the construction industry. OPC production fell by 15% year-on-year to 0.71Mt in the first five months of 2018 from 0.83Mt in the same period in 2017, according to the La Prensa newspaper. Production of other building materials, including concrete, have also been negatively affected.
Colombia: Data from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) shows that cement production declined by 1.2% year-on-year to 5.96Mt in the first half of 2018. However, production has improved since 2017 with the annual production from July 2017 to June 2018 being 12.2Mt, a decrease of 0.5% year-on-year, compared to a fall of 5.9% for the previous 12 months.
INC Vallemi cement plant paralysed by fuel shortage
31 July 2018Paraguay: Industria Nacional del Cemento’s (INC) Vallemi cement plant has been paralysed by a coke shortage. All operations at the unit’s clinker kiln have been suspended, according to the Ultima Hora newspaper. The producer is still making cement deliveries but its clinker stocks have fallen to below 30,000t. The company reportedly only has fuel oil left for one day and sufficient coke for one day of full operation. It is awaiting the arrival of a 6000t consignment of coke.
China: Anhui Conch says it has resumed production at three production lines at the cement plant run by its Tongling Conch subsidiary at Gusheng in Anhui province. In late July 2018, Tongling Conch received a written notification from the Tongling Environmental Protection Bureau requesting the ‘immediate’ resumption of operation of Tongling Conch’s waste incineration and ancillary systems for treatment of domestic waste of Tongling City. The suspension of production at the cement plant followed the temporary closure of a pier used by the plant in late May 2018 in accordance with new government regulations on drinking water supply and pollution.
Saudi Arabia: Production at Tabuk Cement and Hail Cement has risen supporting the construction of the Neom technology city project in the north of the country. Output from the producers has risen by 20% and 55% respectively year-on-year in the first half of 2018, according to Bloomberg. Both companies are located in the north of the country near to the project. Meanwhile, most of the other local cement companies have reported declining production. The Neom project has been backed with an investment of US$500bn.
Ukraine: Cement production fell by 3.5% year-on-year to 4.01Mt in the first half of 2018. In June 2018 production rose by 5.2% year-on-year to 1.03Mt, according to the Ukrainian News Agency. In 2017 the country’s cement production increased by 2.3% to 9.31Mt.
Cuba: The Nuevitas cement plant expects to produce 0.12Mt of cement in 2018. Nearly 80% of this output will be used to build houses, according to the Adelante newspaper. The plant serves the Camagüey province as well as Las Tunas, Granma and Ciego de Ávila.
Iran: Cement exports grew by 4.6% year-on-year to 3.6Mt in the first quarter of the local financial year to 21 June 2018. It exported cement to 27 countries to including Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, according to the Trend News Agency. The country produced 54.7Mt in the previous reporting year, a decline of 1.5% year-on-year. The local cement industry has faced problems, including a recession in the construction sector, poor gas supplies and obstacles to its export markets.
Peru: Cement production in Peru rose by 1.7% year-on-year to 4.8Mt in the first half of 2018 from 4.7Mt in the same period in 2016. Local despatches grew by 2% to 4.6Mt from 4.5Mt, according to data from Asociación de Productores de Cemento (Asocem). Clinker exports increased nearly six times to 0.6Mt from 0.1Mt.
