Pakistan: Thatta Cement’s has increased its cement dispatches in the first half of its financial year despite a general reduction in the local market. Its cement despatches grew by 12% year-on-year to 254,000t in the six months to 31 December 2024 from 226,000t in the same period in 2023. The company’s net sales rose by 23% year-on-year to US$13.9m in the six months to 31 December 2024 from US$11.3m in the same period in 2023. It attributed this to a “…substantial increase in the retention price.” Its profit after tax tripled to US$4m from US$1.3m.
The cement producer said that it installed a 5MW solar power plant during the reporting period. It also expects to complete a 4.8MW wind farm in early 2025. The company started operating a new pre-crushing system for its cement grinding mills, supplied by Sinoma-Liyang Heavy Machinery, in mid-January 2025.
Philippines: Aboitiz Upgrade Solar (AUSI), a joint venture between Aboitiz Power and Upgrade Energy Philippines, is building a ground-mounted solar facility at Republic Cement’s Norzagaray plant in Bulacan, according to The Philippine Star. Under the power purchase agreement, AUSI will fund and operate the project, while Republic Cement will exclusively purchase the generated power.
The facility is set to be completed in the second half of 2025, with capacity and project costs undisclosed.
Misr Beni Suef Cement to build solar power plant
15 January 2025Egypt: Misr Beni Suef Cement has signed a contract worth nearly US$6m with solar energy supplier IRSC, in cooperation with JINKO and HUAWEI, to establish a solar power plant at its site in Beni Suef Governorate.
The project aims to increase the company’s use of clean energy and reduce the environmental impact of its industrial operations. The capacity of the facility has not been disclosed.
Sagar Cements commissions 6MW solar power plant
07 January 2025India: Sagar Cements has announced the commencement of operations of its 6MW solar power plant, located at its cement plant in Gudipadu village, Ananthapur District, Andhra Pradesh. The plant is part of the company's broader strategy to integrate renewable energy into its operations, according to Business Upturn.
PPC Zimbabwe to speed up solar plants projects
01 January 2025Zimbabwe: PPC Zimbabwe says it is speeding up the construction of two solar power plants, with a combined capacity of 30MW, to enhance power supply to its cement plants. The company plans to start work on the solar units from the first quarter of 2025 with completion scheduled for the second half of 2026, according to the Herald Zimbabwe newspaper. Albert Sigei, Managing Director, said that the company was also continuing to work with the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) to improve the electricity supply.
Ambuja starts first 200MW of renewable power project
13 December 2024India: Ambuja Cements, an Adani Group company, has commissioned and started power transmission from its 200MW solar power project at Khavda, Gujarat. The remaining 806MW capacity from the country-wide project is at various stages of commissioning. 156 MW of wind power from Khavda and a further 300MW solar power plant in Rajasthan are expected to be commissioned in phases by March 2025. The remaining 350MW of solar power is expected to be commissioned by June 2025.
Ajay Kapur, Adani Group CEO - Cement Business, said the company is committed to achieve net zero emission by 2050, adding "We aim to power 60% of our total energy consumption from green power sources by the 2028 fiscal year.”
Pakistan: Attock Cement expects that its cement despatches will decline by 10% year-on-year in the 2025 financial year. During a corporate briefing it revealed that local despatches of cement had fallen by 20% year-on-year to 7.91Mt in the first quarter to 30 September 2024 from 9.87Mt in the same period in 2023, according to the Pakistan Press International news agency. The decrease was more pronounced in the south of the country than the north. Despite this, exports grew by 22% to 2.14Mt. The company’s turnover and profit also fell during the reporting period.
The company is currently investing US$4.5m in a 4.8MW wind power unit. The project is intended to reduce the company’s reliance on the local electricity grid and reduce power costs generally. It is expected to become operational from January 2025. The cement producer is also planning to increase its usage of alternative fuels to further bring down production costs.
Sinoma to build solar plant for Mass Group
22 November 2024Iraq: Sinoma International Engineering, China's largest provider of cement engineering services, has secured a US$351.5m engineering procurement contract to build a 1000MW solar power plant in Iraq for Mass Renewable Energy Production, part of the Mass Group which also operates a 6Mt/yr cement plant in Bazian, Iraq.
The turnkey contract, to be built in Al-Kut, will take 21 months to build, leading to completion by the third quarter of 2026.
Azerbaijan: Cemex has won the Net-Zero Industries Award for its clinker decarbonisation process using concentrated solar power. The award was presented at COP29 in Baku. Cemex’s solar clinker project is a collaboration with cleantech company Synhelion, which developed the high-temperature solar heat technology it uses. Cemex and Synhelion partnered in 2019 and achieved the first successful production of solar clinker in 2022.
Davide Zampini, vice president of Global R&D at Cemex, said "Together with Synhelion, we are pioneering solar-powered clinker production, a breakthrough process that can contribute to decarbonising cement manufacturing."
Al Jouf Cement signs agreement with ENGIE for solar plant
20 November 2024Saudi Arabia: Al Jouf Cement Company has signed a power purchase agreement with ENGIE to develop a 22MW solar photovoltaic plant at Al Jouf Cement’s facility in Turaif, Northern Borders Province. The plant will provide on-site power generation and help to decarbonise Al Jouf Cement's operations over the project’s 25-year lifespan. The solar photovoltaic installation will span over 420,000m2 and is expected to reduce the plant’s carbon footprint. ENGIE will handle the development, design, construction, ownership and operation of the solar plant.
