South Korea: The government ordered 2500 cement truck drivers to return to work on 29 November 2022. The Korea Herald newspaper has reported that drivers in the sector who continue their strike will be subject to criminal sanctions of up to three years in prison or a US$22,600 fine, and will have their truck driving licences suspended. The government explained that the order is justified due to cement truck drivers' failure to present 'good cause' for the industrial action.
President Yoon Suk-Yeol said "Taking the livelihoods of ordinary people and the national economy hostage to look out for their own needs is not justifiable."
Cement truck drivers make up 35% of a total 7080 truck drivers from 200 companies across the South Korean economy participating in the strike, which began on 24 November 2022.
South Korean cement production may shut down from 5 December amid truck driver strike
28 November 2022South Korea: Cement producers say that an on-going truck drivers' strike will force them to suspend production from 5 December 2022 if it continues for another week. Yonhap English News has reported that Industry Minister Lee Chang-Yang spoke to industry representatives on a visit to Asia Cement's Jecheon cement plant in Chunbuk. The cost of missed deliveries after four full days of the strike on 28 November 2022 was US$34.6m.
South Korean cement industry misses 200,000t of cement deliveries on first day of truck drivers' strike
25 November 2022South Korea: A nationwide truck drivers strike caused 200,000t of cement to remain undelivered from plants on its first day on 24 November 2022, according to the Korean Cement Association. Yonhap English News has reported that the disruption continued unchanged on 25 November 2022.
South Korean truck drivers launch second strike
24 November 2022South Korea: Truck drivers went on strike across South Korea on 24 November 2022. Reuters News has reported that the drivers demand that a government pay scheme be made permanent and extended to drivers in all sectors. A previous eight-day strike in June 2022 cost the South Korean cement industry US$79.8m. The Korean Cement Association said that most customers do not have cement in inventory beyond three days' supply, and will begin to run out from 27 November 2022.
TCRK announces carbon capture project with Asia Cement
16 November 2022South Korea: UK-based TCRK has announced a deal with Asia Cement to use its carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technology at the cement producer’s plant in Jaechon. The project will see the first commercial deployment of TCRK’s CCUS technology from the first quarter of 2023. It will initially target 30,000t/yr of CO2 equivalent and then ramp up to 120,000t/yr of CO2 equivalent by mid-2024. The second target is intended to help Asia Cement reduce its emissions by 20% required to meet its 2025 decarbonisation plan.
TCRK’s approach will use two processes to utilise capture CO2 from cement production. Its Arago Cement Process uses captured CO2, cement kiln dust and by-pass particles to produce precipitated calcium carbonate, which TCRK uses to produce a product called Arago Cement. The captured CO2 will also be used to grow microalgae in a process called bio-fixation. This method will offer 10% extra carbon storage capacity. The microalgae has a wide range of potential end-products including bioplastics and animal feed, and can also be used as a source of bio-cement production.
Jeon Gun-Sik appointed as president of Hanil Cement
26 October 2022South Korea: Hanil Cement has appointed its chief executive officer (CEO) and vice-president Jeon Gun-Sik as its president. He first joined the company in 1991, according to the Maeil Business Newspaper. He worked as the vice plant manager of the Danyang Plant, the head of the business planning department, the head of the business division and the executive vice-president of the head office of Hanil Hyundai Cement. Notably in 2017 he oversaw the acquisition of Hyundai Cement, a subsidiary now known as Hanil Hyundai Cement, that he also runs as CEO and president.
South Korea's nine-month Russian coal imports rise in 2022
25 October 2022South Korea: Russia exported 14.9Mt of cement in the first nine months of 2022, up by 31% year-on-year from 11.4Mt in the corresponding period of 2021. Tex Energy Report News has reported that this occurred due to sharp price rises in imported coal from Australia, Canada and Indonesia. Cement producers increased their reliance on these alternative sources of coal after the South Korean government placed sanctions on Russia in March 2022.
Meanwhile in India, Russian coal imports are expected to decline for a second consecutive month in October 2022, by 51% month-on-month to 730,000t. Russian media attributed this to stockpiling by cement market leader UltraTech Cement and others earlier in 2022.
South Korea: SK Ecoplant is at the centre of an initiative in partnership with the city administration of Seoul to co-process 52,000t/yr of incineration ash and 110,000t/yr of sewage sludge from the city in local cement production. AJU News has reported that the waste management company expects to supply the raw materials to make 150,000t/yr of cement production under the initiative.
Seoul generates 113,000t/yr of incineration ash and 200,000t/yr of sewage sludge. Currently, recycled incineration ash is used in concrete block and paving slab production, which have a limited strength when using the material.
Ssangyong Cement orders equipment from KHD for Donghae plant
31 August 2022South Korea: Ssangyong Cement has ordered equipment from Germany-based KHD Humboldt Wedag as part of an upgrade to clinker production line five of the Donghae plant. The scope of supply for the contract includes: a Pyroclon R type calciner with Pyrotop mixing chamber; a Pyrorotor type alternative fuel combustion reactor; a Pyrobox type coal firing system for process start-up and operation balancing; replacement of stage four cyclones with new high-efficiency cyclones for calciner connection and an overall pressure drop reduction; a new kiln inlet chamber with orifice, kiln hood and tertiary air ducts; and a new Pyrofloor PFC 738AW type cooler with a Pyrocrusher PRC 420-4ES.
This project will be the fourth Pyrorotor installation at the Donghae plant. KHD’s scope includes the engineering and supply of mechanical equipment for the clinker production as well as electrical equipment for the overall modernisation of the production process. The project scope is the same as the modernisation contract of line four of Donghae plant, which was signed in February 2021 and currently is in commissioning. The commissioning of the modernised line five is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2023.
Halla Cement awards upgrade project to KHD
30 August 2022South Korea: Halla Cement has awarded a supply and engineering contract to Germany-based KHD Humboldt Wedag for an upgrade of line 2 at Okke plant. KHD will supply a new Pyroclon R type calciner, with a Pyrotop type mixing chamber, and a 4.2m x 15m Pyrorotor type combustion reactor. Other equipment being provided includes: a Pyrobox type coal firing system for process start-up and operation balancing; replacement of stage five cyclones with new high-efficiency cyclones; and a new kiln inlet chamber with orifice. Erection and commissioning of the modernised production line is scheduled for the first quarter of 2024.
This latest project marks the second installation of a Pyrorotor at Halla Cement’s Okke plant. The installation of line 3 at the site is currently ongoing with commissioning scheduled for the first quarter of 2023. Overall, this will be KHD’s ninth installation of a Pyrorotor in South Korea.
The Pyrorotor has been promoted to cement plants as a way of using low-quality alternative fuels with minimal pre-processing. It offers a thermal substitution rate of over 85% and will also allow the Okke plant to reduce its NOx emissions. The installation of the new Pyroclon R type calciner and the high-efficiency cyclones in the lowest preheater stages will also provide the production line with an increase in efficiency due to an overall pressure drop reduction in the entire preheater.
