ACC fires kiln at new Ametha cement plant

India: Adani Group subsidiary ACC has started commercial clinker production from the kiln of its new Ametha cement plant in Madhya Pradesh’s Katni District. BQ Prime News has reported that the kiln line has a clinker capacity of 3.3Mt/yr. It is capable of co-processing up to 15% alternative fuel (AF). The plant is also equipped with a 1Mt/yr grinding unit and a 16.3MW waste heat recovery (WHR) plant.

The Ametha cement plant raises ACC’s installed cement and clinker capacity by 9.8% to 37Mt/yr.

Ambuja Cements to acquire Sanghi Industries stake and expand Sanghipuram plant

India: Ambuja Cements has concluded a deal to acquire a 57% stake in Sanghi Industries for US$202m. Reuters has reported that the company has offered to subsequently increase its stake in Sanghi Industries to as much as 83% for up to US$295m in total. It will fund the acquisition of any stake through internal accruals. Sanghi Industries operates the 6.1Mt/yr Sanghipuram cement plant, which is equipped with a 130MW captive power plant and a 13MW waste heat recovery (WHR) plant. The cement plant, in Gujarat, also has a single-jetty port on the Arabian Sea coast. Ambuja Cements' parent company Adani Group plans to more than double the Sanghipuram cement plant's capacity to 15Mt/yr.

Adani Group chair Gautam Adani said “By joining hands with Sanghi Industries, Ambuja is poised to expand its market presence, strengthen its product portfolio and reinforce its position as a leader in the construction materials sector. With this acquisition, Adani Group is well on course to achieve its target of 140Mt/yr of cement manufacturing capacity by 2028 ahead of time.”

IKN delivers pendulum cooler for Prism Cement's Prism plant

India: Prism Cement has taken delivery of a pendulum cooler supplied by Germany-based IKN at its Prism cement plant in Maharashtra. The new equipment will replace the 6.1Mt/yr plant's existing air beam technology cooler. The supplier says that this will help to improve the efficiency of waste heat recovery (WHR) processes at the plant.

Lafarge Emirates Cement hires Turboden for Fujairah cement plant waste heat recovery plant

UAE: Lafarge Emirates Cement, part of Holcim, has awarded a contract to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group subsidiary Turboden to supply and install a 10MW waste heat recovery (WHR) system at its Fujairah cement plant. The system relies on ENGIE Solutions' organic Rankine cycle technology. The supplier says that the installation will reduce the 3.2Mt/yr cement plant's energy-related CO2 emissions by 29,000t/yr (28%).

Turboden CEO Paolo Bertuzzi said "We are proud that Holcim Group, already our customer for three other WHR plants, has again chosen Turboden for this first project in the UAE. At COP 28, this year in the UAE, we will have the opportunity to present this energy-saving and CO2-reducing project to raise awareness in energy intensive industries."

Delay reported to construction of grinding unit at Shiva Cement’s Sundergarh plant

India: Shiva Cement says that a proposed 1Mt/yr grinding unit as part of its new Sundergarh plant is on hold while it evaluates the site location. The cement producer confirmed that the 1.36Mt/yr clinker unit at the site in Odisha has been commissioned as well as a 9MW waste heat recovery (WHR) unit. It added that it has already obtained clearance to operate (CTO) from the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) for 0.66Mt/yr of clinker production and 9MW WHR at the site. It is currently awaiting clearance for the remaining clinker production capacity. Work on alternative fuel systems, a 12km rail siding and a 10km overland belt conveyor at the site are reportedly progressing on schedule.

Bekabadcement to expand Bekabad cement plant

Uzbekistan: Bekabadcement is carrying out a 'large-scale' upgrade to its 0.7Mt/yr Bekabadcement plant in Tashkent Region. The producer said that the upgrade involves a 20% capacity expansion of the plant's production line to 2500t/day. Austria-based Unitherm CemCon supplied burners for the upgraded line, while China-based Beijing Triumph International Engineering supplied heat exchanger components and a KC 4.1-0955 cooler. The upgrade also involves the installation of new kiln lining, and will transition the plant's cement production from wet to dry process. Germany-based Christian Pfeiffer previously upgraded the Bekabad cement plant's grinding unit in April 2023.

General director Vasily Korobkin "We see that (parent company) United Cement Group (UCG) is interested in the modernisation and development of the enterprise. The group adheres to international standards, so all plans for the development of the plant are built accordingly." He concluded "We expect to become a modern and successful enterprise in Uzbekistan which is capable of becoming a major player in the cement industry of Central Asia.”

Suez Cement invests US$16m in alternative fuels upgrades since 2010

Egypt: Heidelberg Materials subsidiary Suez Cement has invested US$16m in upgrading its operations towards increased alternative fuel (AF) use since 2010. The producer uses AF in the burners and kilns of all three of its cement plants, at Helwan, Kattameya and Suez. Meanwhile, Suez Cement has invested US$60m in dust control measures over the same period. Other on-going investments include US$25m in the construction of a waste heat recovery (WHR) plant at the Helwan cement plant. The company is committed to reaching a 24% reduction in its CO2 emissions between 2019 and 2030.

Technical director Omar Khorshid said “We are committed to pursue initiatives to broaden our range of innovative and eco-friendly building solutions, advance operational efficiency through digitalisation and strengthen customer engagement for better business results and more positive impact."

Yoshinori Hyakutake appointed as chair of Turboden

Italy: Turboden has appointed Yoshinori Hyakutake as its chair. Hyakutake, Hiroshi Matsuda, the previous chair, and Yasuo Kamegawa have also been appointed as directors.

Hyakutake joined Nagasaki Shipyard and Machinery Works of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in 1993. For the majority of his carrier with MHI he has worked in the thermal power engineering section. He later worked as a project manager on several export projects for thermal power plants. From 2017 to 2020, he worked for Mitsubishi-Hitachi Power System. Since 2021, he has been the Senior Vice President of New Business Development at MHI.

Turboden is a subsidiary of Japan-based MHI. The company manufactures and maintains organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems, large heat pumps and gas expanders.

Lafarge Emirates Cement starts building waste heat recovery plant at Fujairah cement plant

UAE: Holcim subsidiary Lafarge Emirates Cement (LEC) has begun construction of a 10MW waste heat recovery (WHR) plant at its 3.2Mt/yr Fujairah cement plant. Supplier Engie Solutions says that it expects to commission the installation later in 2023. Trade Arabia News has reported that the equipment is based on a closed-loop organic Rankine cycle and will eliminate 29,000t/yr of CO2 - 28% of the Fujairah cement plant's energy-related CO2 emissions.

LEC general manager Olivier Milhaud said "Engie’s energy-as-a-service model means guaranteed energy savings and higher reliability and resilience, with no capital outlay and no need for additional staff." He continued "We are fully committed to the UAE’s sustainability goals, including the 2050 Net Zero vision."

CTP Team installing waste heat recovery system at Medcem Çimento

Türkiye: Italy-based CTP Team says it is currently installing a new waste heat recovery (WHR) system at Medcem Çimento’s Mersin plant. Its contribution to the construction of a new production line at the site includes installing an organic rankine cycle-based (ORC) 10.5Mwe WHR system and three new process fabric filters for the kiln and raw mill, coal mill and cement mills. The new line is expected to be commissioned in 2024.
