Adani family increases stake in Ambuja Cements
28 March 2024India: The Adani family has increased its stake in Ambuja Cements by 3.6% to 66.7% following an investment of just under US$800m. The move follows an investment of around US$600m that the board of the company approved in October 2022. The cement producer intends to use the additional finance to meet its target of reaching a cement production capacity of 140Mt/yr by 2028.
Ajay Kapur, the CEO of Ambuja Cements, said "This infusion of funds provides flexibility for fast-tracked growth, capital management initiatives and best-in-class balance sheet strength. It is not only the testament to steadfast belief in our vision and business model but also reinforces our commitment to delivering long-term sustainable value creation to our stakeholders and this shall propel us towards setting new benchmarks accelerating our growth and continue to deliver on operational excellence, business synergies and cost leadership."
Adani Group acquired Ambuja Cements and ACC from Switzerland-based Holcim in September 2022.
India: UltraTech Cement has increased its cement production capacity by 2.4Mt/yr through debottlenecking at integrated and grinding plants in Gujarat, Rajasthan and West Bengal. Following the improvement exercise its total domestic capacity is 141Mt/yr and worldwide it is 146Mt/yr. The improvements were made at the Pali integrated plant in Rajasthan and grinding plants at Magdall in Gujarat, Sonar Bangla in West Bengal and Neem ka Thana in Rajasthan.
UltraTech to buy a minority stake in O2 Renewable Energy
28 March 2024India: UltraTech Cement plans to acquire a 26% stake in O2 Renewable Energy for around US$2m. It is making the purchase to support the energy requirements of its plants from renewable sources, according to the Times of India newspaper. O2 Renewable Energy is currently building a solar power plant in Karnataka that is expected to generate 35 – 48MW.
India: KHD Humboldt Wedag has appointed Anurag Johari as Assistant Vice President. He has worked for KHD in India since 2005 in a variety of roles. Johari is a graduate in chemical engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Warangal in Telangana.
UltraTech commissions new capacity at Roorkee plant
25 March 2024India: UltraTech Cement has commissioned a new brownfield 1Mt capacity at its Roorkee-based facility in Uttarakhand, contributing to its total cement manufacturing capacity in India, which now stands at 138Mt. This addition is part of the 23Mt capacity expansion plan announced in June 2022.
In the third quarter of the 2024 financial year, UltraTech Cement reported a 67% increase in consolidated net profit to US$21.3m, with revenue from operations rising by 8% year-on-year to US$201m.
Shree Cement launches Bangur Concrete with new RMC plant
22 March 2024India: Shree Cement has launched Bangur Concrete, inaugurating its first Greenfield Ready Mix Concrete (RMC) plant in Hyderabad. The new plant has a production capacity of 90m3/hr.
Earlier in March, Shree Cement acquired five operational plants from StarCrete in Mumbai, raising its combined RMC capacity to 512m3/hr. This move marks a significant step in the company's diversification and growth in the concrete segment.
India: UltraTech Cement says that the Competition Commission of India has approved its proposed acquisition of Kesoram Industries’ cement business. The Business Standard newspaper reported that the demerger of the business from Kesoram Industries into UltraTech Cement is scheduled for November 2024. The deal has an enterprise value of US$914m.
ACC and Ambuja Cements' Geoclean launch new facilities
20 March 2024India: ACC and Ambuja Cements' Geoclean has launched two new facilities for sustainable waste management. The Ambuja Marwar pre-processing and co-processing facility in Rajasthan can convert 220,000t/yr of refuse into alternative fuel, while the ACC Jamul co-processing facility will process an additional 120,000t/yr.
The Ambuja Marwar facility, in collaboration with the Ambuja Marwar Farmer Producer Organisation, aims to source 50,000t/yr of agricultural waste from local farmers. This initiative will also increase the plant's thermal substitution rate to 15%. Similarly, the ACC Jamul facility will enhance its thermal substitution rate to 10%, reducing CO₂ emissions through the co-processing of waste in the cement kiln.

Ramco Cements inaugurates Gati Shakti cargo terminal
13 March 2024India: Ramco Cements has inaugurated the Gati Shakti cargo terminal at Jayanthipuram in Andhra Pradesh’s NTR District. The company will use the terminal for rail transport of raw materials over 8.3km from the Budawada limestone mines to its Jayanthipuram cement plant. The route will use electric trains.
The company said “Ramco Cements is glad to be a part of the Dedicated Freight Corridor under the Gati Shakti Mission.”
