Austria: RHI Magnesita is celebrating the tenth anniversary of first opening its Training Centre Cement in Leoben, Styria. The centre supports the regional cement industry with RHI Magnesita’s knowledge and experience of refractory bricks and mixes installation. It has held more than 50 instructive courses.

Centre leader Peter Steinkellner said “We are very pleased that more than 550 professionals from various countries have attended our trainings in the past 10 years.”

India: ACC has expanded its Green Building Centre chain into Telangana. The Orissa Diary newspaper has reported that the producer inaugurated the new Karimnagar Green Building Centre in the state on 14 December 2021. The centre will stock affordable alternative building products such as fly ash bricks and reduced-CO² concrete blocks. ACC aims to support Indian cities’ social, environmental and financial development through its Green Building Centres.

Managing director and chief executive officer Sridhar Balakrishnan said "At ACC, we strongly believe in embracing communities and working together to effect the real change. ACC's Green Building Centre business model benefits thousands of small scale construction workers by giving them employment and training."

Germany: Aumund has announced the launch of its PREMAS 360° packages. The three packages – basic, advanced, premium - combine quality Aumund all-around maintenance and inventory management support, extended warranties, physical inspections, cutting-edge Industry 4.0 monitoring of Aumund and other conveying equipment, technical training, emergency remote support and consultation programmes.

Managing Director Pietro de Michieli said “With PREMAS 360°, Aumund puts customer service to the forefront. Our goal is to reassure machine availability and reliability through the simplicity and flexibility of a fully bundled maintenance solution, to be a partner to our customers assisting them to reach operation excellence.”

US: Martin Engineering has launched new online conveyor training content. The supplier says that the content integrates with client customer learning management systems (LMS). It is intended to enable users to independently assign, monitor and certify progress of participants across all of a producer’s locations.

Training manager Jerad Heitzler said, “With this new effort in place, Martin has taken another step forward in global conveyor training.” He added “We’ve emerged as an LMS content provider to deliver greater flexibility and control over employee learning, helping customers attain the highest levels of efficiency and safety.”

Nigeria: The first set of female drivers has graduated from the Lafarge Driving Institute (LDI) in Calabar, Cross River state. Lafarge Africa said that this demonstrated its commitment to enabling inclusive workplaces for women, professional gender diversity, road safety through training and the creation of local jobs. The LDI admitted 53 female trainees in March 2021.

The institute was launched in late 2017 in partnership with Lafarge Africa, Automated Integrated Services and the Federal Road Safety Corps. It was set up to improve driver quality and to ensure that heavy goods vehicles (HGV) are manned by professionals who have passed through a training programme.

India: LafargeHolcim subsidiary ACC facilitated the construction of around 31,500 affordable homes across India through its Green Building Centres in 2020. The retail franchise offers reduced-CO₂ concrete blocks and other alternatives to traditional brick. The company uses the centres for its Mason Training Programme, which helps develop construction skills. Each Green Building Centre employs on average 30 people. Throughout the year, the company established 43 new centres, bringing its total number to 100.

Brazil: Votorantim Cimentos has announced plans to upgrade cement production at its 0.2Mt/yr integrated Corumbá cement plant in Mato Grosso do Sul. The Correio de Corumbá newspaper has reported the value of the planned work as US$2.85m. The investment is intended to improve the plant’s grinding line, modernise an electrical substation system, make changes to its mining operations and generally focus on optimising energy consumption. It also plans to train employees and work on community outreach activities.

Saudi Arabia: Saudi Readymix has received its certification from the American Concrete Institute (ACI) to provide ACI certified courses. The courses form a minimum qualification for concrete industry workers.

Saudi Readymix’s Commercial and Technical Director, Chris Leptokaridis said, “We are extremely proud of our research and development facility, it’s important role as a company knowledge hub and testing ground of all our future materials. It is the most advanced and well-equipped research facility of any readymix producer in the Middle East.”

The concrete producer will start accepting candidates for its courses in March 2021. It will offer ACI trainings courses in concrete field testing and concrete strength testing.

Russia: Eurocement subsidiary Belgorodsky Cement has dispatched the first batch of bagged cement from the new packing and palletising line at its 3.8Mt/yr integrated plant in Belgorod West, Belgorod Oblast. The 70t/hr-capacity line produces 50kg cement bags on pallets of 1.7t (34 bags).

Eurocement has also announced the first delivery of cement from its Belgorodsky Cement plant to Yaroslavl, Tolyatti and Nizhny Novgorod by river in 2020. Eurocement senior vice president Alexander Sapronov said, “The delivery of products by river transport is one of the most cost-effective methods of transportation. High-quality loading and reliable packaging guarantee consumers complete cargo safety.”

Eurocement has continued production throughout the coronavirus outbreak, but has restricted meetings, conferences and training sessions since 23 March 2020. The Group said, “Eurocement products are strategically important to the nation's economy. In order to ensure smooth operation of production facilities and of the group as a whole, measures have been taken to minimise the risk of spreading the coronavirus.” These include: ‘regular health check-ups and temperature measurements for employees and subcontractors, air disinfection, antiseptic treatment of operational surfaces, provision of skin antiseptics in toilets and informing employees about safety recommendations.’

Mexico: Cemex has announced that it is currently helping 45,000 young people across 11 countries to improve their employability through such initiatives as its New Employment Opportunities (NEO) initiative, which provides industry training to disadvantaged Caribbean and Latin American youths. The company says it aims to positively impact more than 65,000 youngsters by 2022 through its initiatives including awards programmes and volunteering schemes and its partnership with the Global Alliance for Youth (All4YOUth), through which it aims to promote skills.
