Pakistan: Lucky Cement commenced clinker production from a new 3.15Mt/yr kiln line at its Pezu integrated cement in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in late December 2022. This latest expansion increases the producer’s domestic production capacity by 26% to 15.3Mt/yr, from below 12.2Mt/yr earlier in 2022. The company also operates cement plants in Democratic Republic of Congo and Iraq with an additional capacity of 4.4Mt/yr.

The International News newspaper has reported that Lucky Cement anticipates domestic cement demand to grow due to the rebuilding of homes destroyed by flooding in 2022.

Madagascar: Cementis Océan Indien has launched a US$120m upgrade project to its integrated Ibity cement plant. The project is intended to increase the unit’s production capacity to 1Mt/yr from just under 0.2Mt/yr at present. A memorandum of understanding was signed by Cementis and the Ministry of Industrialisation, Commerce and Consumer Affairs in early December 2022. Completion of the project is scheduled for 2025.

Cementis agreed to buy Holcim’s businesses in Madagascar, Reunion, Comoros, Mauritius and Mayotte in late 2021.

UK: Heidelberg Materials subsidiary Hanson has awarded a contract to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries subsidiary MHI Engineering for installation of a planned 800,000t/yr carbon capture system at its Padeswood cement plant in Flintshire. The producer plans to store its captured CO₂ in exhausted Irish Sea natural gas fields. MHI Engineering will carry out a pre-front-end engineering design study using its Advanced KM CDR solvent-based process. The supplier developed the process jointly with fellow Japan-based company Kansai Electric Power.

The project will be MHI Engineering's third of its kind at a cement plant, following similar commissions with Lehigh Cement in Canada and Tokuyama Cement in Canada.

Vietnam: Thailand-based Siam City Cement has launched construction of Mill 2 of its 1.3Mt/yr Thi Vai grinding plant in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province. Việt Nam News has reported that the company plans to invest US$35m in the project.

The Thi Vai grinding plant cost US$53m when built in 2003.

Kenya: Savannah Cement has ordered a new US$300m production line from China-based Sinoma international Engineering for its Kitui plant. The project scope covers supplying an integrated clinker production line from limestone crushing to cement packaging and logistics. The line will have a clinker production capacity of 8000t/day. Commissioning of the new line is scheduled for about two years after the contract takes effect.

Australia: AdBri says that the cost of an ongoing upgrade at its Kwinana grinding plant has risen to US$177m - 200m following a review of the project. Initial findings reported that the project cost had been inflated by a range of factors, including the escalating cost of construction in Western Australia and constraints on available labour. The project was originally budgeted at around US$140m. The company has already invested US$64m in it.

The cement producer is now conducting a more thorough analysis of the project. It says it might be able to ‘optimise value’ through re-scoping, cutting costs and improving the synergies with AdBri’s existing operations and logistics network. It expects the review of the project to be complete by early 2023. The upgrade was previously scheduled for commissioning in mid-2023.

Ethiopia: Derba MIDROC Cement has signed a US$282m contract agreement with China-based Sinoma International Engineering to upgrade its integrated Derba cement plant in Oromia. The project is intended to double the plant’s cement production output to around 15,000t/day, according to Fana Broadcasting Corporate. Takele Uma, the Minister of Mines, attended the signing ceremony.

Taiwan: Japan-based Kataoka Corporation has successfully carried out an order for US$43.4m-worth of equipment for Taiwan Cement Corporation. Reuters News has reported that the order consists of cement plant machinery.

Kataoka Corporation is a developer and producer of laser processing systems and rechargeable battery inspection systems.

Scandinavia: Norway-based Aqualung Carbon Capture has secured a contract to supply a membrane-based carbon capture and storage (CCS) system for a Nordkalk lime plant in Scandinavia. The supplier said that each Aqualung Carbon Capture unit has the capture capacity to remove 25% of an average Nordkalk lime kiln's CO₂ emissions. The project will commence in early 2023.

Nordkalk plans to roll out Aqualung Carbon Capture CCS systems across all of its kilns before 2030. Accordingly, parent company SigmaRoc has newly committed to tightened group CO₂ reduction targets under the guidance of the Science-Based Target Initiative (SBTi).

SigmaRoc CEO Max Vermorken said “Our partnership with Aqualung is an exciting next step for the group and the fruit of many months of diligent work by Aqualung and our technical teams in the UK and at Nordkalk. It demonstrates that capturing all process emissions is possible, with existing technology and at industrial scale. Once we roll this out across the group, I believe we will be industry-leading when it comes to our carbon capture strategy, demonstrating again the agility of our business and our business model.”

Aqualung Carbon Capture president and chief technical officer Henrik Utvik said “Aqualung Carbon Capture is extremely pleased to partner with a pioneering company like SigmaRoc to apply our decarbonisation concept in lime production. Due to the size and energy advantages, we believe our technology is ideally suited for this application, and the collaboration with SigmaRoc will fast-track the deployment of full-scale carbon capture installations.”

Indonesia: Germany-based Beumer Group says that it has secured a contract with Semen Tonasa to supply its 40 - 50kg bag palletising system for the producer's Celukan Bawang cement plant in Bali. The system's multi-programme interface offers custom adjustment between all common packing patterns. Commissioning is scheduled for mid-late 2023.

Beumer Group said "Global influences such as delivery bottlenecks, shortages of raw materials and logistics problems continue to massively disrupt the supply chains. Nevertheless, the system provider will be able to send the machine to the customer in seven months. The target is to install and commission the machine in the third quarter of 2022."
