India: Star Cement plans to increase the cement production capacity of its Guwahiti integrated cement plant in Assam by 2Mt/yr. It also plans to increase its clinker production capacity in Meghalaya by 2Mt/yr. The Free Press Journal newspaper has reported the total cost of the planned investment is US$137m. Managing director Sajjan Bhajanka said that the company would complete the work by mid-2023.
Dalmia Cement’s Calcom plant received fly ash from Uttar Pradesh
15 October 2020India: Dalmia Cement has imported 3830t of fly ash from a National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) power plant in Uttar Pradesh for use at its 0.8Mt/yr-capacity integrated Calcom cement plant in Assam. United News of India has reported that the supplementary cementitious material (SCM) travelled over 1000km.
62.9GW-total capacity NTPC produces 65Mt/yr of fly ash, some of which is used by ACC at its cement plants in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab.
India: The Cement Corporation of India has started the sale of its non-operating Nayagaon plant in Madhya Pradesh. Prospective bidders are invited to submit an expression of interest by mid-April 2019, according to the Press Trust of India. The Nayagaon plant was originally shut in 1997 but its mining lease remains valid for two quarries until early 2024.
The state-owned cement producer operates plants at Rajban in Himachal Pradesh, Bokajan in Assam and Tandur in Telangana. It has closed down integrated plants at Mandhar in Chhattisgarh, Kurkunta in Karnataka, Akaltara in Chhattisgarh, Charkhi and Dadri in Haryana, Adilabad in Telangana and Nayagaon in Madhya Pradesh. It has also closed grinding plants at Delhi and Bhatinda in Punjab. The company is planning to sell its non-operating plants first before divesting the operational units.
Star Cement imports fly ash via Bangladesh
08 October 2018India: Star Cement has imported over 1200t of fly ash from NTPC Kahalgaon in Bihar. The ash was transported by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) via Bangladesh to Pandu Port in Assam, according to the Financial Express newspaper. The water route was chosen due to a lack of railway links in India's north-eastern states.
India: The Assam Real Estate and Infrastructure Developers' Association (AREIDA) says that the Competition Commission of India (CCI) has appointed an officer to investigate ‘unjustified’ rises in the price of cement. The AREIDA had filed a case with the CCI against Star, Topcem and Dalmia Cements in September 2016, according to the Assam Tribune newspaper. After a preliminary inquiry, the CCI had registered a case against the three companies with Case No. 77/2016, under Section 19 (1) (a) of the Competitions Act 2002, for violation of Sections 3 and 4 of the Act.
Cement producers asked to reduce prices in Assam
22 August 2016India: Cement producers have been asked to reduce their prices in Assam following an intervention by the state’s chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The official held meetings with 25 companies following reports of 10% local price rises in the last three months. Sonowal asked the producers why their prices had risen so fast and affirmed his administration’s commitment to stabilising the prices of commodities, according to the Times of India.
India: Barak Valley Cements intends to expand its cement plant at Karimaganj, Assam. Its cement grinding plant at the site will be upgraded 1000t/day from 750t/day. Other improvements will also be made to its clinker production line without increasing its overall capacity.
India: The Pollution Control Board of Assam has held a public hearing on a proposed 1Mt/yr cement plant at Jorabat, Mauza Sonapur in the state of Assam. Locals and Pollution Control Board officials were present during the hearing, where all the stakeholders put forward their opinions on the project. Most local people supported the project, provided that employment was prioritised to nearby villages and within the state, according to the Assam Tribune. Locals also emphasised the importance of the pollution control system of the plant.
KR Associates is planning to build the 500t/day clinker producing plant. It will have a cement grinding production capacity of 500t/day. A 26,850m2 plot of land has been acquired for the plant. The project will use 3600kW of power sourced from the Assam State Electricity Board. Once completed the plant is expected to employ 110 workers. Proposed air pollution control measures for the plant include bag filters and an electrostatic precipitator for the cooler exhaust stack.
