France: Germany-based ThyssenKrupp has won a contract for the installation of a new 4000t/day clinker line at Ciments Calcia’s Airvault cement plant in Poitou-Charentes. The supplier expects the new line to double the plant’s clinker capacity while also reducing its CO2 emissions. It is intended to replace the two existing lines at the site.

ThyssenKrupp will supply a 1200t/hr double-shaft hammer crusher, a longitudinal blending bed, a 370t/hr Quadropol QMR² 45/23 type vertical roller mill and a 10,000t tangential blending silo to process raw materials for the line. A single-string, five-stage Dopol type cyclone preheater with integral calciner will be supplied that is suitable to use with alternative fuels, with the possibility of conversion to oxyfuel in future. ThyssenKrupp plans to preassemble the preheater, reducing anticipated construction time ‘by several months.’ The plant also includes a Polytrack clinker cooler, a solid recovered fuel (SRF) preparation line and dedusting systems. Commissioning is scheduled for mid-2024.

No value for the project has been disclosed by Ciments Calcia or ThyssenKrupp. However, Ciments Calcia previously announced a proposed investment of Euro300m in January 2021.

Uzbekistan: China-based Anhui Conch has started building a 2.5Mt/yr cement plant in Akhangaran district in Tashkent. It will invest US$200m in the upcoming plant, of which it has already spent US$16.7m on imported equipment, according to the Podrobno news agency. The plant will occupy a 183ha site.

Nepal: China-based Hongshi Group has received clearance from the Nepal Rastra Bank to invest US$125m into Dang Cement. Hongshi Group owns an 85% stake in the cement producer, according to the Republica newspaper. The remaining 15% stake is owned by Shivam Cement. The investment will be used to build a 6000t/day production line at Dang Cement’s plant in Dang region. The project was previously approved by the Investment Board Nepal in late 2020 for commissioning in late 2023.

India: Sagar Cements says that its subsidiary Jajpur Cements is on track to commission its new 1.5Mt/yr Jajpur grinding plant in Odisha in December 2021. The Hindu BusinessLine newspaper has reported that the company invested US$41m in the plant’s construction. Sagar Cements acquired Jajpur Cements in May 2019 for US$16m. It had previously aimed to complete the new grinding plant’s construction by March 2021.

In October 2021, another Sagar Cements subsidiary, Satguru Cement, commissioned its new US$80.6m 1Mt/yr Indore integrated cement plant in Madhya Pradesh. The completion of both projects will bring Sagar Cements’ total installed capacity to 8.25Mt/yr. the company said that the new facilities will help in its rationalisation of freight expenses and help it to diversify its sales outside of existing markets.

India: Dalmia Cement plans for 100% of its cement to be low carbon by 2031. The company has a US$405m carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) investment plan to help it to realise its goal. It will also undertake carbon offsetting measures.

Business Line News has reported that the company plans to spend US$1.35bn to increase its installed cement capacity by 52% to 50Mt/yr from 33Mt/yr before the 2024 financial year.

Pakistan: Fauji Cement says that two planned cement plant projects will increase its total cement production capacity by 64% to 10.5Mt/yr by mid-2023, from 6.4Mt/yr at present. The producer plans to establish a 2.05Mt/yr cement plant at Dera Ghazi Khan. After its commissioning before mid-2023, the plant’s capacity will more than double to 5.65Mt/yr. Subsidiary Askari Cement is expanding its 2.8Mt/yr Nizampur cement plant’s capacity by 73% to 4.85Mt/yr. The group estimates that the total 4.1Mt/yr-worth of new capacity will increase its national cement market share to 13% from 6.7%. It says that this will make it the second largest cement company active in Northern Pakistan, after Bestway Cement.

Fauji Cement said that it is well positioned for growth. It generated 70% of the power consumed in its operations in 2020 itself.

Indonesia: Cement demand rose by 5.5% year-on-year nationally in the first nine months of 2021, according to the Indonesia Cement Association. The association recorded an increase in bagged cement demand of 6.9%, while bulk cement demand increased by 0.9%. Total cement demand grew in all regions except for Bali, East Nusa Tenggara and West Tenggara. Sulawesi recorded the highest demand growth with a rise of 10%, consisting of 80% bagged cement and 20% bulk cement demand growth.

In 2020, domestic cement demand was 62.7Mt. Indonesia has an installed cement capacity of 115.3Mt/yr.

India: Dalmia Bharat’s consolidated cement sales in the first half of the 2022 financial year were 5.1Mt, up by 6.2% year-on-year from 4.8Mt in the first half of the 2021 financial year. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) grew by 1.6% to US$178m from US$176m. The company recorded a net profit of US$67.1m during the period, up by 19% from US$56.3m. During the second quarter of the year, which ended on 30 September 2021, Dalmia Bharat commissioned a second line at its Cuttack, Odisha, cement plant and began trial production at its newly acquired Murli cement plant in Maharashtra.

The Orissa Diary newspaper has reported that managing director Puneet Dalmia said "We are pleased with our performance during the quarter. In spite of unprecedented costs related headwinds across all regions, our razor sharp focus on operational efficiencies and execution has helped us contain our costs and deliver an industry-leading performance. We have made considerable progress on our immediate priorities, including expanding our capacity, driving organisational transformation, reinforcing our brand and redefining our corporate governance framework. Looking ahead, we remain focused on further strengthening our momentum to drive sustainable and profitable growth and generate top-tier returns for our stakeholders.” He continued “As India's economy continues to rebound from the lows of last year, we expect the demand and pricing environment for the sector to improve for the rest of the 2022 financial year."

Kenya: Cement companies are in the process of expanding their total clinker production capacity by 70% to 10.7Mt/yr by 2023 from 6.3Mt/yr. The Business Daily newspaper has reported that six producers – Bamburi Cement, East African Portland Cement Company (EAPCC), Karsan Ramji & Sons, National Cement, Rai Cement and Savannah Cement – will add a total of 4.4Mt/yr to their clinker capacities.

Global Cement News previously reported that Kenya faced a 3.3Mt/yr national clinker shortage on 13 October 2021. Domestic producers are in the process of lobbying the government to raise the duty on imports of clinker to 25% from 10%.

Spain: Corporación Noroeste has completed its acquisition of Cementos Balboa. The companies agreed to the deal in June 2021. Agencia EFE News has reported that the acquisition brings parent company Votorantim Cimentos’ installed cement capacity to 57.4Mt/yr globally.
