Md Shahidullah, the managing director of Metorcem Cement and chairman of Metrocem Group, and Zahir Uddin Ahmed, managing director of Confidence Cement, have also been re-elected as the first and second vice-president of the association respectively. Bangladesh: MI Cement, also known as Crown Cement, has revived plans worth US$90m to add a sixth production line at its cement grinding plant in Munshiganj. The upgrade will bring the unit’s production capacity to 19,280t/day from 11,000t/day. The initiative was originally announced in early 2019.
Bangladesh: The local cement industry has a cement production utilisation rate of 54%. Cement consumption was 27.1Mt in 2017, according to the Daily Star newspaper. However, the country had a production capacity of 50.2Mt/yr in 2017 from around 45 companies of various sizes. Production capacity is expected to grow to 80Mt/yr by 2019.
Masud Khan, the chief executive officer of Crown Cement Group, forecasts that cement consumption will grow by 8 – 10% by 2022. He blamed the local oversupply on an overpopulated market. Other issues the local industry faces include a recent rise in the price of raw materials, port congestion which causes delay in unloading raw materials, a lack of smaller ships, local currency depreciation, low retail price and low load limits on local roads.
Bangladesh: Two workers have been killed at the cement grinding plant at Paschim Muktarpur in Munshiganj operated by Crown Cement. The workers died after being struck by falling material when entering a room at the site to clean it, according to the New Nation newspaper. Another worker was critically injured in the incident.
Masud Khan appointed chief executive officer of Crown Cement
08 November 2017Bangladesh: Masud Khan has been appointed as the chief executive officer (CEO) of Crown Cement Group. Previously he was an adviser to the CEO of LafargeHolcim Bangladesh and also worked as its chief financial officer, according to the Daily Star newspaper. He has also served as an independent director of GlaxoSmithKline Bangladesh, Marico Bangladesh and Berger Paints Bangladesh. Khan graduated from St Xavier's College in Kolkata, India. He is also a member of the guest faculty at the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh.
MI Cement to add new unit soon
16 March 2015Bangladesh: MI Cement Factory Ltd plans to install new production unit soon to cater the growing demand for cement in the country.
"We have decided to set up another packing unit and a 1500t capacity cement silo to enhance the delivery capacity of our cement (Crown Cement)," said Mohammed Jahangir Alam, chairman of MI Cement. "This will also help maintain the quality of our cement and thus keep the pace of increasing revenue."
Bangladesh is preparing for development in public infrastructure, communication and housing facilities, said Alam. "The cement industry in Bangladesh is headed for a revolution," he said. High population densities in cities, unplanned urbanisation and rapid economic development are likely to expand cities vertically rather than horizontally to achieve maximum utilisation of available space and ensure future food security by not urbanising fertile land, he added.
Quoting a recent study, Alam said that the per capita cement consumption in Bangladesh was still low at 107kg, compared to 210kg in India, 265kg in Pakistan, 310kg in Sri Lanka and 570kg in Korea, indicating future growth of Bangladeshi cement consumption.
At present, MI Cement's total production capacity is 1.74Mt/yr. Alam said that in the fiscal year 2013 - 2014, the political unrest hampered MI Cement's day-to-day business activities and reduced its cement delivery to lower than expected. However, the company increased its revenue by 17% year-on-year to US$102m despite the political unrest. MI Cement sold US$86m of goods in the 2014 fiscal year, up from US$73.2m in 2013 in the previous fiscal year.
