Algeria’s 11-month cement exports climb by 240% year-on-year
13 January 2020Algeria: Algeria sold cement and clinker worth US$59.3m in the first 11 months of 2019 – up by from US$17.5m in the corresponding period ending 30 November 2018. The country’s 40Mt/yr-capacity cement industry serves a domestic demand of 22Mt/yr. Algeria Press Service has reported that Algeria’s key trade partners for exported cement were sub-Saharan African nations, according to former Minister for Trade Saïd Djellab.
Nigeria: Aliko Dangote, the chairman of Dangote Cement, plans to increase his company’s cement production capacity in Africa by 29% to 62Mt/yr. It aims to add 6Mt/yr in Nigeria in 2020 to support exports to grinding plants in Cameroon and West Africa, according to Bloomberg. The cement producer previously said it had a production capacity of 45.6Mt/yr in 2018 from operations in 10 countries.
LafargeHolcim inaugurates new cement depot for Abidjan plant
30 August 2019Ivory Coast: LafargeHolcim has constructed a depot in Bouaké, the second city of Ivory Coast, for storage of cement produced at its facility in the capital of Abidjan.
In a press release sent to the Agence Ivoirienne de Presse, LafargeHolcim explained that the aim of the development is to bring consumers and its supply closer together. It hopes thereby to maximise the national presence of it 2Mt/yr cement plant.
LafargeHolcim Ivory Coast launches online sales
24 June 2019Ivory Coast: LafargeHolcim Ivory Coast has launched online sales of its products on the Jumia e-commerce platform. The online store is aimed at individual and small business customers, according to the Agence Ivoirienne de Presse. The project is starting in a pilot phase in Abidjan and Bingerville. Deliveries of orders made online are coordinated with the company’s Binastore network around the country.
Liberia: President George Manneh Weah has written to the Liberian Senate to agree investment and incentive agreements between the government and Starr Cement. The cement producer intends to build a 0.6Mt/yr grinding plant, according to the New Dawn newspaper. The project will cost US$41m. The proposed plant will supply cement locally and to other countries in the Mano River Union, including Ivory Coast, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
Algeria exports over 0.5Mt to Europe
24 April 2019Algeria: The Algerian cement industry has exported over 0.5Mt of clinker to Europe as part of a shift to international markets. Samir Setiti, the president of Groupe des Ciments d’Algérie’s (GICA) Sodismac subsidiary, said that the company was currently transporting 15,000t of clinker from its Beni Safi plant to the Ivory Coast from the Port of Ghazaouet, according to the L’Expression newspaper. This is part of 15 export operations the cement producer has conducted since May 2018.
Dangote Cement building 3Mt/yr plant in Ivory Coast
09 April 2019Ivory Coast: Dangote Cement is building a 3Mt/yr cement plant with two production lines from an investment of around US$260m in the Ivory Coast. In an audience with Souleymane Diarrassouba, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Promotion of SMEs, the company said that the project is 70% complete, according to the Agence Ivoirienne de Presse. The new plant will create 800 jobs. It is scheduled to start production in early 2020.
Algeria: GICA Group’s Hadjar Soud cement plant has made its first 37,000t clinker shipment to the Ivory Coast via the Port of Annaba. It is part of a 0.2Mt/yr consignment planned for 2019 from the unit, according to the Algeria Press Service. Overall, GICA intends to export 1.5Mt of clinker to African countries in 2019.
Prestige Cement inaugurates grinding plant in Abidjan
29 March 2019Ivory Coast: Prestige Cement has inaugurated a 1.2Mt/yr plant at Abidjan. The Chinese-Ivorian joint venture had an investment of around US$35m, according to the Agence de Presse Africaine. The unit has two 0.6Mt/yr production lines using vertical roller mills. Souleymane Diarrassouba, Minister of Commerce, Industry and SME Promotion, attended the event on behalf of the government. Chinese ambassador Tang Weibin was also in attendence.
Ivory Coast imported 3.1Mt of clinker in 2018
15 March 2019Ivory Coast: Imports of clinker rose by 2.3% year-on-year to 3.10Mt in 2018 from 3.03Mt in 2017. The value of the product increased by 9.7% to US$162m from US$148m, according to Connection Ivoirienne. Clinker surpassed crude oil as the most imported commodity by volume into the country in 2017.
